Will he get the Catholic vote?
San Francisco’s self-described ‘Catholic’ mayor, who has long history of openly defying Church teachings, says he’s running for governor
Gavin Newsom, the divorced San Francisco mayor who provoked a constitutional crisis in 2004 by granting marriage licenses to 4,000 same-sex couples, has made it official: he is running for governor in the 2010 elections.
Newsom, 41, a graduate of Santa Clara University who has described himself as a “lifelong Catholic,” chose to use a YouTube video, Facebook and Twitter to make the announcement on Tuesday. In the YouTube video, Newsom says, “I'm a candidate for governor of California because I know we can do better."
Newsom’s 2004 decision to grant marriage licenses to 4,000 same-sex couples in San Francisco eventually led to the May 15, 2008 California Supreme Court decision declaring the state’s prohibition of same-sex marriages unconstitutional. That 4-3 ruling was later overturned by California voters in November 2008 with the passage of Proposition 8, a constitutional amendment reserving marriage in the state to between one man and one woman. Proposition 8 is currently under review by the state’s highest court, with a decision expected by June.
Newsom, a Democrat, has regularly crossed swords with the Church, but continues to describe himself as a Catholic. Newsom openly defied California’s bishops by vigorously campaigning against Proposition 8 after the bishops officially endorsed the measure and urged Catholics to support it.
In 2006, Newsom abruptly cancelled a trip to Rome for the installation of former San Francisco Archbishop William Levada as head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Newsom said at the time that he decided to boycott Levada’s installation in protest over the Church’s prohibition on homosexuals adopting children. "The idea, the principle that two loving parents of the same sex can't be great parents and that this church is now going to start attacking gay adoptions in this country and around the world was really disconcerting," Newsom told the San Francisco Sentinel at the time.
In 2007, Newsom scandalized even ultra-liberal San Francisco when he confessed to an affair with the wife of one of his closest and most trusted aides. Newsom admitted to a brief sexual fling with the wife of Alex Tourk, who at the time was manager of Newsom’s re-election campaign and previously a trusted member of the Newsom administration. Newsom said he had a drinking problem and that the affair occurred while he was undergoing a divorce from his first wife. Tourk resigned; Newsom entered a rehabilitation program.
On Feb. 23, 2007, Newsom issued the following proclamation: "Be it resolved that I, Gavin Newsom, Mayor of the City and County of San Francisco, congratulate Colt Studios on the occasion of their 40th anniversary and proclaim February 23, 2007, as Colt Studio Day in San Francisco!" Colt Studios is one of the largest purveyors of hardcore homosexual pornography in the world. Colt’s web site lures visitors by telling them to "come inside to experience the hottest man-on-man action."
Newsom also issued a proclamation welcoming the 2007 Folsom Street Fair, whose publicity mocked Christianity by lampooning the Last Supper. The publicity poster, which created a national outcry, showed Jesus and His disciples as leather clad homosexual sadomasochists who, instead of sharing bread and wine, were gathered around a table full of sex toys. The event honored by Newsom describes itself as “the world’s largest leather event.”
Despite his record, Newsom told The Santa Clara, the magazine of his Jesuit-run alma mater in a February 2008 interview that he “still has tremendous admiration for the Church and very strong faith.”

It should be noted that city officials said the porn studio proclamation in 2007 was issued without the mayor's knowledge. The document, bearing Newsom's name, was presented by a representative of the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Services. Newsom's office issues thousands of proclamations each year, most covering innocuous topics and are typically issued by the Neighborhood Services Office without the mayor or his top aides reviewing their content, which was the case with the document honoring the porn studio, Newsom's spokesman said. After this incident, the mayor changed the policy to have any potentially controversial proclamation cleared by either his chief of staff or director of government affairs.

This is exactly what excommunication is for... Let's see if the church leadership has the GUTS to do it! For this heretic to be allowed to use the term, "Catholic" is an insult to our Lord! The ONLY way to shut him up is excommunication! Let's see how many Catholic votes he gets if he's being excommunicated while running for governor!

This man must NEVER become governor. We can not allow this to happen. Everyone who is reading this must do everything in their power to get the word out about the kinds of deviant events, activities and lifestyles this man supports and even endorses. If this man can sleep with one of his closest friend's wife, congratulate a filthy pornography producer and allow the Folsom Street Fair which is the most deviant (EVIL, EVIL, EVIL) perverted public event in the U.S. maybe even the world in his city then what can we expect him to do if and when he is governor of California? NOTE: The public sex acts that occur every year at the Folsom Street Fair in broad day light on public streets are so disgusting and revolting not to mention a health risk that it is necessary to have heavy industrial plastic to be wrapped tightly around U.S. mail receptacles, light poles, trees, parking meters, etc, so that bodily fluids are not in contact with these things. Parents/caregivers have been known to bring their small children to this even. Ask yourselves what kind of man would allow this kind of event in his jurisdiction.

Newsom says that he "still has tremendous admiration for the Church and very strong faith." I wonder how many people actually believe that? But a corrupt people will elect corrupt leaders.

And the Catholic Church has been virtually silent while Newsom pollutes the landscape with his vile policies. In fact, very little has been said by local or national bishops about what Newsom says about a wide variety of issues (e.g., homosexual marriage, homosexual adoption, and the like). Newsom will likely lose because CA is not all like San Francisco (although it is getting there quickly). But, Newsom is a western version of President Obama, so he might have a chance to win. In any event, CA and national bishops should jump at the chance to challenge him everywhere on his poison beliefs. Maybe we can import a Mexican bishop or two -- real men, real leaders, real Catholics.

Well you know what they call him, "Any two-some Newsom", who said about gay marriage, "It's going to happen, whether you like it or not." He's a sicko and a lightweight politically. SF is in it's worst budget crisis since the Great Depression ($576 million deficit). Pray to God that someone of real substance and good character runs...

If requirements for a candidate for Governor in this state are to denounce all priniciples of the Catholic faith yet claim to be a church member such as Arnold does, I say he fits the bill.
It will be a sad day if this loser ever takes the reins of our great state.
Is there anyone who can speak to him of a well-formed conscience? He certainly needs a copy of the Catechism of Our Church so that at least he knows the truth that he will be ignoring as governor.

Will he get the Catholic vote? Yes, because CA gave Obama the Catholic vote and he opposes every single tenet of our faith.

Mr. Newsom's rebellious behavior shows his spiritual and psychological immaturity. He is unable to lead California forward, but will bring us backward to pre Christian times with his advocacy for sex, homosexuality, and the old Roman patronage system. He is unfit for duty.

Newsom is a sick man! With every sick and mental man there are his followers!

I will enjoy Not voting for Newsom for Governor. He is clearly out of touch with God and defies the will of God at every turn. Newsom is a disgrace who should be shunned until he decides to repent and follow the teachings of our Holy Catholic Church.

Yes, he will get the "catholic" vote, just as Obama did. God help us.

He will get the 'so called Catholic' vote. Most post v2 Catholics don't follow church law anyway. Just ask them. They think like Protestants, that all their sins were forgiven so they can believe what they want and do what they want. Their vote is no different than the general public.

Gruesome Newsom (or Gavin Nuisance as he is known to some) will get the "Catholic" vote, because about one-half of those who call themselves "Catholics" reject the Church's teachings on morality. Gruesome Nuisance will be the poster boy who validates their apostasy.

News reports said that Newsom got "married" in July 2008 to Jennifer Siebel, an actress, at her parents' ranch in Montana. No word on what kind of ceremony it was. Nancy Pelosi and Willie Brown were guests (it figures). The divorce of Newsom and his actual wife was finalized in Feb. 2006. Newsom's office announced in February 2009 that Jennifer is expecting.

How many of us are there that worked so hard to get Prop 8 passed? There are thousands of us. And we can all pull together again to ensure that this person does not become elected to governor. We also need to find the right man, or woman, who can properly represent us, with family values, who is not afraid to stand up for the values that a majority of people in CA ascribe to. What good will it do if we don't back the right person? Let us pray about this, and then find the person we know we must elect, to ensure that our state can regain its equilibrium, and make us all able to stand tall for California. We thought Arnold was that person, but sadly we found out he was not. Now we all have to work doubly hard to find the right person. Let's get to it folks...

Elizabeth, Newsom's office may claim he had no knowledge of the proclamation but they can't claim he has no knowledge of the various perverted STD spreading public events that take place in his city. I called his office a couple of years ago to express my concern and shock of the ongoing Folsom
Street Fair and the receptionist tried to transfer me to the GLBT Liaison. I told the receptionist I would like to speak to the heterosexual liaison and I was told there was none.

We all need to pray for him!
And everyone......
We all do not know what has been done 'behind the scenes' regarding his relationship witih the Church.
Pray!!!!!!!!

And please let's not forget the insulting, scandalous, narcissistic admonition he directed at the Archdiocese/Church when participating in an interfaith prayer breakfast earlier this year. Ignoring the hundreds of commited community service volunteers being honored, he chose insted to lambast the Archbishop in this public forum. The mayor's behavior was shameful by even the lowest standards of civil behavior. It's funny how this item faded from public view so quickly.

Anita, I do not believe that Vatican Council 2 made protestants out of Catholics ... I knew almost nothing of the Catholic Church until 1979, and did not run into a traditional Latin Mass until about 1995. And in reading the V2 documents, I was not led to protestantism nor to V2 Catholicism, but further into Catholicism including the TLM. What I am saying is that nothing Catholic leads to protestantism or to psuedo-Catholicism ie the junk you are criticizing. What I'm saying is that the morally lax Catholics choose to flaunt God not because of Vatican 2. Many
Catholics make their choices and make gravely bad ones such as are debated on this site all the time. They have the spiritual resources of the Sacraments, yet make these heinous choices.

I am always amazed at how dependent people are on their elected officials to give them permission to follow their Catholic faith. Jesus came to us at a time of tremendous evil and domination by a broken and corrupt Roman empire. He did not campaign against civil leaders. He claimed His kingdom was NOT of this world.
Perhaps some of our own disfunction is that we over react to everyone elses moral life and under react to our own. Wouldn't it be shocking for a reader of this post to say "I had better pray to be a better Catholic and live my faith in the public arena with courage and conviction" For you and I will only be answerable to God at the end of our life about our behavior - not Newsomes, or Obamas.
I pray for my own soul that its conversion will touch the hearts of those with whom I live and vote. Calm down, in our sacred history the Church has survived - no THRIVED - in tough times. May this crisis deepen our own faith and call each of us to a continued conversion of our own hearts!
Good overcomes evil!

Having had to put up with the antics of Gavin Gruesome and his ilk in SF for many decades, I am just disgusted. With friends like him, Catholicism does not need enemies.

Paul, I hate to break the news to you, but the voices of Catholics on this site result from their Catholicism. You've really clipped out a lot of the New Testament and the rest of Catholic history in your interpretation that true Catholics go around town doinking people with their magic wands.

Lisa T, a mayor is not a monarch or dictator. He does not have absolute authority to restrict public events. He's required by law to accomodate them, whether he personally likes them or not. And even if you were to call the Vatican and ask to speak to the "heterosexual liaison", you'd be given a similar response as you received from the mayor's office. Likewise, if you called and asked for the "homosexual liaison". The offices are not identified on that basis.

Pamela, a mayor has the authority to enforce or not enforce the laws. There was illegal activity going on at Folsom Street, which the mayor could legally have tackled. He didn't because he pushes the perversion of the century, revels in it, and wants everyone to experience it ... that is the gay agenda.

I would never ask any San Francisco person for a homosexual liaison. It is obvious how they would interpret such a request. Yuck!!!!

Pamela,
Let me clarify. I did not request to speak to a heterosexual liaison until the receptionist/operator tried to transfer me to the GLBT liaison. I just called to complain about the Folsom Street Fair and the operator immediately wanted to transfer me to the GLBT liaison. I doubt the Mayor's office has a heterosexual liaison for the heterosexual community.
