Phone call from the archbishop
Niederauer tells pastor to remove thank-you note in parish bulletin received from member of Catholic-mocking transvestite nuns
San Francisco Archbishop George Niederauer has asked Most Holy Redeemer church to remove from the web site edition of its parish bulletin a thank-you letter from a member of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a homosexual group whose members dress in drag as nuns.
The archbishop made the request on Oct. 15, a day after the letter appeared in the weekly parish bulletin. The letter has since been removed. The letter was published in the parish bulletin just three days after Niederauer publicly apologized for his “mistake” in giving communion to two Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence at a Mass celebrated at Most Holy Redeemer on Oct. 7. In his letter, Niederauer said he noticed “two strangely dressed persons” at the end of the communion line. He said he did not “recognize either of them as wearing mock religious garb.” Only later, he said, did he learn they were members of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.
The archbishop’s letter of apology also included some harsh words for the group: “Someone who dresses in a mock religious habit to attend Mass does so to make a point. If people dress in a manner clearly intended to mock what we hold sacred, they place themselves in an objective situation in which it is not appropriate for them to receive Holy Communion, much less for a minister of the Church to give the Sacrament to them.” The statement concluded, “I must apologize.”
Most Holy Redeemer’s Oct. 14 parish bulletin carried a thank-you note from “Delta Goodhand,” a Perpetual Indulgence “sister,” in which he thanked the congregation for the welcome he felt at the archbishop’s Mass. “Afterwards, one of the parishioners offered us a blue ‘MHRC: An Inclusive Catholic Church’ pin that I was proud to wear through the Castro Fair. You are a wonderfully inclusive church!” wrote Goodhand.
Archdiocesan spokesman Maurice Healy told California Catholic Daily in an e-mail message yesterday that he became aware of the letter in the bulletin on the Most Holy Redeemer web site on Oct. 15. Healy said he “felt the letter was a mistake and counter to the Archbishop’s apology statement.”
The same day, Healy said, he called the parish, “and was told the parish council had received the letter and thought it would be a good idea to publish it.” On the afternoon of Oct. 15, he brought it to Niederauer’s attention, who, said Healy, “phoned the pastor, who agreed that the letter should be removed from the web site.”
Asked what the archbishop's reason was for requesting that the letter be removed, Healy said he did not know, but that as soon as Niederauer learned of the letter, he phoned the pastor.
The pastor, Father Stephen Merriwether, in an interview published by Catholic News Service, said the incident "has been blown way out of proportion.”
The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, who describe themselves as the “leading-edge order of queer nuns" and whose slogan is “go and sin some more,” issued their own statement about the controversy yesterday. The statement, written by “Sister Edith Myflesh, Current Abbess,” took aim not at the transvestite nuns taking communion in drag, but at those who recorded the event and the media outlets that reported it.
The statement said, in part: “These professional muckrakers then gave the photos to an anti-gay Fundamentalist Catholic Website which in turn sent them to right-wing media outlets who willfully distorted the facts for political gain.
“The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are appalled that some media outlets have unwittingly spread these distortions while others have intentionally taken advantage to fuel a mean-spirited and divisive political agenda.
“These forces have been critical of Most Holy Redeemer for their welcoming approach to the diverse community they serve and have frequently seen fit to attack the parishioners as part of a larger campaign against ‘San Francisco values.’
“Our hearts go out to the parishioners of Most Holy Redeemer and to the Archbishop who have been unfairly stigmatized by these disingenuous campaigns for doing nothing more than following the welcoming teachings of Christ and administering Communion in keeping with the teachings of the Second Vatican Council.”

Enough already with these perverts we want Bishops with guts and the will to put an end to this continuing anti-Catholic rants and ravings!!! Why is it that perverts and other anti-Catholic groups can do as they please and get what they want? But God forbid if we ask for the Traditional Latin Mass we are called schismatics, trouble makers, right wing nuts, etc???? Its time for real Roman Catholics to stand up to these weak men who dress like Bishops but don't act like a real Bishop should and teach the HOLY CATHOLIC FAITH!!!!!!!

It is over and done with. What else can the Archbishop do now. We are greatful that the Archbishop made an apology and is now fully aware of these groups that mock our faith. May our Lord bless him with His graces and may he grow more in virtues that will help, guide and give him courage to lead this diocese. Though this scandal was so hurtful for our Church, we can move on in humility and trust in our Lord to help His people continue the good fight and to be more alert. Pride is the root of all evil, lets learn from these misfortunate events and remember that the devil is looking for ways to shake and bring scandal to the church, but with humility and love of Christ, we can overcome what is ahead. God bless us! Sacred heart of Jesus save us and protect us. We accept your apology Archbishop and forgive us if we spoke words out of pride and anger against this Archbishop, it is only because we are brused from these sort of abuses. We love Jesus and His church!

It would seem the next logical step would be for the Archbishop to instruct his priests, especially those in service at Most Holy Redeemer, to deny Holy Communion to anyone dressed in outlandish garb. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is not a halloween party. The "spirit" of Vatican II will be the ruination of our Church.

I don't think Thomas Miles has his head screwed on right when he says the CCD mission statement comes from Vatican II. Just look at the date -- June 4, 2000, Jubilee of Journalists. And when was Vatican II?

Archbishop Niederauer is not worthy of his office. He can apologize until he is blue in the face and not one thing will be changed. He knew what went on at that church. He knows that Most Holy Redeemer (MHR) is a "flamer" church. He knows that the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence is not just a group that "mocks the church". If the Archbishop went to MHR to see for himself how bad things were, then why in heaven would he give HOLY Communion to those two sodomites? It is incomprehensible. But since he did this vile sacrilege to the Body of Christ, he should pay the penalty - and it should come from Pope Benedict XVI, the only earthly person to whom he is responsible. Thank God for the individuals who recorded this event. It took great courage to expose this deed. To those who criticize this effort I quote from St. Augustine: (1) "It is better that the truth be known, rather than that scandal be covered up". (2) "If the faith is in peril, prelates ought to be accused by their subject even in public".

I do not live in San Francisco, but when I came to live in the Bay Area thirty years ago, one of the first things I learned from the media is the group "Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence" as being transvestites in "habits". For the Archbishop to not know who these people are is obsurd. Everyone who lives in San Fran, as well as the Bay Area, have heard/seen these people. Even if he actually did not know, those who are dressed this way have no good reason for receiving our Precious Lord. How Our Lord must cry at such disrespect. Disrespect that the archbishop allows. To remove the thank you letter from the bulletin is an attempt to deflect attention away from his indiscretion of allowing communion to people who obviously were trying to make a point, and not a good one!

How sad that these people have to display thier feelings in such a way that is disrepectful to God.
I believe it is for thier " FREE PRESS ATTENTION". Furthermore, thier actions are the work of evil and we all know satan presents itself in different ways. My advice is to stay away from any of this kind of behavior.

Dear Reader, You are correct, what I should have stated was that the mission statement is based on Vatican Two, however, that does not mean that my head is not "screwed on right". Reader, have the courage to let us know your first name, I know that your head is "screwed on right" because from your e-mail it sounds like you have never made a mistake and that his why you can afford to make a derogatory comment with regard to my mental state!! For the record, I DO MAKE MISTAKES AND I DO SIN AND THAT IS WHY I NEED THE LORD JESUS CHRIST AND HIS CHURCH IN MY LIFE!!!!

Laurette Elsberry you made very good points too. You are right. I just can't speak for the Archbishop because I don't know him personally not his intentions but only by these articles we read. Only our Lord knows his true weak ways. Pretty much the faithful is saying that we need true Godly leadership whom practice gifts of the Holy Ghost. Would be nice to see more strong convictions in Christ and His church. Lets keep praying.

The Redeemer church episode is just one more piece in a long list of crazy events bringing dishonor to a once great city. Clearly, the inmates have taken over the asylum.

This event is part of a long history of abuse at Most Holy Redeemer. An absolutely superb priest of the Archdiocese was asked to be pastor at MHR about four years ago. When this priest told Bishop Wester that he'd go there, but would teach what the Church teaches about homosexuality, he was never contacted again. This priest contacted Wester as the time for changes was approaching in order to know if he was going there or not. He needed to make preparations. Wester's reply was that he had basically excluded himself from this Parish by his insistence to adhere to the Church's Teaching on Homosex. If you will notice, the Archdiocese carefully addressed only the "garb" or "mocking " issue, not the homosexual issue. The gay men kissing and holding hands there is mocking Almighty God as is Meriwether's blessing these folks prior to their participation in the Homo "Parade". These events are OK by the Archdiocese. All this is the result of nearly thirty years of failure by the Archdiocese (Quinn,Leveda and Brokeback) to teach firmly, honestly, charitably and lovingly that this lifestyle is inconsistent with God's Law.

What's wrong with the clergy these days? The Archbishop
should be suspended (apology or not) This awful happening at Mass is one of the "fruits" of Vatican II...the casual,
disrespectful attitude of these sodomites and others who know nothing about what the Mass is!

Just a quick hello from Canada. I have been following the siuation at Holy Redeemer in San Francisco. I have given a lot of thought and prayer to the situation that is now upon us with that being many Bishops who refuse to stand their ground. Two great Bishops that I greatly admire from the USA are Bishops Burke and Chaput. Many of the others have been comprimised so we need to pray for them for they are in grave danger. God Bless.

I completely agree with Laurette. Niederauer is not at all worthy of his office. San Francisco is way too big for him to handle.

this is insane. as catholics, we can forgive men of the cloth for actually being "perverts" by SEXUALLY ABUSING CHILDREN, yet we condemn those who simply want to take part in sharing communion with a parish that caters mainly to the homosexual community (seeing that it is in the castro district). if any of you actually stepped outside of your box and opened your eyes and hearts enough to learn anything about The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, you would understand that they're intention is not to mock anyone, but to bring joy and enlightenment to EVERYONE. also, i didn't realize that there was a dress code at mass. i mean everyone hated Jesus at one point, and look what he did...
you all need to grow up, and realize that God doesn't hate or care what you wear, who you are, or who you love, so you shouldn't either.
but then again, what do i know. i'm just another homocatholic.
peace and love.
