“An aimless pursuit of novelty parading as the realization of freedom”

Benedict tells educators schools must affirm Catholic identity

Pope Benedict XVI, in an address yesterday evening at Catholic University of America, emphasized that Catholic education should lead to an encounter with Jesus, who teaches us the truth. Any failure to do so leads Catholic institutions to fall short of their Catholic identity, he said.

“I warmly greet each of you -- bearers of wisdom -- and through you the staff, students and families of the many and varied institutions of learning that you represent,” the Holy Father began.
Benedict XVI then launched into his address by quoting from his encyclical Spe Salvi, saying, “First and foremost every Catholic educational institution is a place to encounter the living God who in Jesus Christ reveals his transforming love and truth.”

This encounter with Christ sustains people through “personal struggles, moral confusion and fragmentation of knowledge,” he said. According to the pope, “scholarship and education, founded on the unity of truth and in service of the person and the community, become an especially powerful instrument of hope.”

After pointing to the historic service of the Catholic Church to the less privileged in the US, the Holy Father posed the question: How do Church institutions “contribute to the good of society through the Church's primary mission of evangelization?”

“A university or school's Catholic identity is not simply a question of the number of Catholic students. It is a question of conviction -- do we really believe that only in the mystery of the Word made flesh does the mystery of man truly become clear? Are we ready to commit our entire self -- intellect and will, mind and heart -- to God? Do we accept the truth Christ reveals? Is the faith tangible in our universities and schools? Is it given fervent expression liturgically, sacramentally, through prayer, acts of charity, a concern for justice, and respect for God's creation? Only in this way do we really bear witness to the meaning of who we are and what we uphold.”
Reflecting on the modern doubt about whether truth actually exists, the pope said that “the contemporary ‘crisis of truth’ is rooted in a ‘crisis of faith’.” Academic freedom is not true freedom if it becomes disconnected from the truth. Academic freedom, and indeed, freedom in general is often thought of as an “opting out,” the pope said. However, freedom should be thought of as an “opting in -- a participation in Being itself. Hence authentic freedom can never be attained by turning away from God.”

The particular responsibility, for every Catholic educator, “is to evoke among the young the desire for the act of faith, encouraging them to commit themselves to the ecclesial life that follows from this belief,” the pope said.

“Clearly, then, Catholic identity is not dependent upon statistics. Neither can it be equated simply with orthodoxy of course content. It demands and inspires much more: namely that each and every aspect of your learning communities reverberates within the ecclesial life of faith,” the pope said.

The pope said that the Church serves society by reminding society that it is not how people live that creates truth but rather that truth should serve as the basis of how we live. “In the educational forum, the diakonia (service) of truth takes on a heightened significance in societies where secularist ideology drives a wedge between truth and faith,” he said. This type of society dismisses any argument that is metaphysical, that is to say, not based on material evidence.

This “relativistic horizon” leads to a situation where “the goals of education are inevitably curtailed.” Without any reference to transcendent truth, a slow “lowering of standards occurs,” the pope explained. “We observe today a timidity in the face of the category of the good and an aimless pursuit of novelty parading as the realization of freedom. We witness an assumption that every experience is of equal worth and a reluctance to admit imperfection and mistakes. And particularly disturbing, is the reduction of the precious and delicate area of education in sexuality to management of 'risk', bereft of any reference to the beauty of conjugal love.”

Faced with this situation, the pontiff posed the question: “How might Christian educators respond? These harmful developments point to the particular urgency of what we might call ‘intellectual charity.’ Being intellectually charitable means guiding “the young towards the deep satisfaction of exercising freedom in relation to truth, and it strives to articulate the relationship between faith and all aspects of family and civic life. Once their passion for the fullness and unity of truth has been awakened, young people will surely relish the discovery that the question of what they can know opens up the vast adventure of what they ought to do,” he said.

The Holy Father also spoke about the debate over religious freedom that has been raging over the last few decades. Academic freedom calls on educators “to search for the truth wherever careful analysis of evidence leads you,” he explained. Nevertheless, “any appeal to the principle of academic freedom in order to justify positions that contradict the faith and the teaching of the Church would obstruct or even betray the university's identity and mission; a mission at the heart of the Church's munus docendi and not somehow autonomous or independent of it.”

Catholic institutions must fulfill their duty and privilege of ensuring that students receive instruction in Catholic doctrine and practice, Benedict emphasized. “This requires that public witness to the way of Christ… both inside and outside the classroom. Divergence from this vision weakens Catholic identity and, far from advancing freedom, inevitably leads to confusion, whether moral, intellectual or spiritual.”

I am not a Catholic nor even a believer, yet this octogenarian speaks more sense to me than the vast majority of politically correct nonsense emanating from the halls of academia and the media. Good on you, Benedict!

Good he needs to address that regarding yesterday's so called Mass, sheer disaster and utter shock at this display of garbage pimped to us as a Roman Catholic Mass, and now you know why the S.S.P.X. S.S.P.V. and others have a legitimate gripe, the USCCB know what type of music the Holy Father likes at Mass and this was done expressly to shame him the bishops don't like him as Pope and did not like him as Cardinal Ratzinger. Even Raymond Arroyo and Father John Neuhaus were in shock at EWTN while this music mess was going on, check out Raymonds blog!!

Our Holy Father's speech at Catholic University of America was excellent!! However, in practical terms, one cannot expect to run a worldwide Church on simply goodwill, and the hope that all will act responsibly to Christ!! We should have no need to speak of a "Catholic identity." Instead, the Vatican must have very definite rules and procedures for all to follow, and procedures to expel wrongdoers, as in the past. Catholicism must be, as in the past-- a very definite religion with a very definite way of life, with serious religious responsibilities and obligations, for all, and serious consequences, for wrongdoers!! Catholic education, from grade school through post-graduate education-- is a very serious responsibility!! Preparing future priests in our seminaries is likewise, a huge responsibility!! The Vatican must take these matters very, very seriously!! With a truly sincere faith, and total commitment to Jesus Christ-- it is imperative to sacrifice all babyish, so-called "freedoms," to serve only Christ, Who shall lead us to true freedom, in Heaven!! The highest goal of all Catholic education, is a training to prepare for Eternal Life with God, in Heaven!!

I await with interest to see the response by the California academia, the Jesuits in particular. Perhaps it will be a deafening silence?

I hope Father Privett from University of San Francisco and Father Jenkins from the University of Notre Dame were 'front and center' though it will take a miracle for them to really listen and conform!!!! I'd like to see AB Burke and AB Chaput in charge of checking up on the so called 'Catholic' Universities and for that matter high schools.......... Otherwise, without being checked on.........it will be 'business as usual'.

"God only allows evil to bring about a greater good". Perhaps this debacle of a Mass will make the Holy Father even more aware of the disaster that the USCCB is! Talk is cheap, it is in the enforcement or lask of same that he will be judged. Let us all keep him in our prayers! God bless, yours in Their Hearts, Kenneth M. It is clearly within the power of every ordinary (local bishop) to remove the title Catholic from any school in his diocese. It is very simple: He says that either you get Catholic now or I declare you a non Catholic college. The college knows that if that happens the alumni stop giving and the students stop coming. That means the school might go out of business. So if if the local bishops do nothing now, which I expect, then we will know that this speech is pious blather. Talk Talk Talk and no action. It's a sham to pacify traditional Catholics. The means are there to fix it in a heartbeat.... but is the will there????

Does this mean that the Vatican will tell USF that they may not call that institution a "Catholic"university? Or that, to call themselves such, Notre Dame MUST fire McBrien? I doubt that the Vatican will do any such things, however desirable they might be. Pity!

I was told by my daughter 15 yr's ago that she sent her children to a Catholic School, because they DID"NOT teach Catholic, they taught "christian". It's been going on a long time and some of the teachers were aware of it,they tried to get the Church's teaching in, but the priest was very progressive and so encouraged the" christian" teaching.

"(The pope) emphasized that Catholic education should lead to an encounter with Jesus, who teaches us the truth. Any failure to do so leads Catholic institutions to fall short of their Catholic identity, he said. " Most Catholic institutions of higher learning are way past falling short of their Catholic identity. They have lost it altogether. Speaking of "Catholic identity," I understand from reports that the papal Mass in Washington fell somewhat short of "Catholic identity," as well.

I agree totally with the Holy Father on useless and aimless novelties. This is why he should abolish the failed novelty of "vernacular only" liturgies which are mostly noisy, nervous affairs where irreverence and illicit liturgical behaviours are carried out such as applause, dancing, laypeople touching the scared vessels, extraordinary ministers are overused regularly, priests who do not believe in transubstantiation create invalid masses by saying mass with the wrong intention, priests and servers dress up in clown outfits and so on. Yes, Pope Benedict XVI, I agree, let us abolish all of these destructive novelities now.

Ratziner's visit was a shameless display of how people can be seduced by pomp, flashy vestments and spectacle; and all backed up by full orchestra and chorus. It was crowd hysteria and nothing more. Also shameful was the use of Clergy Abuse Victims. Ratzinger scolded the bishops for their handling of the Abuse Scandal, when he, Ratzinger, was in charge of all the files, docmentation and invetigations of the sexual butchery of Roman Catholic Children, including myself and my Brothers and Sisters in suffering....All 11,000 Plus of Them. The church once again used these poor people for their own purposes. It was Roger Mahony who suggested that Ratzinger meet with Victims and yet, Mahony refuses to meet with the Victims of Father Oliver O'Grady; the priest who sexually victimized so many children in the area of Stockton, CA when Mahony was Bishop of Stockton. And if anyone knows how to use suffering people to his best advantage, it's Mahony!!

Victoria: You are mistaken. Cardinal Ratzinger was not in charge when the abuse happened. Neither was he in charge of the investigation. I don't know where you get your information. I also doubt Mahony had any influence with the Holy Father's schedule. He's actually out of favor with Rome in general and the events were not even within his archdiocese. I agree that Mahony should be held accountable for the mishandling but you need to get your facts straight before you start attacking blindly.

Fr. MP, you have made numerous comments about Jesuit institutions failing to provide "proper education". I'm curious to know how exactly you see them failing. I'm also curious to know what Order are you, and why you feel so secure in grade school level sniping. Is this kind of thing really productive?

Posted Tuesday, April 22, 2008 12:11 PM By Victoria
No, Dai, You are the one who is out of touch, by commenting on things about which you know nothing. Ratz was the Prefect for the Congregation of the Doctrine of Faith; and was, therefore, in charge of the research and data concerning those responsible for the sexual butchery of the children of our church. I KNOW that the file of the perpetrator priest who defiled myself, and over 200 other little Roman Catholic Girls, went across Ratzinger's desk. If you watched the recent coverage of this visit on the major networks, as well as on EWTN, you would know what his duties were. Also, if you had seen the interview with Roger Mahony, you would know that it was HE,(Mahony) who took credit for the meeting with victims. Besides, how do you know Mahony is out of favor? 'You have a pipeline to the pope?????? In order for you to get up to speed, may I suggest you study the Dallas Charter and the John Jay Report.

JohnnyV13, if you know your Catholic faith, and compare that to the publicly stated positions of many particular Jesuits, and the statements that come from Jesuit run institutions (like those posted on this site), you will know that many Jesuits do not teach the true Catholic faith. Pointing out this inconsistency is not sniping but awareness; there are many wolves in sheep's clothing. A shepherd looks after his sheep. At a Wanderer magazine conference some years ago a Jesuit himself said that it's hard to be Jesuit and Catholic at the same time. There are some high-profile good ones, such as Fr. Mitch Pacwa, Fr. Kenneth Baker, Fr. Robert Spitzer. (These priests are at the top of my head)
