Report Details Harassment

After Prop. 8 Passage

Sacramento, Calif., Nov 3 (CNA).- A think tank has compiled and analyzed reports of the harassment, intimidation, and “gross expressions of anti-religious bigotry” shown in reaction to the successful passage of Proposition 8. If partisans of marriage redefinition continue to increase in power, the analysis warns, those who seek the preservation of marriage as a union of man and wife may risk paying a price legally, socially and economically.

The Heritage Foundation’s Oct. 22 report “The Price of Prop 8,” authored by researcher Thomas M. Messner, said that many individuals and institutions who defend the nature of marriage as a union between a man and a woman have paid a “heavy price.”

Militant opponents of Prop. 8 targeted supporters with a range of hostility, including “harassment, intimidation, vandalism, racial scapegoating, blacklisting, loss of employment, economic hardships, angry protests, violence, at least one death threat, and gross expressions of anti-religious bigotry,” the report stated.

Vandalism included a brick thrown through the window of an elderly couple who put a “Yes on 8” sign in their lawn. Another senior citizen with a pro-Prop. 8 bumper sticker had her car’s rear window smashed.

A statue of the Virgin Mary outside one church was vandalized with orange paint. Swastikas and other graffiti were scrawled on the walls of Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in San Francisco. At Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Riverside, signs were twisted into the shape of a swastika.

A heavy object wrapped with a “Yes on 8” sign was used to smash the window of a pastor’s office at Messiah Lutheran Church in Downey.

Sign theft targeting Prop. 8 supporters was significant, with one source estimating about one-third of the 25,000 signs distributed were stolen or vandalized before the end of the campaign.

Phone calls, e-mails and mailings also targeted supporters of Prop. 8. The messages made accusation of bigotry and used vulgar language. One e-mail threatened to contact the parents of students at a school where a particular Prop. 8 supporter worked.

One individual supporter was the subject of a flier distributed in his town. The flier included his photo and name and the amount of his donation to the pro-Prop. 8 campaign. It labeled him as a “bigot” and reported his association with a particular Catholic church.

Increased support for Prop. 8 among African Americans and members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, known as Mormons, also resulted in their communities being targeted.

Racial epithets were used at anti-Prop. 8 protests, while Joe Solmonese, head of the Human Rights Campaign, targeted the Mormons.

On the Dr. Phil show, responding to a Mormon questioner, he replied: “We are going to go after your church every day for the next two years unless and until Prop 8 is overturned.”

An anti-Prop. 8 advertisement depicted two Mormon missionaries invading the home of a lesbian couple, ransacking their belongings and tearing up their marriage license.

“Anti-Mormon malice reached a new level when someone mailed packages containing suspicious white powder to Mormon temples in California and Utah,” Messner said.

Jose Nunez, a new U.S. citizen, was waiting to distribute signs outside his Catholic church when a man grabbed several signs and fled. He pursued the thief, who reportedly yelled “What do you have against gays?” and punched him in the face.

Nunez suffered a bloody eye and wounds to his face and required 16 stitches under his eye.

Employees of businesses were targeted by some protesters. Some employees resigned, while others took leaves of absence. Some business owners lost business because they had donated to support Prop. 8.

While deeming boycotts a “time-honored form of activism,” the Heritage Foundation’s report commented: “No individual should be compelled to choose between making a living and participating in democratic processes affecting fundamental matters of public concern, such as marriage.”

California law requiring the disclosure of personal information of individuals who donate $100 or more to a ballot measure campaign have made such displays of hostility easier, the report said. Several websites were designed to use the information to identify and target Prop. 8 supporters.

While acknowledging that many Prop. 8 opponents have rejected such abuses, Messner argues that the ideology underlying the outrage is a cause of hostility.

“Arguments for same-sex marriage, although often couched in terms of tolerance and inclusion, are based fundamentally on the idea that limiting marriage to the union of husband and wife is a form of bigotry, irrational prejudice, and even hatred against homosexual persons who want the state to license their relationships. As this ideology seeps into the culture, belief in marriage as the union of husband and wife will likely come to be viewed as an unacceptable form of discrimination that should be purged from society through legal, cultural, and economic pressure.”

“Individuals or institutions that publicly defend marriage as the union of husband and wife risk harassment, reprisal, and intimidation—at least some of it targeted and coordinated,” Messner continued.

What does this say about the character of those that support gay marriage? Wait...The pro-death groups try to make it sound as if all pro-lifers are murders. There is obviously direct support for criminal behavior from leading gay groups. Pretty sick behavior from people that claim to only want peace and to be left alone...

Big suprise, scratch the surface of a "progressive" and you will find a fascist. If these sodomites can do this when they lose imagine what they will do if they win. Face it people the entire secular left including the majoirty of sodomites want the Church destroyed (if they cant change it) and faithful Catholics dead. Since they cannot legally put us to death (yet) they mock and attack what we hold sacred, this has been the historical pattern of the Church's enemies. Be prepared to martyred at the hands of the state in the name of tolerance. I am certain the "good" liberals like Grisha and Mark from PA will disagree, but I know I am right and preparing and hoping for conflict with these satanic forces. Lets see if the editors will print this

And the problem is?

Posted Wednesday, November 04, 2009 6:54 AM By ted
I hope nobody is surprised by this. This is the world being built by those who cry out for "tolerance" but refuse to adopt tolerant attitudes toward those who dare to disagree with them.

.....and right after Prop. 8 passed, a woman in the East Bay was raped because she was a lesbian and in NYC a straight man was murdered by attackers yelling homophobic slurs because the suspects saw him walking arm in arm with his brother. Currently the Georgetown University Police are investigating a two assaults on women wearing pro gay t-shirts who were asked "Are you a Homo?" before being beaten. The victim of the Richmond High Rape made a statement through her pastor at a rally my daughter took some of her students to yesterday. In it she said "Violence is never the answer." She is right.

Canisius: Well the editors did print it. How are you "preparing and hoping for conflict with these satanic forces." you see coming? Are you stockpiling weapons and ammunition? Do you foresee your house and family under siege from gay activists? If this is what you mean by your last post, I'd seriously suggest you talk to your priest about your fears.

Ted - Who in their right mind would tolerate those who would oppress them? Clearly you fail to understand the true meaning of tolerance. If one of "those" came to the steps of your church with protest signs and started handing out pamphlets denouncing Christ and suggesting people turn from Christianity, you wouldn't tolerate that for a second. And none of "those" would EXPECT you to tolerate something like that. Similarly, "those who cry out for tolerance" will not tolerate you figuratively coming into their families and bedrooms and telling them how to live their lives. Have your beliefs - but tolerance on their part doesn't mean conforming to your beliefs and allowing you to run their lives through public policy and law. That is a ridiculous definition of "tolerance" on your part. I don't see devout Catholics "tolerating" abortion; why would you expect any less of "those".

Tolerance...yeah right.

Well said, Canisius. I've got your back and we take comfort in Jesus' promise that the gates of hell will not prevail against us when we storm it.

"But if I be asked what sign we may look for to show that the advance of the Faith is at hand I would answer by a word the modern world has forgotten: Persecution. When that shall once more be at work, it will be morning." -- Hilaire Belloc Good Morning!

Yes, the battle is great! But God is our leader and the battle has already be with Jesus Christ on the cross!! Yes, many may be called to martyrdom but Christ. Some just to fight with Jesus by our side. Much prayer is needed! +JMJ+

When is somebody going to publish the names and addresses of everyone who SUPPORTED Gay Marriage in California to the tune of $100 or more? We need to start peacefully protesting in front of their places of business! Now that people realize their children are going to be indoctrinated that perverted sex is just another lifestyle they are pushing back. If "gay" marriage ever becomes legal it will be promoted in schools from kindergarten onward.

I too had my pro prop 8 sign taken off my lawn as i was walking out to work, the young lady tried to prove a point w her friends but i gently picked it up and placed it back on my lawn "We all have the right to free speech" is all i said. The sign was pulled down two more times throughout the month till it was finally gone...

Peter, Your definition of "opress" evidently includes those who simply disagree with you. It's completely within the realm of reason to define Marriage in traditional terms and insist it not be corrupted by changing that definition to attempt to make perversion somehow legitimate.

Posted Wednesday, November 04, 2009 3:31 PM By Mark from PA
Yes, Grisha, thank you for sharing that, violence is never the answer. If all people could treat others with respect and consideration, the world would be a much better place.

The solution is simple: next time there's a similar campaign for morality, decency and normalcy, don't write a personal check. Get a postal (or other type of) money order, fill in any name you like, and send it to the campaign headquarters. That way the sodo-fascists won't be able to target you.

Hmmm! This reminds me of the boycott against Disney that I participated in back in the 90's because of it's gay-friendly promotions.

Those who donate for marriage defense should forgo the tax deduction and give cash with disclosing their names ... now what basis would the govt have in outlawing this? If they have such a law, then test it until it is thrown out. You cannot serve God and money both. Give up the tax deduction when it interferes with serving God.

This is simply and purely fascism. It is easy to say, but there is often legal recourse and remedies that should be pursued in the case of any loss of job, violence (or threat of violence), and the like. This is much like the development of codes of conduct and speech on universities around the State. Virtually all of these, when challenged, have fallen. Next, affected people need to bring individual legal actions, demanding money damages, against those that do these things. What a shame, but not unexpected, and this will be even more so after the vote in Maine.

David @ 11/4 10:23 AM: BINGO! The greatest change in the last few years, I think, is the open recognition of a profound division in the Church, in the nation, one which is irreducible because it proceeds from First Principles. The Catholic Faith cannot be, ever, made acceptable to gay marriage or abortion advocates. They have tried and tried and tried for decades to inflitrate, influence, cajole, lobby, intimidate, threaten, and now, yes- persecute. As Christ promiased us, they have failed. The Church can and will show mercy to the victims of the horrible, satanic evil of abortion, and the horrible, satanic evil of sodomy. But the Church will never, can never, ever change her proclamation of the Truth: Abortion is murder. Homosexual acts are gravely evil. God will judge.

Violence is not infrequently the answer. Anyone who has read sufficient Scripture has read where God sometimes sends violence ... as the cure for a problem. Even Jesus sent a herd of pigs with demons into the lake to drown ... a very violent action.

Posted Sunday, November 08, 2009 10:48 PM By Abeca Christian
This violence is so disturbing. I definitely know that these individuals truly need help.

Ted - "Your definition of "opress" evidently includes those who simply disagree with you." No Ted, clearly it doesn't. As I wrote, have your beliefs. Just keep them out of public policy and law.

Posted Monday, November 09, 2009 9:57 AM By Grisha
JLS - Please excuse my ignorance of the Gospels but could you share chapter & verse on the pigs. I can't help but wonder what a herd of pigs were doing in the land of Israel anyway.

Tom P and JLS, I once went to get a money order for such a donation, and the bank was going to charge me too much. A customer in the bank, as I was complaining about the charge but ready to purchase it anyway, leaned over to me and told me that I could get a money order around the corner at a store for far less than the bank wanted to charge. I went over there and got it. The Lord truly works in mysteries ways His wonders to perform.
