Sen. Barbara Boxer holds up resolution welcoming Benedict XVI because of objections to pro-life content
U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-California, temporarily blocked approval of a resolution welcoming Pope Benedict XVI to the U.S. because she disapproved of a passage referring to the pope’s respect “for each and every human life,” the online political journal Politico reports.
Boxer and other Democrats objected because they saw the phrase as a reference to abortion. “Three Senate Republican aides involved in the issue say that Boxer objected to the ‘life’ language, which Democrats see as an implicit reference to the Catholic church's opposition to abortion,” said Politico. “Senate Democratic leadership offices declined to comment but referred questions to Boxer's office.”
Boxer spokeswoman Natalie Ravitz told Politico in an email message after the controversy was resolved, "We are very pleased we were able to reach an agreement with Senator Brownback to remove the political language and pass this resolution welcoming Pope Benedict."
The resolution welcoming the pope later passed the Senate on a voice vote, but only after its sponsor, Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kansas, agreed to remove any reference to "human life." Politico reported that Brownback, “a devout Catholic,” agreed to drop the language because he “did not want a high profile fight over the resolution.”
In fact, reported Politico, the Kansas senator, while attending a papal Mass at Nationals Park, used a hand-held messaging device to communicate to his staff that it was ok to delete the language to which Boxer and other Democrats objected.
"There was some politics involved here, and the objectionable language has been withdrawn," a senior Democratic Senate aide told Politico.
This is the language to which Boxer objected and which was later removed from the resolution at her insistence: "Pope Benedict XVI has spoken out for the weak and vulnerable, witnessing to the value of each and every human life."

I love these politicians with their agendas. I wonder if it was a welcoming message for the PM of Israel if she would object to a statement encouraging the political aspirations of all including Palestinians. Fat chance! Take it where it comes from.

Sen. Boxer is being honest. The concern of the left is not to cherish and protect "each and every human life", but to promote elective abortion, regardless of whether it violates anyone's right to life. She quite overtly reflected that concern, and quite correctly sees the Pope as a threat to it. The left holds the Marxist view that if it is necessary to trample on someone's rights to promote the utopia they dreamed up, then trample on them. The idea of protecting "each and every human life" must be abandoned in order to bring about the new order when everyone will be happily enjoying the blessings of free sex.

How embarrassing to be a constituent of a Senator that speaks ONLY for herself and NOT her constituents, and a politico who is suitable only for hanging, to be followed by being drawn and quartered, of course. Sad times, these.

Would anyone want to belong to a church that does not value each and every human life? Everyone wants to be valued and thought of as being worthwhile. The Pope is the spokesperson here on earth for our God and Creator who made us in the image and likeness of Himself (even Barbara Boxer) so it is sad that they can't greet him with the respect he deserves. Too bad their hearts have been hardened. St. Barbara pray for us. Our Lady of the Americas, Pray for us!

Sen Brownback doesn't seem to want a high profile fight over anything Catholic ... which is probably why he is allowed to continue in office. Let him dig in and fight a little bit like the former rep, Bob Dornan, and the GOP will take his head off fast.

I think Brownback really made her look bad by handling it the way that he did. And that's a good thing.
On another topic - aren't you so proud of our President in his treatment of OUR POPE? No one else currently running for President would do that. Meeting him at the airplane, and the amazing ceremony on the White House lawn. Thank you Mr. President!

I wonder why Brownback caved-in so quickly to the culture of death? Having a political debate in a high profile setting would be a good way to show what those like Boxer believe.

I guess barbara will have us now reject the Declaration of Independence because of its reference to respect for "life" etc.

This is a Senator that tells us legislation has to be passed because it is for the "CHILDREN."
Democrats will help the child after they pass the gauntlet of abortion. In effect' they say we approve you being killed but live and we will help you.
Pathetic!!!

If the wicked witch of the West does not want to represent all the people in her district, I suggest she resign from her Senate seat and allow someone with a bit more class to take her seat in the Senate.

I'm more ashamed of Brownback than anything else. Why, oh why, did he wimp out? At least Boxer stood for her principles, warped though they may be. This is why the GOP is the "stupid party". This lack of spine on the part of the GOP is a large reason why Terri Schiavo was murdered - even though the GOP dominated both houses of the Florida and Federal legislatures, and had Republican executives to boot. It's time for people of principle to stop being "nice" and actually act like adults with conviction.

Congress people are put in office by their parties, not by voters. Odd, huh? Voters are manipulated through media, which has learned over the decades how to do it. I talk with many people and not many demonstrate any notion of how to think or reason any issue out. All they do is reiterate and/or adjust the TV sound bites they are addicted to. They are slaves, and there are more of them than there are people who actually deploy reason.

The GOP does not lack spine; rather that wing of the government party lacks morals. You need to understand that Brownback's only ... only ... option for remaining a senator is to do what he is told by party bosses. It has nothing to do with voters, whether he stays in office. The only power a Catholic in politics has is prayer ... and perhaps Brownback is the only actual Catholic left in Congress ... as far as I know, he has not actually repudiated his faith. But if he steps it up a little, they'll get rid of him. Evidently he is the best that Catholicism with Her billion plus adherents can do. Not that there is any problem with him, but with those supposed Catholic voters who can no longer tell right from wrong, and are enslaved to the media ... their religion is the media, the dope instead of the Pope.

i am ashamed to have barbra boxer representing me year after year. not that i vote for her. shame on her. as for brownback, shame on you for not standing up to your so called convictions. better that the pope know the truth, that this country does cave into social pressures and not stand up for the TRUTH, which JESUS so clearly taught us.

How horribly shameful, that valuing life is viewed as a political position. Pope Benedict HAS "spoken out for the weak and vulnerable, witnessing to the value of each and every human life." To delete that truth is another instance of the shameful way Catholics are treated in this country, and the shameful way they allow themselves to be treated. SPEAK UP FOR LIFE IN ALL FORMS! VALUE ALL LIFE--even this misguided senator's.

Boxer would have prospered with the socialist Nazi Party of Germany in the 1930's and 40's, perhaps she would have been one of Hitler's top right-hand women. Perhaps National Director of the Death Camps.
Pray that Californian's will fire her. Pray that in her next election run, the bogus system that has successfully elected her in the past contrary to real popular vote, won't be rigged for her to win again.
May God forgive her and all of us, as none of us are undefiled. We all need God's sanctifying grace.

Dear Editor, I would like to read an honest article on what BXVIth said to the American Bishops behind their closed doors. Do you think you could provide a report to your readers? Publicly these Bishops undeniably support BXVIth, but visibly and statistically look how they really support him! Recent US newspaper articles have stated that nearly 1/4 of all Americans are Catholic, that is approximately 75 million Catholics! If just 1% of them preferred to regularly attend the extra-ordinary Tridentine Latin Mass (that is not unrealistic considering the large baby-boomer generation was raised before Vatican II) then 750 thousand American Catholics would be going to Sunday morning TLMs weekly. My guess is the American Bishops have not permitted anywhere close, enough TLMs in this country to satisfy those good catholics that are hungry for the TLM and the 7 Holy Sacraments. What say you? Pray that God's Will be done, just like in Our Lord's Prayer, not our own will be done. May God forgive us and continue to bless America.

Given the Boxer position where were the Democratic candidates. I am surprised they had nothing to say. Oh I forgot, the Democrats don't consider the human life within a mothers womb as human.
It is truly sad.
