Priest arrested in sex sting

Diocese of Monterey suspends Fr. Geronimo Cuevas following his arrest on charges of sexual battery and soliciting a lewd act

An undercover San Luis Obispo County sheriff’s deputy last week arrested the Rev. Geronimo Enrique Cuevas, 52, for lewd conduct near a secluded beach that attracts nude bathers.

Undercover deputies were stationed at Pirate’s Cove, south of San Luis Obispo, because the area has a history of sexual solicitation problems. Last Wednesday, Cuevas allegedly grabbed the crotch area of a male undercover officer. The priest was arrested and booked on two misdemeanor charges: suspicion of sexual battery and soliciting a lewd act.

When arrested, Cuevas told deputies that he was from Las Vegas and unemployed. Though he owns an apartment in Las Vegas, Cuevas was associate pastor at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Nipomo and previously was pastor of St. Mary of the Nativity Church in East Salinas. (A July 23 report published by The Californian.com quoted a St. Mary’s parishioner who said Cuevas was there until he moved to Las Vegas two years ago.)

The Diocese of Monterey issued a statement on July 20 saying that Bishop Richard Garcia has placed Cuevas on administrative leave and has removed his faculties “pending outcome of the criminal investigation.”

According the July 22 Monterey County Herald, Cuevas was arrested because he was carrying no identification. If he had carried identification, sheriff’s deputies said, he would have been cited and released. The priest is free on $2,000 bail.

Parishioners at St. Joseph’s were surprised by the news of Cuevas’ arrest, said the July 21 San Luis Obispo Tribune. “He was, from what I thought, a devout priest,” one parishioner, Rachel Rosas, told the newspaper.

The April 25, 2000 minutes of the Salinas City Council indicate Cuevas’ interest in gang problems. Listed in the minutes as pastor of St. Mary of the Nativity Church in Salinas, Cuevas spoke in favor of a restorative justice program the sheriff’s department was contemplating. According to the minutes, Cuevas “has been walking, eating, visiting, praying, counseling, and challenging gang members. Salinas must change from talkers to doers.”

Lupe Aguirre, a St. Joseph’s parishioner who, with his wife, has received food donations from Cuevas in the past, said he and the priest were from neighboring states in Mexico – Aguirre from Guadalajara and Cuevas from Guanajuato.

According to a June 2001 San Francisco Faith article, Cuevas “identified himself as a Venezuelan and pastor of Saint Mary's Church in Salinas.” According to the story, Cuevas “was dressed in civilian clothes. He said he visits the sacrament [of Reconciliation] about once a month. ‘I talk every week about it from the pulpit.’ he said, ‘and we have confessions every weekend from four to six and sometimes we go until eight or eight thirty at night.’

“Offering a unique perspective as a priest and as a foreign national, Father Cuevas observed, ‘Not many people come to the sacrament of reconciliation, compared to the number of Catholics. I think people in the American society have washed away their feeling of sinfulness. That nothing is sinful now. People in this country tend to minimize their sense of sinfulness. Nothing is a sin.”

What business does a Priest have messing around on a nude beach?!!! If these charges are true (which they probably are), this guy's sorry tail needs be tossed from the Priesthood! I hope he repents before he dies, but his being immersed in a vice friendly culture militates against his ability to know that his actions are sinful.

So is Father from Mexico or from Venezuela? This discrepancy suggests the diocese ought to look even deeper into this priest's past.

I couldn't help but think...if this male undercover officer was in a nude beach, was the officer covered or uncovered?

As a trained & practicing psychologist who was involved in the treatment & rehabilitation of fallen priests and bishops, EWTN's Fr. Benedict Groeschel counsels caution in too stringent condemnation of individual priests who have a problem. Fr. Groeschel mentions cases in which fallen priests retiring to locations away from any potential to do harm, have found that their penitential road back was the beginning of the road to heaven. "Let he among you who is without sin cast the first stone."

The article implies hypocrisy on part of this fallen priest. This is not fair and I am sure he was sincere in his statements at the time. It is tough to live in todays's world and resist temptation. The pressure on a priest must be even more severe. Maybe after 20 or 30 years of celibacy they crack in some cases. Many in the past have resorted to alcholol to deal with personal issues. I know some will write and say that these fallen priests should have tried harder in their spiritual life. I agree but they are human and we should pray for this priest whose life is now ruined.

PRAY, PRAY, PRAY FOR ALL OF OUR PRIESTS. SATAN IS OUT TO GET THEM, BIG TIME.

On EWTN's daily mass yesterday (24 July 2007), Fr. Tom Eutenauer's homily was on the Holy Priesthood. He talked about the priest's living out the life of Jesus Christ here on earth and pointing/bringing the human race closer to Jesus and eventually, a place in the eternal kingdom of God. But he warned those priests that do not live up to the priestly standard of Jesus, those who teach false doctrines, those who have succumbed to the sins of lust, pride, greed: WOE TO THEM. The homily was very appropriate and a must hear to all priests, bishops and laity. Please check it out.

As Christians in the Roman Catholic tradition we need to show Christ-like mercy and love to all those who sin, let us reach out to the sinner in the name of the Lord Jesus!! When will we stop attacking priests when they fall; pray for priests!!!! Remember, we all need the Lord to lift us up from our sin!! It is very sad but from what I am reading some of you take joy in seeing a priest in the fallen state!!! May God have mercy on all of us!!

All the Catholic priests are advised to examine their own conscience deeply and ask pardon from our Lord and try to spend some precious time before the Blessed Sacrament before they preach, from my experience I do Yoga for two hours in the morning and my mind become pure and to think about onyly good thougts to do work and make me happy always and also to overcome all the lustful thougts, Try to do Yoga, the Indaian Spirituality with different postures and prayer, May God bless and take care of weak priests in natrue.

Fr. Pushpadasonmsc, this priest does not represent all or even very many Catholic priests and besides, Indian Yoga is not really something Christians want to revert to.

A predilection to working on behalf of gang members? How edifying. Reminds one of the sorry tale of the Times Square's Covenant House founder. So edifying. We have to be vigilant re our own priests, unfortunately. Father Bruce Ritter's scam went on for years (appeal letters for his work at Covenant House - - I think I contributed, etc.).
