“Hail Goddess full of grace”

Lutheran church in San Francisco has its own version of the Rosary

“WOW -- coming from RC tradition I thought I’d never return to the Rosary. But here it is and here SHE IS. Blessed be, Mairly.”

The “here” in this message, found on herchurch.org, is Ebenezer Lutheran Church in San Francisco. But the SHE is not the Mother of God. SHE is “God/dess.”

On Wednesdays at 7 p.m., Ebenezer opens its sanctuary for the “Christian Goddess Rosary.” The church says it offers “Goddess Rosary Beads” and that “prayers and suggested meditations will be on hand as well as incense, candles and bells.”

“The Goddess rosary is grounded in traditions of the Christian Church and the proclamation of the gospel which is a vision of release from bondage for a new creation,” says the church’s web site.

The Goddess Rosary page on herchurch.org says that though “God as Father plays an important role” in Christian tradition, its “exclusive emphasis... contributes to a limited understanding of God, an understanding that supports a domination structure that oppresses and subordinates women.” Jesus used “Abba” as a “revolutionary deconstruction of domination structures of his day in both religious and social institutions.” The modern task is to do the same with “Goddess.”

Ebenezer, however, does not want to eradicate masculine images of God but to balance them with feminine images to “confront the biblical texts, products of their day and cultures, for the blatant patriarchal biases and misogynist attitudes.” And herchurch.org cites three Catholic theologians in support this confrontation: Harvard’s Elizabeth Schüssler Fiorenza, Fordham University’s Sister Elizabeth Johnson, and Rosemary Radford Ruether (who will lecture students in the course, “The History of God in Feminist Theological Discourse,” at LA’s Mount St. Mary’s College this spring.) Ruether calls the exclusive use of male imagery for God “idolatry.”

Herchurch.org offers a “Hail Goddess” prayer by feminist theologian Carol Christ, formerly of Harvard Divinity School but now director of the Ariadne Institute for Myth and Ritual in Greece. The prayer goes: “Hail Goddess full of grace. Blessed are you and blessed are all the fruits of your womb. For you are the MOTHER of us all. Hear us now and in all our needs. O blessed be, O blessed be. Amen.”

“I felt that I had stepped into a Presence, like a mother’s warm embrace,” wrote Dalyn Cook of Ebenezer’s Goddess Rosary. “The attendees were few in number, yet there was a sense of fullness in this welcoming space. I inhaled deeply the earthy scent of the incense, sending up delicate tendrils of smoke which curled around the altar in a nimbus visible against the warm rays of the evening sun filtering through the stained-glass windows....

“From the basket of rosaries, I took into my hand a strand of vibrantly-colored beads with a silver goddess icon in place of the traditional cross. The goddesses came in a variety of shapes and sizes, celebrating the beauty of the feminine form; I found reflections of my own figure in the full hips and Rubenesque curves of my goddess,” Cook wrote.

It is challenging in maintaining one's charitable christian spirit when confronted with something like this. The founder of this "rosary" and who inspires this nonsense is none other than Lucifer, who has succeeded in brainwashing these poorly confused individuals. Notice how there is no mention of the words "Mary," "Jesus," "Lord," "Holy," "God," "Pray," "sinners," and "death" in their rendition of the rosary. It makes all the sense that the devil would not allow those words into that feminist rosary, the first five cause him to shutter and coil up in misery. We have our work cut out for ourselves for the conversion of these people.

So sad, I could hardly believe it. And the Catholic News reported it? Where is this religion going? Or is it an opportunity for us to do some good?

The three named are exactly those I would have expected. Their tactics and rhetoric are long established and well known. What is NOT known is why they are still regarded as Catholic scholars.

If it wasn't so pitiful, it would be laughable. If you look at their webpage, it almost reminds me of a bunch of children who, at a slumber party decided "Hey, let's play church". They all dug deep into their 'dress-up' boxes and dressed up in their own fanciful image of what it must be like to act like an adult at church. Of course, in their childish way, they changed the 'rules' to make them more fun. Their children after all, when 'playing church', you might as well make it fun. Anyone want to play doctor next? Don't worry, we'll just dress up for fun, we don't really know what it is to be a doctor....Or a church for that matter.....

Hello Dolores, In case your confused, this isn't a Catholic group that is promoting this silliness. It is a Lutheran group. Sadly, to help give themselves some needed validation, they searched wide and far to find some dissenting 'catholic' speakers. Hypocritical catholics, such as the three they have tapped to help them, have always done far more harm to the faith of Catholics, than outside groups. Of course, that is probably the aim of groups like this anyways. If they sincerely disregarded the teachings of the Holy Catholic Church, and sincerely had their own beliefs, wholly separate from the Catholic Church, why would they feel the need to seek some dissenting Catholics to give them validation.

Luther would spin in his grave. But really, can you imagine this catching on? It would only appeal to the man-hating radical feminists.

Why is this being reported in a Catholic publication in such a way as to imply approval? Why is this outrage not being soundly condemned in a Catholic publication? The California "Catholic" Daily should be ashamed of themselves for not denouncing this utterly disgusting defiling of a holy prayer. St. Francis must be deeply sorrowful to have his holy name associated with a city that makes Sodom and Gomorrah look like Mayberry.

Clearly, these individuals are not afraid of God. The term blessed be is NOT a Roman Catholic term. It is a satanic term. These people need prayers. Reminds me of Noah's story. He was ridiculed & laughed at but when push came to shove, they certainly changed their tune. We must pray for these very lost & confused souls despite the fact that they are twisted & perverted. Their so-called 'beliefs' smack of liberal feminism (sheer stupidity) bordering on lesbianism. Yuck.

They are more Catholic than they wish to admit. At least they are performing disciplined prayer. I say invite them to a Catholic rosary service and explain exactly what it is Catholics believe, not what others perceive of them. They should also learn all about Our Lady of America (oltiv.org) and what it is She asked of us in 1956 when She appeared in Rome City, IN.

"I found reflections of my own figure in the full hips...". That says it all. Also, "the attendees were few in number..", I wonder why, probably has to do with some patriarchial conspiracy to suppress women. If these were educated women, they would understand that the use of the terms GOD, and Man are universal terms taking into account ALL, black, white, male, female, etc.. you cannnot expect that from so narrow minded individuals, feminists. I wonder if their sexual preference has anything to do with this abomination.

I am certain that Mary is shedding tears over this. Mary was a faithful Jew and then a faithful Christian. She always points to her son. As the mother of our Lord, I know she is said. Let us ask her to open the hearts of these people so that God's grace may flow in and they may ask for God's Mercy.

No wonder the Blessed Mother weeps tears of blood. What a perversion and an insult to her holiness. We don't need a new rosary. We have the one the Blessed Mother herself gave to St. Dominic. I have a great devotion to the rosary - it led me to conversion. This mockery makes me sick and sad.

Satan always attacks Mary the most. This is an attack by Satan, through some very missguided wemon full of self pride. These women offer us a false notion of the real beauty of what it is to be a woman. Mary, the mother of Christ is the greatest women in all of history. She is the means that God Himself chose to come to us. What a great and beautiful gift to the world, and that's why Satan trys to attack Our Blessed Mother so much. Mary is spoken of in the first and last books of the bible. She was fortold in the beginning and she was also given to us in the book of Revelation, as the woman clothed with the sun. Remember this as well, when God was talking about the curses that would befall man as a result of our original fall to sin in the beginning, God said one of the punnishments was that the woman would always be in wanting of the man. I am not saying that men are greater then women, but what do you think God ment by this? I believe this article about a group of people who mock the truth by comming up with their own imitation of a false teaching and prayer has something to do with it that curse God gave to His fallen people as a punnishment for their turning away from the real truth. For there is only one creature or creation ever created by God in the whole history of all of creation to ever bear or to be giving the great title of "Hail, full of Grace... Mary, the Great Mother of God.

"Lutheran church in San Francisco has its own version of the Rosary" should read: New-Age crazies in a Lutheran church in San Francisco have corrupted the traditional Catholic prayer, the Rosary based upon the Wiccan believe of a Godess as the supreme power in the universe. Same community that men wear pink dresses and woman dress as male motorcyle riders.

The purpose of the Rosary is not worship of self, but that seems to be part of the problem here. I suspect the cure for this is serious additional use of the REAL Rosary by those who know and love it.

I bet they aren't praying the apostles creed, our father, or salve regina as part of that rosary, either. It burns!!! Their pretend prayer tears up the Gospel of Luke. Gabriel did not greet Mary as, Hail Goddess! Elizabeth did not praise Mary by saying Blessed are ALL the fruits of your womb! Makes it sound like Mary was carrying septuplets or something. They address Goddess and don't ask her to pray to God for them. They truly believe this Goddess being invoked is the Goddess, and not an intercessor. Dumb idols, anyone? Blessed be is an unfinished sentence and a broken prayer, and evil can anonymously sneak in their to insert itself as the subject?/object? of the sentence. Such as ...Legion! ...Lucifer! When I see Blessed Be bumper stickers, I am sorely tempted to finish the sentence/prayer with something holy, a beatitude or one of the Divine Praises. ...the poor in spirit ...the pure of heart ...the meek ...the merciful ...those who hunger and thirst after righteousness ...those who are persecuted because of Jesus Christ ...the Name of Jesus ...the great Mother of God Mary Most Holy ...the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete ...God in His angels and in His saints get the idea? You don't have to apostatize to have a unique set of rosary beads or chaplet. Check out www.viarosa.com -- I hanker after the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit chaplet: http://viarosa.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=412 I'd like to design a Pentecost season rosary...the aves being tongues of flame beads, the paters being a dove with wings extended, the centerpiece a scene of Mary and the Apostles at Pentecost with flames over their heads, and the crucifix being the risen or ascending Jesus Christ. It would be for me to use during Easter, Ascension, Pentecost season. I can picture it in my head but I don't know that these kinds of pieces/beads exist. Blessed be the Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, from ages unto ages!

Sounds like the usual suspects are at it again. Radical feminists creating their own religion and theology so they can feel good about themselves and not feel oppressed by "hateful, mean men." Give me a break. When you pray the rosary, the traditional Catholic rosary, you pray the Gospel, the Good News. And who is the Good News? (Yes, who and not what.) The Good News is Jesus Christ. So when you pray the rosary you are praying Jesus. (Thank you, Father Corapi!) How in the world can this jive with what these militant feminsts are doing?

In the article it states that one person who said the goddess rosary felt like she "stepped into a Presence" and speaks of a "warm embrace". I think the presence stepped into was Satan which also explains the warm embrace--such as the fires of hell. We must all pray the true Rosary as was given to St. Dominic by Our Most Blessed Mother Mary for all the misguided souls and for our own perseverance living among them in today's world.

I just gave a quick look through their website and wow! All I can say is...wow! They are just off the map with their thinking. They believe the term "Father" was just a metaphor for God and that's how Jesus meant to use the term. However, they don't back this up with any biblical quotes or references or even references from any of the early Church Fathers. Oh, I bet I can guess what their response would be. "Well, the evil male heirarchy destroyed all texts that referred to God in feminine terms." Yeah, right. Please pray for the people who have been lured into this church and especially pray for its founders. May God reveal the truth to them and replace their hard hearts with soft hearts.

"Then he said to the disciple, 'Behold, your mother!'" (JN 19:27) I have only one mother in heaven, as do we all, given to us personally by our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ from the Cross. Her name is Mary, and she is blessed among women, and all generations will call her blessed. (Luke 2) I will never pray to a tawdry substitute created by "theologians". How arrogant! How tragic. In charity we can all pray for their souls and that the Holy Spirit may enlighten them in their darkness. How can we ever thank you, Jesus, for your gift to us from the cross of Your--and now Our--Blessed Mother?l Praise be the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and forever, amen.

The Bible states that in the End Times people will follow any illusion that "tickles their ear". Satan loves to distort and mimic anything of Jesus. This goddess rosary is a sad and evil imitation of the true rosary. There is only one rosary, but there are many lost souls seeking to do their own will rather than the Father's. May God have mercy on their confusion and arrogance.

We need to pray that our theologians are guided by the Holy Spirit, rather than the tireless, immovable pet causes some of them seem to push over and over. As noted by someone else below, the press just loves to latch on to the same controversial people time and again (Andrew Greeley, for instance). This, in turn, leads to them publishing books that get heavily publicized by the liberal press and then dominate the bookshelves at the chain stores (Barnes and Noble, Borders). Fortunately, these same books end up abandoned at used book stores by the dozens. These people, though they dominate the news now, will pass into history without even a footnote. However, they sometimes lead not a few down the path of diluted, "anything goes" worship that leaves the followers in the wilderness, far away from The Truth. Only prayers can help these people and others see through their folly.

In the past 40 years Satan has imitated the sacraments: in the place of baptism he has abortion, in place of the Anointing of the Sick he has assisted-suicide, in place of Holy Matrimony he substituted the perversion of two men or two women in an imitation of marriage. Now he is finding substitures for our prayers. If people can be taken in by this very obvious disobedience of the first commandment, there is probably no limit to how far they will go.

It is disgusting, I agree, but relax, people, and take it in perspective. I mean, where else in the western world would you expect this sort of thing to originate from, if not from that particular area? Please keep the whole thing in context... so much wackiness and off-the-wall-ness is just expected to emanate from there so that in reality even something as mad and bad as this will just be viewed by all right-thinking people as more of the same-old same-old from you-know-where. But pray for them, all the same.

I think that it is about time you all stopped and really look at what you believe. Go back to orthodoxy, recover your religion and maybe your country will return to the practice of some sanity. I pray to God that that he sends his Blessed Mother to your aid.

The words of the prayer are clearly Wiccan in origin. Blessed Be is a Wiccan phrase or prayer. They purport to be a Christian group, but their words and actions prove otherwise.

God help us! Makes us Rosary Makers careful where we send out rosaries. I would hate to see mine converted to this offense against the Trinity and our Holy Mother, Mary. Lord, have mercy and bring these people into the truth and turn away from this idolatry.

Pagans! Well, at least they will have something to occupy their wasted time as they walk the Labyrinth chanting Kumbaya. I agree that these souls need prayer and a lot of it. The Chaplet of the Holy Face is a great devotion, making reparation for blasphemies such as this . The devotion also calls on the Mercy of Jesus. "Arise O Lord and let Thine enemies be scattered and let those that hate Thee flee from before Thy Face....My Jesus Mercy.

Truly outrageous... but look for these feminist "rosaries" to start springing up in Catholic Churches all around the world before the summer is over.

I saw this and actually wanted to wretch. What blasphemy! This abomination is an attack upon the very gospel of Jesus Christ. However, the proper response on our part is not anger, but pity and a deep sense of concern. These people may well lose their souls with this nonsense. We must pray for them ardently. The rosary perhaps? Furthermore, this is proof positive that the so called "Catholic" theologians listed in this article are neither faithful, nor loyal. The Holy Office (now known as the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith) maintains an email link on the Vatican website. Here it is: cdf@cfaith.va We should all use it. Just be careful first, pray, and write something cogent, respectful, and humble. The Church corrects gently these days, but she still corrects, and she does so for the good of her flock. Prideful theologians need to be offered the same opportunity to repent that is offered to any other prideful sinner.

Dominus vobiscum. Greetings in the Lord Jesus!!! This makes me sick!!! What a blasphemy to Our poor Jesus and to Our Dear Blessed Mother Mary!!! This is against God!!! This is even against what the Archangel Saint Gabriel said to the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Bible!!! May Almighty God have mercy on all of us!!!

Hail Goddess full of Grace. Blessed are you and blessed are all the fruits of your womb. For You are the Mother of us all. Hear us now and in all our needs. O Blessed be. O Blessed be. Amen My comment is what a beautiful version of the Hail Mary this really is if you put aside your Catholic tunnel vision for a moment and see Mary as the Divine Mother of all who seek her intercession. The Lutherans have a great point to offer. The Holy Bible also states that God is like a Mother to us. IWhy do Catholics of whom I am one, get so steamed up with fears, if a few words are different. In God so says St. Paul, there is no division, no male or female, but all are acceptable, all are equal children. After all we are all the Divine Child the true Image and Likeness of God our Creator. Is this not so?

Posted Friday, April 27, 2007 4:25 PM By Patrick
Perhaps Rose should get her theology straight. Mary is not the "Divine" mother of us all, or the "Divine" mother of the Lord. She is as human as any of us, albeit glorified in body and soul. It is a big deal because loony radicals are trying to change language, and if they succeed, change truth into falsehood. Theirs is and Orwellian 1984 style approach, coopt the language and corrupt the true meaning. The citations of St. Paul's are taken out of context, if you view the whole body of his writings it is easy to discern that he would not support the deification of the Virgin, or the adulteration of the prayers with new age nonsense.

Rose, where, in the Bible, did Jesus ever refer to God as His mother? He didn't; He spoke of His Father. Moreover, He told His apostles to baptize "in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." Who would be arrogant enough to change Jesus' own words? Folks, if you haven't done so already, please join the Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary: http://www.rosary-center.org/nroscon.htm

Few people realize that under the policy of "pluralism" in a "democratic" society - everything is permitted. Some organization must be creating 'cults' by the hour, notice the 33000 denominations/cults in existance today, and what about the divisions within the RC and Orthodox? It seems a if an ideological virus has struck the ideological center of humanity. Whatever imagination can concoct, it becomes "faith" and religion.

ROSARY: The word Rosary comes from the Latin for "rose garden," and it is the general term used both for the prayer beads of the Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, and Muslim traditions and for sets of prayers said with the beads. As a tool of meditation, it is meant, by its repetitions, to free up the mind so that it focuses on the sole act of pray. I am a Roman Catholic...so it disturb me to see an image of a goddess on the Rosary. Mostly because it reminded me of pagan goddess forms from the past. Since rosaries are being used for many for different purposes....I wouldn't see anything wrong with what they're doing, except they are supposed to be Christians! Although, I do believe that the feminine side of God (as discussed by Blessed Julian of Norwich) and the Shekhina of Jewish studies and lore, both have a place in our study of our faith.

The Traditional Latin Mass is returning as a major course correction in the Roman Catholic Church's worship and theology. Please support it in your local parish when the Holy Father publishes his Motu Propio on the subject (expected to happen soon). There is a major spiritual battle going on for each and every soul on the planet...

No, Rose, the Bible nowhere describes God as our Mother; the closest it gets is when Christ Jesus himself laments over Jerusalem, "How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling." (Matthew 23:37 NASB) You, and the entire feminist world, have got to personally come to grips with some essential facts: God -- YHVH -- is Father, Son, and Spirit triune. He refers to Himself -- always -- using male pronouns. The Father speaks of The Son. The Son speaks of The Father. None speak of The Deity as either daughter or mother. But this is not to your disadvantage; it is to your gain. In this God, is The Father you have never known. In His Son, is the Bridegroom for whom your deepest heart longs, though you may not even be aware of it. In Him is all that your most inexpressible hunger requires to be sated. In Christ is the very Water of Life, and, if you submit to Him, your thirst will be forever quenched, and you will, at last, find rest for your soul.

As a real Lutheran, this sickens me. These are the people who give us a bad name. This is only the ideas of one congregation in a liberal church body (ELCA). I agree that this "rosary" of theirs is evil and sinfull. I pray for them, and the people that the "pastors" at the church are deceiving. Luther is rolling in his grave at seeing this.

Romans 1, men who had knowledge of God, sinned in not worshipping Him as God, but worshipped men and women as idols in the place of God. After all, Eve desired to be wise like God and so to be worshipped. This goddess rosary is the expected step from praying to our lady and the veneration of one called Mary who is a substitute for the pagan Roman goddess, who came from the Greek and from the Egyptian and Babylonian. This is the same thing as venerating a piece of bread wafer, a seen physical object made by the hands of men, as all bread is. God is unseen and must be worshipped in spirit and in truth.

There is but one Name by which we are saved, and that Name is above every other name, it is JESUS CHRIST, King of kings and Lord of lords, the only Holy Son of God, we are saved not by His mother, not by His brother, not by His disciples, not by ANYone or anyTHING except HIM. There is but one Mediator between God and man, and that Mediator is Jesus, not some priest in a confession booth, not some blaspheming babbler urging everyone to pray to the 'goddess', the only One we are to place our trust in is Jesus Christ of Nazareth, Who is the earthly manifestation of Almighty God, the "I AM" of the Scriptures, He alone is our Saviour, Praise God!

No offence is personally meant to anyone that considers themselves to be Catholic. I was raised a Roman Catholic, but God called me out of that religious system when I was a child. When I came into full understanding of HIS Word, I accepted JESUS at the age of 11. The point I want to make about this NEW Rosary, is that Catholics are doing the same thing. They pray to dead saints, the mother of Jesus and say prayers to Mary by way of a beaded Rosary...what's the difference? NONE! For neither Rosary is supported by Scripture, nor are we to pray to ANYONE, but the Father in Heaven in the name of JESUS, or Jesus himself. Nowhere in Scripture does it name Mary, or any other as co-anything with Jesus, or God the Father. God the Father says HE always was, is and will be...HE does not need Mary ruling with HIM in heaven to bring about HIS plans for mankind. HIS perfect plan was and is JESUS...and only JESUS. For men to add to that is nothing more than blasphemy, heresy and apostasy. We are told by God, in HIS WRITTEN WORD, that there is NO other NAME under heaven by which we MUST be saved, but JESUS. Jesus is the only one who can mediate for us to the Father God. Absolutely NO other can do this. Anything else is counterfeit and not of God. READ YOUR BIBLE, you will come to this understanding. God says you need NO MAN to teach you, for HE provides the Holy Spirit to bring you into ALL knowledge of JESUS. So, Rosaries, or any other such objects, prayers to other dead saints, the mother of Jesus, is NOT Biblically sound. They can't hear you anyway, the Bible tells you this, so your wasting your breath.

Victoria, Read a COMPLETE Bible! "Therefore, brethren, stand fast; and hold the traditions which you have learned, whether by WORD, or by our epistle." 2 Thess 2:14 See also Acts 8:14 (Samaria had received the WORD OF GOD, but there was no new Testament yet!) "Now I make known unto you, brethren, the gospel which I preached [no writting here!]to you, which also you have received, and wherein you stand; By which also you are saved, if you hold fast after what manner I preached [no writing here either!] unto you, unless you have believed in vain. "--1 Cor 15:1-2 "And we charge you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw yourselves from every brother walking disorderly, and not according to the tradition which they have received of us. " --2 Thess 3:6

Well, Victoria, does your Protestant "Bible" have accurate translations of 2 Thess 2:14, Isaias 59:21, Matthew 28:20, Acts 8:14, Romans 10:17, 1 Cor 15:2, 2 THess 3:6, 2 John 1:12. All these verses support TRADITION PLUS SCRIPTURE. The Bible itself refutes the illogical "sola scriptura" heresy. How could Jesus and the Apostles have expected the Scriptures to be the sole source of authority when there was no Bible for nearly 4 centuries? How much Protestantism deserves to be mocked for its stupidity!

Wow! How *heart breaking* *tears* Please read your Bibles! JESUS elevated the role of women. You've disgraced THE True & Living GOD of the universe. Remember Eve was deceived. You are carrying on a miserable tradition. It's not about useless, empty tradition, it's about a relationship w/The True & Living Lover of your soul & lifter of your head, JESUS!!! O, ABBA, open their eyes & give them understanding by the power of THE HOLY SPIRIT. Let YOUR Truth convict them of this grievous false teaching. Bring them to the end of themselves. In the Merciful Name of JESUS! Amen.

I am married and love my husband very much. I am a devout Christian, and for 55 years I have sat in the Christian church and listened to male pronouns. I don't know why, but the last year and a half it became so oppressive I could not sit there one more moment. If God is not a female or a male, why did they decide upon the male pronoun? If one researches further into early Christian documents not included in the Bible, one will find Jesus speaking to the goddess Sophia, one will find Mary Magdalene considered divine, one will find Jesus one moment appearing as a man, a child, and a woman. The richness of early Christianity is being re-born. Please remember how Jesus embraced the disinfranchised. herchurch negates nothing and adds so much.

Posted Tuesday, November 04, 2008 12:37 PM By Larry K
Katie. … So the use of the male references to God or male pronouns doesn't make you (and feminist women) feel all-important and like big-shots? Talk about vanity and self-absorbed female-centric feminism. This is about vanity and pride and your own insecurities as a woman. How does the use of a male reference or male pronoun for God detract from the dignity of you or women? It doesn't. Jesus (God incarnate) used the word Father in reference to the first person of the Trinity. Are you going to contradict, or presume to try and correct Jesus on this point? Feminism is obsessed with an equality between the sexes that doesn’t exist. It is time Katie, to put the nice feminist fairy-tale books down and realize men and women are not equal -- in fact, no 2 people are equal. Each person expresses a unique set of human qualities different from someone else, and men have general qualities different from women. Men are better at some things, and women are better at some things. Despite these differences, we can still have equal fundamental human rights. But we don't have to be equal to have them, or pursue a radical feminist notion of equality where any differences are deemed some form of prejudice. The Church is commonly referred to as "Her" or "She", and you don't see men complaining about that. St. Paul prohibited women from preaching/teaching from authoritative positions in the Church, because guess what -- men have an intellect, nature and temperament that is better suited for these positions. And I surmise it's part of the nature of women to come up with petty nonsense like this, that just demonstrates that is the case.

Posted Tuesday, November 04, 2008 2:23 PM By MarkF
Larry, While I disagree with the ludicrous feminist rosary I also disagree with you on what you said about women. Men also can come up with a lot of goofy things too. Women don't have the monopoly on stupidity and neither to men. There is a grain of truth is some of what you say. Men and women are different and the scriptures use that difference to make theological points. God is spirit, neither male nor female. Though Jesus is bodily a man, before he assumed human form he was known to the Hebrew prophets as Wisdom, and as such was personified by them as a woman. In the Bible's understanding, men are active while women are receptive. This is speaking abstractly and spiritually. For example Christ is the groom while the Church, us, is the bride. We receive and welcome him. He gives himself to us. In that sense the Church as a whole, male and female are both feminine. The Holy Spirit is spoken of as being male in the same sense - he gives himself to us and we receive. Perhaps these concepts seem foreign or even restrictive to us nowadays, but my bet is that this is how we are built both psychologically, spiritually and physically. I totally agree with Larry that ego is at the core of the feminist criticism. It's a contemporary gender based, grievance based, power politics based version of the world. Maybe it would help to remember as I said above that in our relationship with God, we are all feminine, we all receive him into ourselves. This is why the model for the Church is a woman, the Virgin Mary. Like her, we receive Christ into our bodies by means of the Holy Spirit and we give birth to him on earth in our sanctified lives and in our charity to others. Please Katie, try to accept what our holy mother Church teaches us. And please give up the gnostic ideas about Mary Magdalene being divine. That's not Christianity I'm sorry to say; that's paganism. I've learned myself the hard way to accept what the Church as a whole teaches. God bless!

One point the article fails to make clear is that Ebenezer Lutheran Church's "Goddess Rosary" is based on the Anglican Rosary. The Anglican Rosary has 33 beads and a cross (not a crucifix). The "Goddess Rosary" replaces the cross with a "Goddess" image. A careful look at the illustration on the goddess rosary page of the herchurch site shows this.
