“Approximately 270,000 cars a day”
Walk for Life billboard goes up near entrance to San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, hundreds of thousands expected to see “Abortion Hurts Women” message
News release from Walk for Life West Coast
SAN FRANCISCO, January 2, 2009 -- A billboard advertising the Walk for Life West Coast’s signature slogan “Abortion Hurts Women” is now displayed near the approach to one of the most traveled bridges in the U.S.
The San Francisco Walk, which drew 25,000 people last year, will be held this year on Saturday, January 24.
The 20-foot by 60-foot billboard is easily visible to the more than 100,000 cars driving the freeway daily on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge approach and includes a phone number for a post abortion help line.
The help line is staffed by women who have themselves experienced abortion, explained Walk for Life co-chair Eva Muntean.
The billboard went up December 31.
“San Francisco is a beautiful city but there is a lot of sadness beneath the surface -- until recently we had more abortions than live births, and a high percentage of our population has experienced abortion,” Ms. Muntean said. “We need to reach those women (and men) who are hurting, and this seemed like the most effective method.”
The billboard is located at Fourth and Bryant streets in San Francisco. The Bay Bridge carries approximately 270,000 cars a day, according to state Department of Transportation statistics.
Walk for Life West Coast was founded in 2005 and drew 8,000 people the first year. Each year the turnout has grown, and it draws walkers from along the Western Seaboard and from as far east as Florida and New York.

How about a billboard that tells the real story: Abortion Kills Babies. Better yet: Abortion is MURDER.

Anyone who has ever had a pro-life bumper sticker on their car understands the importance of this huge sign. How many times have you experienced a hateful and glaring face, thinking that you were driving too slow or fast?...Then you remember your bumper sticker! My son once had a woman get out of her car at a stop sign and start to scream, "Who made you God?" A few days ago we talked about carefully chosen words. This large sign placed at the entrance of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge is compassionately calling out to everyone who drives by. This sign has a phone number and asks people if they are hurting. This will cause a "tidal wave" of good and evil emotions as people drive by. Some bumper stickers just say abortion is murder. While I prefer the messages that show compassion and a direction for the hurting, sometimes the simple and truthful words "Abortion is Murder" are necessary. The reason that I know this, is that a woman who had left the Catholic faith, but has since returned to Catholicism after her abortion, said that she was in denial about the heinous act she had committed. When she did tell others in her evangelical church about her abortion they never seemed to care that much. They listened nicely. They told her that God would forgive her which is very true. She said that it was not until a wise Catholic priest who balanced the truth with compassion regarding her decision did she ultimately realize and accept what she had done. She said that this priest was the "very first person" who actually displayed the proper outrage for what she had done. This was done in a confessional. He did not terrify her, he enlightened her with significant truth and reality and followed with the ultimate reminder of God's unfathomable ocean of Mercy. Let us hope and pray that this sign opens up a Saint Faustina- like torrent of desire for God's forgiveness and healing. How many other particular types of sin billboards are going to be needed before we all repent?

"...until recently we had more abortions than live births, and a high percentage of our population has experienced abortion." What a sad fact.

And, we will keep on coming until abortion becomes unthinkable in this land.

It is unbelievable that a place could have more abortions than live births. I have read that this is true in Russia also. Today Russia loses more than a half a million people each year (the population of the country is going down) due to abortion. Abortion is widely used as birth control there and many women as young as 30 are permanently sterile because their bodies have been so violated and damaged by several abortions. How true that abortion hurts women, not only physically but emotionally and spiritually. Eileen, I do commend you for your work for life and for the lives that you have saved.

Confronting many, many people with Pro-life and Catholic truth can be done with very, very little money. We do not need a large advertising budget to turn public opinion. We've a got a huge labor pool. Let's put them to work making clever signs and putting them up on fences and over freeways all over our cities.

That's almost as much traffic as passes by the Veterans Building on Wilshire Blvd near UCLA ... think it was 300,000 but that was 25 years ago when cars were bigger, so maybe with smaller cars there is more traffic now. Also, there was about 300,000 commuters who poured into D.C. each day in the same era.
