“Mother of Life Conference”

Major pro-life personalities slated to speak at San Diego event in August

News from the Trenches

The San Diego chapter of the Knights of Columbus is sponsoring the “Mother of Life Conference” at San Diego State University’s Viejas Arena on Saturday, Aug. 14. The event will feature notable luminaries of the pro-life movement, as well as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and his wife, Callista.

The event is scheduled to run from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and is billed by the Knights as "the Largest Pro-Life Conference in Southern California," with the goal of “supporting Life from Conception to Natural Death.”

Scheduled speakers include Fr. Mitch Pacwa, S.J., a well-known biblical scholar best known for his appearances on EWTN; Fr. Thomas J. Euteneuer, president of Human Life International, the world's largest pro-life organization with affiliate offices and associates in 80 countries; Fr. Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life and Missionaries of the Gospel of Life, president of the National Pro-life Religious Council, and pastoral director for Rachel's Vineyard; and Lila Rose, a student activist at UCLA who has dedicated herself to building a culture of life and ending abortion. She founded Live Action, a student-led organization that has conducted undercover investigations resulting in several exposés of corruption and illegal activity by Planned Parenthood.

In addition, former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Newt Gingrich and his wife, Callista, are scheduled to speak. Gingrich, a Republican, is rumored to be a possible candidate for president in 2012. "We believe life begins at conception,” says a joint statement issued by the couple. “It is a gift from God and must be respected as such. We deeply support Pope John Paul II’s call for a culture of life and reject a culture of death -- including acts such as abortion and euthanasia. We believe life must be protected from conception until natural death."

The arena exhibit hall for the event, which will feature 50 exhibitors and vendors, is already sold out. Some of the exhibitors include 40 Days for Life, Catholic Answers, the Catholic Diocese of San Diego, Culture of Life Family Services, the Goretti Group, Helpers of Gods Precious Infants, Human Life International, Ignatius Press, John Paul the Great University, Life Choices, Life Perspectives, Priests for Life, Rachel’s Hope, St. Ephrem Pro-life Center, St. Joseph’s Communications, and Silent No More. The entire list is too lengthy to print here, but can be found on the conference’s website (see below).

LAURETTE! Look, another demonic attempt to distract us away from gays! Will they never learn?

Newt Gingrich???? He is backing Meg Whitman. Don't the prolifers in SD check these guys out before they invite? Newt needs to be disinvited. He's just running for office and wants to develop a backing---only to betray us later with his false promises.

What a great event, as well as a great opportunity to consider Newt and his wife in light of his recent declaration that he is considering running for President of the United States. He might indeed make a good president, especially in contrast to Presidential Obama.

Posted Friday, July 16, 2010 8:39 AM By robert
it would be interesting if the mainstream media will cover it.

Posted Friday, July 16, 2010 10:19 AM By Marie
Since when is Newt Gingrich so pro-life? Seems to me that he is using the most well-known names in the pro-life movement to gain allies for political reasons. Not a good reason to go to this conference.

Posted Friday, July 16, 2010 10:53 AM By Barbara
Will those who attend the conference, including Newt Gingrich, take time to picket Planned Parenthood?

Posted Friday, July 16, 2010 1:56 PM By Lisa
Marie so if someone was not always on board with the prolife movement has a change of heart is that not acceptable? That is our whole intent isn't it? I know I'd rather have someone corting the prolife movement when seeking political office than those politicians that take blood money from planned parenthood and NARAL. Besides, I believe Newt became more prolife when he became a Catholic not too long ago.

Posted Friday, July 16, 2010 2:04 PM By perrywRinkle
Whatever his previous stance, as a Catholic he is OFFICIALLY pro-life. Now, if he just doesn't join the KC's!

Posted Friday, July 16, 2010 4:33 PM By Rose
I wish I were able to go to be around these good priests, especially Fr. Euteneur. Should be just great. Newt sounds like a good candidate to me. I hear his wife is a good Catholic who most likely had much influence in his conversion to Catholicism.

One wonders what these S.D. Knights are doing about the many, far too many, pro-abortion, pro-homosexual rights "Knights" amongst them whoes membership their "leaders" protect even to the point of forbidding Councils from enforcing their own Constitution and By-Laws. We can furnish anyone with a copy of the letter from the Supreme Advocates Office doing just that! God bless, yours in Their Hearts, Kenneth M. Fisher

Newt Gingrich certainly spoils an otherwise fine line-up.

Posted Friday, July 16, 2010 7:52 PM By Maryanne Leonard
He was a Baptist, and presumably anti-abortion, until he converted to Catholicism, his wife's faith, in March of 2009. I think his marriages, affairs and divorces would work against him as a Catholic candidate, but compared to Obama, who would kill his own grandchildren if his poor daughter got caught with an inconvenient child growing in her womb, I'd say Newt is the better choice. As well as for a thousand or two other reasons.

PROOF IS IMPOSSIBLE, but my OPINION is that while the "four marks" which identify the Holy Catholic Church-those of ONE, HOLY, CATHOLIC, and APOSTOLIC-have been challenged historically over and over again, NOBODY has tried to take from us the ONE MAGNIFICENT IMAGE shared by NOBODY ELSE-the Blessed Mother of God, Mediatriss of All Graces. What's the matter with you distracted Catholics? If you want to belong to a Church that is truly and genuinely the ONE built by the Lord, Himself, to CONTINUE HIS MISSION which His death stopped in its tracks, THEN JUST KEEP YOUR EYE ON MARY! Nobody seems to want her-that's because she is TOO CATHOLIC and, heavens, who wants to soil their hands with the purest, most loved woman who will ever be created?! Why, they may even be called-God forbid!-CATHOLIC. The God who notes the fall of every sparrow, notes the abortion count as just so many asbysmal HUMAN falls. And, MARY can dispense ALL the grace that is needed by any of us to fight the baby murder that keeps us falling!

Someone must be kidding with some of these posts. Point one: support this conference. There is only one Newt Gingrich, and several other proven pro-lifers who will come to speak and support the pro-life movement in CA. We all, Catholics who claim and practice the faith, must support this conference. Buy your ticket and come listen to these speakers. Lila Rose alone is more than worth the price of the ticket. The others are as worthy of our time and none of us who claims this most faithful of all faiths, none of us ought to miss it, or miss supporting the Knights. Mr Fisher you have got to be kidding!

Looks like a good conference worth attending, with faithful Catholic speakers, totally opposite that of L.A.'s "Religious" Education Conference. Kenneth Fisher, some KofC's can do the right thing, even if the national leadership is defective.

Posted Sunday, July 18, 2010 4:10 PM By JLS
Life Lady, you ought to pay attention to what Fisher says about the KOC; he is not kidding; babies continue to be aborted despite all the plumes and swords. Also as I've pointed out often, the Republicans had the House for sixteen years and the White House for twelve of those years ... and guess how much they reduced abortion. The KOC was also doing what it does, and many prolife orgs ... Guess what the effect was on abortion, Life Lady? The abortion levels remain well over a million per year in this nation, and now have increased in other nations due to the government voted into power in this nation, including half of the self proclaimed Catholics. How many bishops are going to show up at your conference? How many bishops telling their dioceses to vote only prolife and not proabortion will it take to end abortion? And again, tell me how many of the bishops are likely to do this. Tell me, Life Lady, how abortion will be ended by a Republican majority in House and Senate and a Republican president? Do they even have a plan for it? Will they even discuss a plan for ending abortion?

Good for you Life Lady !!!!

I don't know Life Lady -- looks suspiciously like a disguised campaign appearance for Newt. For the life of me, I can't see what he's coming for other than to advance his own political ambitions. Big mistake inviting him, assuming whoever is behind it doesn't have a hidden agenda in favor of Newt. Doesn't pass the smell test... And how sad, since the other speakers seem great. Too bad Newt ruined the stew.

Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and caldron bubble. Fillet of a fenny snake, In the caldron boil and bake; Eye of newt, and toe of frog, Wool of bat, and tongue of dog, Adder's fork, and blind-worm's sting, Lizard's leg, and owlet's wing,— For a charm of powerful trouble, Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.

The Mother of Life whose name the conference bears might have a thing or two to do with how God will grace the attendees who honor His Mother and ours.

Newt is about Newt. Otherwise there would be some substance of some kind associated with his name and face. BTW, although his face is always the same in photos and is not a great big huge poster thing like Fidel's or Chavez' or the late Sadam Hussein's or the late Joseph Stalin or Mao Tsung ... yet it is the same image with the same lack of any concrete position. He is learning the way to get votes. All he has to do now to clinch the presidency is come up with a bold face lie and gloat over how well he can put it forth. This is akin to rock stars' talents for getting teenagers to swarm the stage.

OK, Rose, hope springs eternal, and Newt is now Catholic and Reagan was not. Maybe this will be a different day. Newt's wife being Catholic instead of an astrologist like Reagan's might help also. Henry Hyde is gone, but Chris Smith is there. That makes one person in government who is prolife that I know of, the rest being pro-politics. But since there is nobody else of indefectible prolife track record to attempt to claim the Oval Office, then maybe blind trust in Newt would pay off. With all that prolife mojo surrounding Newt, maybe he will be subdued and dubbed the knight in shining armor who will rise to the occasion. After all, that is what happened to Emperor Constantine who changed Europe into a Catholic empire with one stroke of his sword. Europe, I hereby dub you a Catholic empire, he proclaimed. So, after seventeen hundred years it's about time we have in the western world an emperor, and that is what the president really resembles in classic terms, wannabe who if elected might do the very same thing. If he wants to appoint me to the tenth seat on the Supreme Court, it's alright by me.

I heard many great things about this conference. Hope all can attend. God bless. We need to see this one grow so we can have it every year. Newt is a convert to the Catholic faith. God bless him for his conversion.

JLS, hope does spring eternal, but nowt in newt. My faith isn't in politicians, any of them, and never has been. I always get irritated with people who say, "Oh, wait til so and so gets in, then things will change." Ha. If I had to vote for president today, I guess Newt would be as good as any, but let's see who comes about by 2012. I voted for a lot of "losers" in my time, being told I was wasting my vote down the toilet. I never cared, I've always voted prolife, period. But even if the ones I voted for were elected, I'd be skeptical. As far as Newt being a convert, hooray and Praise God for every convert that comes home to The Church! I'm happy for him. I'll wait and see what he does politically with his new Faith. It can't hurt him spiritually being around Fr. Euteneur and the others at the conference. And don't forget Our Mother of Life's influence. If Newt gets in and appoints you to the Supreme Court, maybe you could put in a word for the other guys on this site to join you; Nutune, Woody, perrywRinkle, R. Delano, and Canisius. I can see the heads rollin' now!

MOTHER OF GOD can't be ANY woman except the most EMPOWERED. Since the obscure historical days of the Queen of Sheba, we've seen many EMPOWERED WOMEN like JOAN OF ARC, CLEOPATRA, QUEEN ELIZABETH-and QUEEN VICTORIA, MOTHER THERESA, AND, CURRENTLY, OPRAH WINFRY. Each stands out for only a PART of the EMPOWERMENT of all women. The MOST EMPOWERED WOMAN FOR ALL ETERNITY is strong enough for the 1.3 billion Catholics in this day, plus 2000 years of- (whatever those populations would equal who came before us)- and whose faith has never more quickly identified than their know devotion to MARY, the Mother of God. Her followers naturally follow her Son, and we are called "CATHOLICS". Women need to STOP LOOKING for a woman who can proclaim their feminine rights-and men can stop looking for male benefactors! Just properly label those churches which have a right (obligation?) to bandy her name about-and we won't be entering other denominations which have counterfeited other less restrictive "Catholic" names. EMPOWER OURSELVES by following the most POWERFUL WOMAN!! (I personally love many woman who have always put Mary foremost in their hearts.) MOTHER MARY, MEDIATRISS OF ALL GRACES, lead us, we pray.

Newt is taking charge of that group of prolife activists. The Church has always tried to influence rulers and rulers always try to influence the Church. Always does not include those Church rulers who refuse to be influenced by anything including the silent screams of unborn babies. As with Fr Pavone leading a charge, so too is Fr Eutenauer. But it seems to me that the charges they are leading are in the choir loft, sad to say. What is needed is for all bishops to demand their flocks vote only prolife. That would win the elections and put prolife candidates into office. Why the bishops do not unite ... why they do not exercise the unity available to them in the Holy Eucharist is either the mystery of faith or the mystery of iniquity.

JLS great posts! You are a good man in Christ. God bless you.

Posted Monday, July 19, 2010 8:50 AM By Maryanne Leonard
I watched Newt being interviewed at length on one of the Sunday morning gasbag shows, and the change in this man is apparent. I could sense it before I knew he had converted to Catholicism, but in retrospect I believe it could be due in large part to his conversion, though all of this is speculation on my part, of course. I don't deny that this professor has taken to the political arena in the past, to great effect, nor that he is considering, as he has said himself, a run for the presidency. If he ultimately joins forces with Romney, it's possible we could have somebody in the White House who doesn't have to apologize for his pseudo-Christian minister who preaches hate of country, hate of whites, and revenge for blacks at his so-called "Christian church."

Too bad when Arnold married Maria she was unable to give him more than the weak Catholic faith she espouses, abortion promoting and al. Newt married a devout Polish Catholic American who sang in the church choir for years at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in D.C. This wife of Newt's has been a wonderful influence upon his thinking and his faith. I would like to attend the conference in San Diego and as a practicing Catholic, I forgive and forget and extend mercy. What about the rest of you on this site? Will there be mercy? Or will there be judgment? Keep in mind, the same will be extended your way.

Posted Monday, July 19, 2010 10:38 AM By Rose
They might be leading from the choir but the people in the pews are hearing their music moreso than the silent bishops. Somebody's got to speak out. I remember the days in S.D. when on a regular basis Bishop Buddy (and a few others, Bishop Maher was another one) sent letters to be read to the people by the priest at the homily so that we heard directly from the bishop on important up to date matters. The priests also need to shout from the pulpit the evils of abortion and tell their people not to vote for pro abortion candidates. I've only heard a few of them do that in the last 40 years. We all need to speak up. I think some bishops don't realize the power they in particular, have. Mariam, Mother of Life, pray for them and for us.

OneoftheSheep I appreciate your charitable post with mercy and I'm with you on this. God bless you.

Posted Monday, July 19, 2010 11:44 AM By JLS
Well, OneoftheSheep and Rose, maybe those Prolife powerhouses will change the tide. If Newt went so far as to marry the woman singer from the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception then maybe she will keep the choir of angels ringing in his ear, so that he cannot listen to the detractors.

JLS, I can't believe you would actually say that there have not been less abortions under Bush than if the rabid pro-abortion apostate Kerry had been elected. Could there have even been less, probably so, but there would have been many more under Kerry. Had Kerry won, they would already have the absolute majority on the so called Supreme Court that they now find within their evil grasps. Just Bush's reinstatement of the now defunct "Mexico City Policy" probably saved many babies lives. God bless, yours in Their Hearts, Kenneth M. Fisher

Posted Friday, July 23, 2010 3:46 PM By Abeca Christian
Kenneth M. Fisher I agree with your last post. Bush just slowed down the process and praise God for that, they gave us more time to keep defending life. I have to admit, even though Bush was not a strong leader but I did feel the blessings of having a more conservative President, now having Obama as our President, I can't say I sleep well. But I can say that I pray more. More like begging God to rescue us from this monstrous situation of having more liberals running our country. Not to mention the feeling of shame, because many powerful liberals are Catholic. That is most shameful.

Posted Friday, July 23, 2010 7:45 PM By Kenneth M. Fisher
Abeca, Talk about not sleeping well without prayers, I personally know many of the radical Demoncrats now in power like Henry Waxman. If I did not have my Rosary in hand, I am sure I could not sleep at night. God bless, yours in Their Hearts, Kenneth M. Fisher
