“At least five members of the audience walked out”
Bishop Soto stuns national homosexual ministries conference
(Editor’s Note: For the complete text of the bishop’s speech, see related story in today’s edition, “It is sinful.”)
When two Catholics from Southern California learned that Sacramento Coadjutor Bishop Jaime Soto was to be the keynote speaker at the National Association of Catholic Diocesan Lesbian and Gay Ministries conference in Long Beach on Sept. 18, they decided to attend themselves to see and hear the talk in person. They say what they witnessed was a bishop who “courageously but gently” gave a clear presentation of Church teaching on sexuality.
After California Catholic Daily reported on Bishop Soto’s plans to attend and speak at the conference (“Birds of a feather?” Sept. 15, 2008), many readers expressed disapproval or worry over how to interpret the soon-to-be Bishop of Sacramento’s decision. Bishop Soto will take over the diocese from retiring Bishop William Weigand on Nov. 30. The National Association of Catholic Diocesan Lesbian and Gay Ministries, based in Berkeley, is a network of local ministries that has the reputation of taking, at best, an ambiguous stance on the moral character of homosexuality and homosexual acts.
But there was noting ambiguous about Bishop Soto’s remarks to the group. “Sexual relations between people of the same sex can be alluring for homosexuals, but it deviates from the true meaning of the act and distracts them from the true nature of love to which God has called us all,” Bishop Soto said. “For this reason, it is sinful. Married love is a beautiful, heroic expression of faithful, life-giving, life-creating love. It should not be accommodated and manipulated for those who would believe that they can and have a right to mimic its unique expression."
At least five members of the audience walked out during the bishop’s address. When he finished speaking, there was general silence -- with only a very small number applauding.
The chairman of the conference then announced that the bishop would answer questions at a reception that would be held in another room. That led to widespread expressions of disapproval from members of the audience, who said they wanted to be able to express their responses immediately. It was agreed that those who wanted to speak would line up. The bishop was told twice by the chairman that he was free to leave if he wanted -- or to stay and listen. Bishop Soto stayed and sat quietly listening to every response.
A series of about eight speakers came to the microphone to express their unhappiness with what the bishop had said -- and what they felt he had not said. One woman said, in essence, "We know what the Church says. What we wanted you to talk about is the value of our lived experience as lesbian women and gay men."
Two speakers -- one man and one woman -- thanked the bishop for his address and voiced their agreement with what he had to say.
While the audience members were responding to the bishop’s remarks, a board member of the National Association of Catholic Diocesan Lesbian and Gay Ministries came up to one of the tables in the room and said, "On behalf of the board, I apologize. We had no idea Bishop Soto was going to say what he said."

Well, what did he think the Bishop was going to say? The official teaching of the Church has been both clear and explicit for years. Love the sinner, Hate the sin. Did they think he would say, Yes, its a sin, but we understand and if you cannot resist, it's really OK?

Thank You, Bishop Soto, for having the courage to stand up and charitably say what needed to be said and for courageously upholding Divine Truth in love.

So they 'apologized' because a Catholic Bishop had the temerity to tell the gathering the unvarnished truth about the teachings of Christ with regard to sexuality.
Christ told us 'your sins are forgiven go and sin no more' ....
that doesn't allow for the establishment and support of dissident aggressive minorities within and without the church who refsue to accept that their particular behaviour is sinful. So, lets get together and pressurise for polygamy...... hey if it's a 'loving' partnership between kind, consenting spiritual adults, why not? God will forgive everything, despite what the Bible says...... according to some.

Thank God for Bishop Soto. Let us pray for him and stand behind him as he shepherds the People of God in Truth and Charity. God is love, Incarnate in Christ. It is an injustice to water down the teachings of the Catholic Faith in a false sense of empathy. Not one of us is without sin - so this talk is not "finger pointing". It is, however, just and courageous servant-leadership. Thank you Bishop Soto.

Imagine! A board member apologizing to active gays about the words of a good bishop who merely repeated what the Catholic Church said about love, gay relationships and gay sex. Bishop Soto's words were needed. The silly and whining woman who said that she wanted him to talk about "the value of our lived experience as lesbian women and gay men" really wanted him to give the all-to-typical wink, wink, nod, nod to her, that their, sinful behavior. The so-called "National Association" should probably disband as it clearly serves to misinform gays about the propriety of what they are doing. We all sin. Hopefully when we do, we hear others lovingly tell us to stop and to repent of what we are doing. There are consequences for our sins and grave consequences for dying in a state of sin, without the benefit of at least confession. Gays need to be told this: in America you are generally free to act as you will and you can go ahead and have consensual gay sex. However, in each and every case that you do this, you are committing a mortal sin. If you continue to do this, and do not repent and atone for these sins through confession, penance, and works of mercy and prayer, you will likely be lost. At first I was against Bishop Soto giving this speech. I am so pleased to have been wrong.

Bishop Soto is a hero! Going into the lion's den and speaking God's truth in the face of all that reaction . . . which is sure to have been vindictive . . . the man is truly worthy of his leadership position! He must have a winning way about him, and I would guess is respectful of others who do not share his beliefs, or the homosexual community would not have misjudged him as a supporter and perhaps "bird of a feather" as had been suggested by the previous article. We all owe Bishop Soto a great round of thundering applause, smiles, hugs, handshakes, and also public apologies for fearing, suspecting, and/or insinuating that he would not speak for traditional Catholic values in a venue such as a gathering of homosexuals and lesbians. I am so proud of him and so thankful. He may not get another chance to speak before this group, but at least they know that while they were not personally being denigrated, Bishop Soto is a man who is worthy of respect because he will not abandon Church teachings just because others want him to.
Wow, just what we want in our bishops: moral leadership coupled with compassionate guidance. Let us thank God for him, and let us thank him for his courage in offering moral leadership to those who would rather bring pressure to selectively twist our Church's teachings to suit their behavior than examine their own behavior.

Thank you, Bishop Soto, for your courageous stand on life! It is necessary to speak the truth in season and out of season. You did so with love. You did not flee from the wrath. You sat there quietly and listened to those who were disappointed that you did not bless their lifestyle. You speak in persona Christi and you could no more approve of same-sex relations than Christ could.
Perhaps it is time for a change. No longer can we deviate from the straight and narrow path Christ has put before us. We need to pick up our cross and follow Jesus. Does it require an apology when one invites a descendant of the 12 apostles to speak and he does so in faithfulness to the truth? One can only say that the board member of the National Association of Catholic Diocesan Lesbian and Gay Ministries needs to look his or herself in the mirror and apologize to Bishop Soto not to their rebellious members who want their ears tickled with false doctrines in these end times.

"At least 5 member of the audience walked out."
In studying Acts of the Apostles, I contrast that with the 3,000 people who were converted on the spot in hearing the good news of the gospel of Christ preached by Peter after Pentecost. Come Holy Spirit of God and touch the lives of your hurting people. Let this be a new season where people walk away from hurting and hurtful lifestyles and into the light and love of gospel truths.Your brothers and sisters in Christ want to minister to you, teach you, heal you, break bread with you, be in community with you, and witness to the awesome power of God. Break those chains! In the name of Jesus, we break all the chains that bind the hurting people in our Diocese and throughout the nation and world. Amen.

Thank You California Catholic Daily! Your incredible discipline, hard work and sacrifice to keep Catholics informed has helped to bring this truth to our brothers and sisters in Christ. When a board member apologizes for having no idea that Bishop Soto was going to say what he said, something big has happened. This was not the expected talk. Keep 'shining' the light! Bishop Soto's truthful talk was an important step in the right direction. Thank you again California Catholic Daily!

Thanks be to God for a bishop who is not afraid to speak the truth in love. Over the past few months, I have seen comments to other articles at this site condemning Bishop Soto, apparently based on pure speculation, for allegedly failing, allegedly preparing to fail, to teach forthrightly on this subject. I hope that we all will learn from this not to be guilty of rash judgment. The Bishop was right to go, and he was showed great love in telling the people there what they needed to hear, whether or not it was what they wanted to hear. May he do the same for the rest of us.

The apology given to the audience after the bishop spoke was an outrageous act, which serves to unmask the lack of true Christian Faith in those involved in that "ministry". Thankfully the bishop is a true and corageous shepherd. When sheep stray they must gently be brought back into the fold. He has begun the work, and those sheep who take the gently given direction will hopefully return and truly represent the love of Christ.

Back in the early 1980s Cardinal Mahoney then Bishop of Stockton put on an orthodox appearance until he was appointed to Los Angeles. Bishop Soto is already being mentioned to be a canidate to replace Mahoney in a few years. i have heard that hes not that good so dont be surprised if he prepping for LA, until then i'll give him the benefit of doubt and wish him Courage Zeal and JESUS's blessings!!!!!!!!

For women and men with same-sex-attraction: Please read Bishop Soto's words again with an open mind and a loving heart. You, like everyone else, are a child of God born either male or female, and this is the only label any of us should identify with. Don't be afraid to let God help you break free from the bonds of your homosexual desires. There is earthly help also - with spiritual direction from a "Courage" support group. Remember you are unconditionally loved by God and your Church.

ED,
I recall an address to a synod of bishops in Rome in 1988. It was made by a young archbishop who has been passed over for the red hat. He spoke to the need for a clear delineation between "ministry" and "charism", the ordained and the laity, both in liturgy and service. Cardinal Mahoney was elevated at the next conclave.

I think he said what needed to be said. He will get the support of the Church as he should, it doesn't matter if a group didn't like what he said. Sometimes they don't, but it needed to be said and he did and he's right.
I'm tired of people not wanting to step on homosexual's toes, if they don't like it, then they're going to have to deal because this is the Church's teachings. Always has been, always will be and thank God for that!

As a Catholic Seminarian, I can tell you that Bishop Soto's comment were the right comments and that they are overdue. In seminaries today, including my own, there is underlying gay culture that will eventually feed into the caste of priests and bishops and that will be a God-fearing day. Their ideas are not what they should be and they will make every attempt to silence any opposition. This happens even now in my own seminary. SPEAK LOUDLY BISHOP SOTO.
The gays think that Jesus' words: "If a man looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart" do not apply to them. They constantly divert attention from THIS sin to the issue of affirming human value.
And what they are really saying is: "Don't tell me I'm wrong, just tell me I'm a good person." They appeal to Christian charity so as not to know their guilt, for as Paul writes, "it is our conscience that judges us".
|

ssoldie, Soto could have heard "their" confessions? Only if "they" had done something wrong. Loving someone is not a sin. There is more sin and hate displayed on this blog. than anyone could find at Gay Pride Parades anywyere in the world. At least Soto was given the freedom to speak, whereas, clergy abuse victims and their supporters are denied that right in their own church, especially in the archdiocese of Los Angeles.

I think the Bishop was heroic in face of an unfriendly crowd. The Bishop is really a good Bishop to say what he said showing the moral fiber that has been missing in the last 40 years. I think there will be some soul searching after his speech and this is a good thing as Jesus loves the sinner.

""The National Association of Catholic Diocesan Lesbian and Gay Ministries?" Isn't that like having a bake sale coordinator for Weight Watcher's meetings? " Yes Sick and Tired, it seems clear from this article that the purpose of this organization is to sway the Church in Shawna's direction, that is, to put the wine of the sexual revolution into wineskins of a new modern orthodoxy. For most in that organization they are selling donuts laden with fat and sugar, metaphorically speaking. Only a few are peddling really healthy baked goods. I think that silence bellowed up and down the coast and across the country. Let us hope the bishops are all listening.

When Bishop Soto's attendance was first announced, he was excoriated by those who presume they are in a position of equal dignity as the Apostles whom Christ appointed. Just let them stand the pressure the Bishops have to endure for 5 minutes, they'd crumple like Elphaba, the mean lady in the Wizard of Oz. If you are anxious about how the Church Militant will hold up, pray to God for your anxiety to be relieved. If you have the courage to support our Bishops, pray for your courage to be increased to the point where you are willing to share in Christ's sufferings. If you can't overcome your anxiety and you can't stand to suffer, at least have the grace to keep you mouth shut.

Margie, I think I know who you are (did you stand up to the CMA?), and usually I find your comments moderate. Jay S. Thank you for thinking of me. What do I have to say about this? I think Bishop Soto accurately articulated the teachings of the Church here. However, I don't believe he has made a case that this automatically translates into voting for Prop. 8. Given that a man who was thought to be homosexual was killed in a gay bashing in his own diocese recently, it would have been a good thing if he had also spoken against homophobic violence.

Thank you so much Bishop Soto. I must apologize for my judgment a few days ago when I saw that a bishop would speak at this event and lead so many souls away from Christ. Instead, you proclaimed the Gospel of Life in charity for the benefit of all. Unfortunately, you know that many walked away...I pray that some heard your words and they will take root and bear fruit, the fruit of chastity that the world is so sorely in need of. Do not be afraid to address the married Catholics who need to hear that contraceptive sex is also "deviates from the true meaning of the act and distracts them from the true nature of love to which God has called us all." So many of us have contributed to the culture of death, not just those with a same sex attraction who have chosen to embrace this lifestyle. It seems to me that heterosexuals have the led the way to this licentious society. Peace to you. I will pray for you and all bishops.

Oh, LOL. When I saw the headline, I thought the article was going to say someone was saying "it's all OK, anything goes" and people were standing up for truth and justice by walking out.
I do have to say, now, that I don't think that snippet of quote from the Bishop does the Church's teaching justice. I hope it doesn't actually sum up the entirety of what he said. I mean, the faith is no dualistic thing. It's not "straight good, gay bad." The faith calls for the third thing that rises above both: chastity. Everyone is called to chastity - gay, straight, married, single.

What a joy to read about the good bishop's address to a group that needs to hear the truth. Eternity is a long time and perhaps some will listen and change their ways. If so, the bishop will have been responsible for the salvation of souls headed for destruction. May God and The Blessed Mother shower Bishop Soto with graces.

Here in Canada, things have gotten so bad that a bishop has been charged with "hate speech" before the Human Rights Commission for simply affirming the teachings of the Catholic Church. Fight the good fight, Bishop Soto. There will be people who hate you for this (I'm sure you will be vilified at the next Gay Pride parade), but remember Jesus said if they hate me, they'll hate you too. We must never be surprised at the animosoty of those who want to cling to their sin. But we must pray for them.

Yes, we must pray for such a bishop and others like him. Hopefully others will gain courage from his example to do the same. This audience was still connected to the Church somehow, but the more vile and militant groups, once they read of this, will want his head on a platter. Pray, Michael, for his protection.

Thank you Bishop Soto for your comments and now for a few of my own, i have always believed that these homosexual and lesbian people are demon possessed it is not a life style, they are not born this way, it is not an illness, it is a spirit that can even enter when the child is in the mothers womb. why is it that our christian brothers and sisters know the truth behind the real reasons for this deviant disorder and we as catholics still can't get it right what these individuals need is a full blow exorcism or deliverance so they can be set free from the bondage they are in. The word of God does not lie, and in his word it states it is an abomination to the Lord to lie with another man ect need i say more.so the answer is not to say oh so and so continue to be homosexual just live a chaste life and everything will be ok that's like saying to a kid go to the local candy store but never ever want or touch candy again yeah that will work, don't think so. we need to pray for these people that they finally recieve the right kind of help that they need from a true deliverance minister or an exorcist that really knows what he's doing.

I thank God for Bishop Soto's good example, and pray that all priests and bishops will have the courage to speak the truth even to those who do not want to hear it. Jesus said, "You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." On the other hand, the falsehoods, distortions, and lies cannot make anyone free, but only serve to enslave them.

My utmost support go to this courageous bishop who also will be the object of my most heartfelt prayers. Bishop Soto preached the Gospel "in and out of season" to an audience accustomed to receiving a free pass from other ecclesiastics.
If there were a "St. Paul Award" for courage in preaching, Bishop Soto would've earned it. Praised be Jesus for having given to the Church this courageous successor to his Apostles.

Those who live the gay lifestyle need to be delivered of their personal demons and healed of the abuse or neglect they suffered, resulting in their choice of this lifestyle. God can work miracles and I pray that all will see his grace and mercy in their lives.

Yay Bishop Soto! Well done.
See, the thing is, if you want to be included in the Catholic Church you have to be willing to 'get with the program' which is conquering sin, and getting ready for heaven. It's not just homosexuals who have challenges with that--so do cleptomaniacs, adulterers, fornicators, gossips, liars--in other words, the church is there to help sinners get over sin. If homosexuals aren't sinners, and homosexual acts aren't sins, (like if cleptos aren't sinners and theft isn't sin)we don't have anything else to offer you!

Deo Gratias for this Bishop and his words of Catholic truth to homosexuals, etc. So many of the clergy have confused homosexuals because not only have they not taught Catholic truth but they are practicing homosexuals themselves! It is Catholic homosexual bishops who have infiltrated into the church and who have led layman to think it's okay to be a catholic and practice homosexuality and so we need to fully show our support for Bishops like this one who uphold true Catholicism!

O'Connell, what's the name of the gander you're riding on this thread? It is a bishop's responsbility to not excoriate his flock ... although you make a good point that the flock needs to do something other than act out the condition of being coriation. Bishops serve the sheep, not the other way around. He has taken this necessary step, now, in his mission to do this very service. Recall that the Church is hierarchical, and leadership is important. Much of the flock has been bleating anxiously for decades because many among the apostles' chosen sons have excoriated their own souls along with those of their charges. Bad leadership will get mowed down one way or another. The Lord, in His mercy, has stepped in at this moment into the lives and actions of several dozen bishops in this nation alone ... hopefully this jump start, this wake up call will be honored for at least the lifetimes of these bishops. What might happen to such bishops who fall back once again into whatever condition has allowed so much moral chaos to happen in the Church?

Put more simply, the guilt is on those who cause complaints, not on those who make complaints ... Since God does not cause problems, then it must be those who refuse to do His Will ... So, O'Connell, how do you dump the guilt on those who have clamored for justice? Don't make no sense, right?

Nothing surprising about what the Bishop said. You don't get to be an RC bishop without toeing the Vatican line.
It's just unfortunate that the heirarchy doesn't get what God intends for Gay and Lesbian Christians - which is the complete opposite of the unbiblical views emanating from Rome.

It baffles me still that gays and lesbians who were baptized in the RCC continue to seek acceptance from their Church. They need to trust the Truth which God speaks in their hearts and is spoken by others, that God created them in His own image and intends for them full participation in human intimacy and sexuality.

rl, God created Adam and Eve in His image and put them in the garden. He intended for them to full participation in human intimacy and sexuality, but he said "don't eat the fruit from the tree of good and evil." God created them male and female... and He defined how they were to interact. They, like Adam and Eve are free to do as they wish. However, to each situation there are/were consequences to disobedience. Do you know what those consequences were/are?

Reminds me of Alexandr Solzhenitsyn's Harvard address. When those who invited him were disappointed with his remarks about the alleged 'virtues' of [pseudo] democracy and 'free' speech, they engineered a gradual waning of interest in him. And apparently, they were expecting Bishop Soto to bolster their agenda undermining the teachings of the Roman catholic Church the Truth.
As Saint Augustine declared, "What's wrong is still wrong even if everyone's doing it, and what's right is still right even if no one's doing it." That Bishop Soto spoke the truth is commendable of him. But even he didn't it still doesn't make it a not truth.
Remember, when everyone ran away from the Crucified Jesus except Mary, our Blessed Virgin Mother - essentially symbolizing a lone adherence to the Way, the Truth and the Life - the Crucified Truth, is no less than that, still the Truth!
|

I read Solzhenitsyn's major books ... the Gulag series, two or three of them. I don't recall Harvard's best having ever risen to his level. The pages in my memory continue to attempt to present themselves to my eyes, but it takes a lot of chutzpah to allow that text to float up close enough where I can read the words again.

I've never had my aristotelian questions about the anatomy, the design, and "the plumbing / sanitation problems" answered. Mostly because anyone would be embarrassed to consider them. Sure, these misappropriations overplay into sex deviations among heterosexuals also. Industrialism's Doctrine of Interchangeable Parts does not cut & paste into sexual union. But the Bible told us that long ago...and there is a difference between the Ceremonial Law (clothing woven of two fibers) passing away and the Moral Law (Matthew 5) not passing away, not one jot or tittle. If nobody's perfect, then we need to keep instructing ourselves and others. Thank you for saying the truth, Episcopos, from a humble Presbyterian.

I wonder how many of those gleefully trumpeting the good bishop have family members who are gay? I read reams about praying for the bishop. Where is the call to pray for the gays? There is no acknowledgement of the tremendous conflict and anguish that charactizes many of their lives. They don't all live garish life styles; many are exemplary neighbors, colleagues and yes, parents. Christ loves them tenderly. Who can claim to really understand why some people have same-sex orientations? As for perversions, any adult knows that those are common to heterosexuals as well. The tone of the comments from this long list of righteous Catholics is one step removed from lining homosexuals up against a wall and mowing them down with a machine gun.

Wow! You can just feel the love in some of these comments. Luz thanked Bishop Soto for his comments and continued, "I have always believed that these homosexual and lesbian people are demon possessed. These individuals need a full blown exorcism or deliverance." Is that scary or what. I hope this lady doesn't have kids, can you so her beating the gay out of her kids and taking them to an exorcist. It is truly frightening the hatred of some towards the GLBT community. Some may agree with you, Luz, and Bishop Soto is surely glad for your support but this is scary to me. Peace - Mark from PA

...when a very small childs behavior is injurious or could result in death, the loving parent corrects same child. Tears and hurt feelings may result; yet the parent lovingly schools and there by saves the child. Pain related to the gay lovers being told they are sinning is much the same; the parent loves and cares for them very much. And they will be safe.

I heard the story of a man who was beaten almost daily by his father when he told him that he was gay in his teens.. Then he was sent to years of horrific reparative therapy quackery where he contemplated suicide to deal with the self hate. He finally found peace when he realized that God loved him as he was and accepted himself for who he was.

The Church has ministries to people who have had abortions, to alcoholics and gamblers and to prisons full of rapists, child molesters and murderers. But I never hear or read a word of concern about homosexuals from one year to the next, from the pulpit or in the church bulletin. Nothing. These are our sons and daughters who are being treated like throwaways. The church turns a stony face to them and their families. It seems unable to handle the subject, as if it were a far worse thing than any of the crimes listed above. Really? Or is it because of the Church's own shame in this area? Where is Christ in this? Who is going to break through this leaded glass wall and communicate to Catholic gay people the love of Jesus and mother Church? It is demonstrated love that changes hearts, not judgement, which hardens them. I have heard all too many times, "Hate the sin, love the sinner." We do the "hate" part very well, it's difficult to detect the love.

Posted Sunday, October 05, 2008 7:58 PM By Anne T.
Mark, that certainly was not the way for that man to explain to his son that homosexual acts are wrong. But, let's face it, there are some people who will beat their children ungodly if they steal. Neither time are such extreme actions right and must be avoided. Children, too, do experiment when they are small, playing "doctor" , etc., often with both boys and girls. The child should be told in a kind and gentle manner, according to his/her age proper behavior.

Mark from PA: I've heard that story too. It's an urban legend perpetuated by gay rights activists. You need to move beyond the after school specials.
|
Posted Monday, October 06, 2008 10:30 AM By Grisha
Dai Yoshida ~ Let me tell you about a similar situation that isn't an Urban Legend. Briefly my daughter worked in her college admissions office. In one of the files a young girl from Mississippi was applying for financial aid. She said her parents wouldn't contribute anything to the costs of her education. Naturally, the colleges want a lot of evidence that this is truly the case. In the file there was a letter from the county sheriff saying that his deputies had responded numerous times to home, arrested the dad for child beating, made referrals to social services etc. all because the father was outraged that the girl either was, or he thought she was, gay. The teachings of our Church on human sexuality are clear. What is not clear is that they require us to join in a national orgy of hate, hysteria, fear mongering and homophobia.
|

Dai, I heard it from a man who was telling his story. You don't believe that gay kids are beaten and abused? You don't believe that gay kids are forced into reparative therapy by hateful parents? Anne, this guy didn't experiment, he was a virgin until he was 15 and his dad had one of his friends RAPE him to teach him a lesson and show him how bad gay sex was. In my mind homosexuality (the orientation) is not a sin but prejudice and discrimination are.

Thank you to be a prophet and to speak Church's Truth. God bless you!

Our grandparents would be rolling in their graves if they heard us even having this discussion. Love the sinner, but be warned that the Lord of Hosts will soon come from heaven to burn the vineyard of those who will mock righteousness.

Please note, homosexuality is not a sin, it is an orientation. If people hate homosexuality that means they don't like gay people either. It is sad but true. "Love the sinner." A lot of you here are sinners but you sure don't love gay people. This is obvious.

Bishop Soto's teaching reflects the heart and mind of Mother Church. Bishop Soto is a true Shepherd who teaches the truth in love even when it is hard and countercultural. I praise and thank the Lord for bishops of this caliber. Bravo! Bravo!

Mark from PA: I'm sorry your friend was abused. It was suspiciously similar to a widely circulated urban legend. Forgive me if I was mistaken. No, I do not doubt that children are beaten and abused for various ridiculous reasons. I for one do not do the beating and will not condone it. I have friends who define themselves as gay. They know my position and it does not hamper our relationship. Yes, I am a sinner; and yes, I hate the sin, not the sinner. Or, at least I make a great effort at it.

Grisha: If there is a national orgy of hate, hysteria, fear mongering and homophobia, I am not part of it. Perhaps they forgot to send me an invitation.

"Love thy neighbor" words from Our Lord. Loving someone is not wrong, but if your love for another becomes more important than Our Lord God, it then becomes a mortal sin. Thank you Bishop Soto for displaying the most admirable heroic spirit.

Is there a ministry in the Catholic church to people like me, the straight husbands and wives of formerly closeted gay people? Is there a ministry to our children to deal with the bullying, and the identity crisis this causes? What are the resources for healing from living someone else's lie with everyone else's tacit approval?

"Catholic Diocesan Lesbian and Gay Ministries" seems like a contradiction in terms. Am I missing something?

Janet, please do not blame everyone else, but blame your husband for HIS actions and the person or persons with whom he comitted the sodomous acts. Perhaps you can get an annulment. I hope there is a ministry for you.

Janet, the resources and ministry are prayer and forgiveness. We see how sin, the mortal (deadly) sin of homosexual behavior, damages not only the soul practicing such unnatural activities, but those around them too. Janet, your healing will increase when you pray for the one who betrayed you, and ask God's Mercy for them. Jesus said that we must forgive to be forgiven ourselves, and that we are even to pray for our enemies. Pray the Rosary daily, and especially the chaplet of Divine Mercy for the salvation of his soul and his conversion to a properly ordered life. Get your children to pray with you. And you will obtain peace also through Eucharistic Adoration. It *is* a long difficult road, but God never allows suffering beyond your strength to carry your Cross. Consider that God is calling you to be very strong in faith, and therefore to obtain a higher place in Heaven, with this great suffering that you are experiencing.

Thank you, Fr. M.P. for giving Janet such good advice. It was far better than mine.

It saddens me to see people so unwilling to sacrifice for the good of the community. Gay people are just extending what heterosexuals have been failing on for decades. That includes promiscuity, divorce, child pornography, abortion and so many other degrading ways of seeking love. If people just realized how much God loves them, they would be more willing to sacrifice themselves for his body, the church. We have a lot to repent of, whether gay or heterosexual. We need the truth spoken in love, so thank you Bishop Soto. You are a true servant of God.

Dear Bishop Soto,
Thank God for your courage!
I was unhappy with your apology without explanation for the Pope's Regensburg address at "Inside OC" in 2007. The very disrespectful comment of the Muslim representative that the Holy Father did not know how to be pope elicited no response from you. When I heard that you were to be the succesor ot the good Bishop Weigand in Sacramento I was dismayed. But now, I am delighted, you have proved to be a true shepherd! I shall keep you in my prayers.

Thank you, Bishop Soto. It was good that you made your voice heard among people of such fruitless human orientation. They are ready to hear the voice of the world but not that of their conscience. Socrates was not afraid to hear it and to abide by it. How can similar movements label themselves as "Catholic", "Diocesan" and "Ministries" especially when they show to know nothing of their origin, since they stand so far from and opposite to Holy Mother Church? The Church does not invent truth; she simply teaches and recalls to our mind what God has revealed. The world, nay even science, tells them they are lesbian or gay and need not bother. Science offers no remedy when for a headache it normally dispenses an analgesic. God created man and woman, not man and man or woman and woman. Theirs was not intended to be a simple togetherness but a fruitful one even though with possible exceptions. When a person comes and tells me he is gay or she is lesbian, I always ask, "Who told you?" A possible inclination does not "make" the person. Bishop Soto, you are in my prayers and am happy to know that you pout on light for those who want to see it and open their eyes. With closed eyes, they won't see even the sun's. I trust there is nothing offensive in my comment; certainly not in my intention. Thank you. - Albert M.

Bishop Soto spoke the truth, and may G-d reward him for that. (BTW, I'm not a Catholic, but I sure like a lot of what they teach.)

Thank you Bishop Soto for so beautifully expressing what I believe about the sanctity of marriage. I am not of your faith but I want to applaud Bishop Soto's courage in not acquiescing to the pressure to define marriage in relativistic terms.

Is it too much to hope that someone in the audience learned something from the Bishop's instruction? American needs more courageous leaders like him who are willing to tell the truth and risk "political incorrectness". Thank you, Father, for your example.

In clicking links, I found this uplifting and encouraging synopsis about Bishop Soto. I'm a Mormon, whose faith is currently being vilified for standing up to the immorality of same sex behavior. I am so glad that this Catholic bishop spoke up courageously about Christ's teachings. Marriage was instituted to fulfill the measure of the earth's creation, the creation of children being the bottom line. They are the most important issue in this whole thing. I say, thank you, Bishop Soto, for speaking up for the truth.

I too am a Mormon and am filled with respect and admiration for Bishop Soto. Like the Roman Catholic Church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches that marriage is a holy sacrament and that inn sexual relations outside of marriage lies the sin, rather than same-sex attraction, In other words, whether we indulge in our most primal urges or strive to draw closer to God by putting off the natural man. Feeling persecuted for my religion as I am at the moment, I thank Bishop Soto for this great feeling of solidarity with our friends of the Catholic Church he creates with his courageous stance.

Bishop Jaime Soto's remarks were totally appropriate and right of target. I am offended that the gay and lesbian movement feel it is their right to promote their life style as somethinhg wholesome and worthy of our commendation,..

I am LDS, and I am gay! I want to thank my catholic brothers and sisters, especially Bishop Soto! It took a lot of courage to get up and say what you did in front of those that were there! I agree with you whole-heartedly! Thank you for being a strong person of faith and devotion to our Lord and God! I too have been very offended by the Gay Movement agenda! They look for rights for themselves, but attempt to take away that which is most sacred to MILLIONS AND BILLIONS of people!! God bless you and those that are fighting for truth and righteousness! We will prevail..."They that be with us, are more than they that be with them!"

Thank you, Cinaed67, for your e-mail. No one that I know of on this blog wants to see people with homosexual temptations injured or killed. We just cannot condone behavior that leads to injury of the body, diseases and the destruction of family life. Thank you again for your post to Bishop Soto. God bless you.
