“They’re nothing more than a baby-killing organization”

Orange County supervisors cut off funding to Planned Parenthood

The Orange County Board of Supervisors has voted unanimously to rescind a contract with Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties because of the organization’s links to abortion.

“I don’t believe the county should be funding abortion, and I don’t believe the county really should be involved in funding an organization who performs about 35 percent of the abortions in the country,” said Supervisor Chris Norby, the Orange County Register reported.

The 5-0 vote came on Tuesday, March 10, following a lengthy debate and many comments from the public. Supervisors directed county staff to end funding to Planned Parenthood within 30 days under a $7.5 million contract with the Orange County Coalition of Community Clinics. County health officials should find another member of the community clinics coalition that could use Planned Parenthood’s share of the contract money, supervisors decided.

Altogether, Planned Parenthood had been slated to receive $341,788 under two contracts through the Coalition of Community Clinics – one for $50,000 to provide immunizations and a second for $291,788 to provide teens and pre-teens with sex education, including information on birth control and sexually transmitted diseases.

It was the larger of the two contracts that received the ax from the supervisors. The board also voted to ask county attorneys to look into the legality of their decision and to report back to the supervisors before it takes effect after opponents of the action raised the issue during discussions of the funding cut, the Register said.

“It’s clear this decision is being driven by personal religious ideology and not the vision of health care for the county,” Jon Dunn, president of Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties, told the Register following the vote. “They’re opposed to our organization because they’re opposed to a woman’s right to choose.”

“Please discontinue this support of Planned Parenthood,” Buena Park pastor Wiley Drake asked the supervisors during the public comments portion of the meeting, the Register reported. “They can blow smoke all day long, but they’re nothing more than a baby-killing organization.”

The matter of the Planned Parenthood contracts was first brought to the attention of the board in February by Supervisor John Moorlach, who expressed surprise after an Orange County resident told him Planned Parenthood was getting county funding.

"We have a problem with financing Planned Parenthood, period," Mario Mainero, Moorlach's chief of staff, told the Register in an earlier story about the supervisor’s decision to ask his colleagues to rescind the contracts. "We just don't think government money should be used to talk to teens and preteens about birth control and abortion."

I'm impressed.

Amen, amen, amen! What a move. Yes, PP President Jon Dunn said it correctly when he equated the County's move as against abortion. The game is afoot -- time to bring down all public funding for abortion and for its cousin, the type of birth control information that leads to nothing but sexual license. Deo Gratias.

Good news the funding has been stopped. The bad news is that Planned Infanticide was ever funded at all . As far as Mr. Jon Dunn (pres. of Planned Infanticide- Orange Co.) goes IMHO I think the commisioners were not so much "opposed to a woman's right to choose" as they are opposed to the murder of babies. I pray that moral thinking like this will spread to other counties in California. God Bless

Grisha, wrong. When VoTF first fired up, I engaged in some correspondance with one of the board members. The guy became extremely deceptive and with an extremely nasty attitude. VoTF is an agent of the devil.

A breath of fresh air! Politicians who vote with their convictions, including a sense of right and wrong. Long may they reign. They will be in my prayers of thanksgiving today for refusing to pay the ransom for needless murder of the unborn.

Let's all pray that the Supervisors will be successful and set a much needed precedent. Maybe other bodies will follow suit. At the very least it will help shine a light on Planned Parenthood, and help people to see the nature of the 'invaluable services' PP provides. Maybe more people will learn of their practice of shielding abusers of young girls and of the pornographic website for teens that they operate, and conclude the services are not really invaluable after all.

I am moving to Orange County! What a wonderful beginning to that county's stand for a woman's right to choose life. Talking to teens about sex is a parental right and responsibility, not PP's. They would like us all to believe that they know best. Not so. They know nothing about your child, and nothing about your family. The best way to protect your child against STD's is to talk to them and listen to their concerns. Then all parents need to stand together in Faith in God to guide their teens into adulthood. God Bless these brave and intelligent people...

“It’s clear this decision is being driven by personal religious ideology and not the vision of health care for the county.” Well, it's clear to me that the contract was set up in the first place by people who wanted to shove abortion down our throats, not by people who actually care about women. Take it like a man, Jon Dunn. Your organization has gotten fat and happy off of human suffering.

This decision gives me much hope that there ARE prolife politicians, if only on the local level. It is people like these supervisors who should be running for state and national office, and replacing the anti life people who have been elected in the past. God bless them. They are in my prayers.

Wow, I'm thrilled, a few more of our citizens' lives are saved. Why should we fund an organization that kills more of our fellow countrymen than any war has?

What a great story! Almost makes me have faith in (some) politicians again. Now if only the gargantuan L.A. county would do it. If only. THAT would take a miracle the size of Our Lady reclaiming Her city again. If enough Rosaries would be said by the faithful towards that end, i.e. the L.A. county Board of Supervisors rescinding THEIR PP contract, THEN we'd know we might be turning a corner in our culture war. Why don't we all begin to see if we can't make it happen? & GOD BLESS THE CALIF. CATHOLIC DAILY FOR MAKING US ALL AWARE OF THIS VICTORY! -- MARKRITE

Chris, you are wonderful!!! It takes strong people to stand up for what is right. God Bless you and the others. A group of us, in Portland, OR, have been working to stop Planned Parenthood from building a regional baby killing facility on Martin Luther King, Bv. You give us Hope. I am confident that you will be saving thousands of lives!! Thank you. Joan Lauren

Well I certainly hope that everyone who is commenting here is going to put your money where your beliefs are and plan on financially supporting all the women whose health is going to suffer because of this kneejerk decision.

This is great. It, too, gives me confidence in some politicians again who are not afraid to do what is right regardless of what some say. Now let us have more of them who refuse to put our tax dollars into the killing of the innocent.

Yes Mr. Norby you are absolutely right! America needs to stop funding the killing fields that perform 35% of this nation's abortions. Let's all pray and hope that Chris Norby and the Orange County Board of Supvervisors have begun to start a new trend that will sweep right across America.
