Tiller resolution blocked in U.S. Senate

California’s Barbara Boxer at forefront of standoff that led to measure’s downfall

California Sen. Barbara Boxer was among three main sponsors of a resolution in the U.S. Senate last week that would have added the term “reproductive health care” to a similar measure adopted unanimously in the U.S. House of Representatives earlier this month lamenting the slaying of late-term abortionist George Tiller.

Boxer joined with Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire and Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota – all Democrats – in an attempt to add language to the House-passed resolution that drew strenuous opposition from pro-life lawmakers and ultimately resulted in the Senate passing no resolution on the Tiller matter.

The House resolution – HR 505 – was adopted June 9 by a vote of 423-0. HR 505 lamented Tiller’s killing in “his place of worship,” offered the House’s condolences to the Tiller family and condemned a growing trend of slayings at churches and synagogues. Notably absent from the House resolution was any mention of what Tiller did for a living or any mention of abortion-related violence of any kind.

When the issue reached the Senate, Boxer, Shaheen and Klobuchar introduced a measure that went well beyond the House version, making the issue of “reproductive health care” for women and “violence against providers of reproductive health care” central to the resolution. Pro-lifers in the Senate objected, noting that “reproductive health care” is a code word for abortion and that, as written, the Senate resolution would have the effect of praising abortion and glorifying abortion providers.

Sponsors of the measure in the Senate were told that, if they would remove all “reproductive health care” references from the resolution and provide language similar to the one adopted in the House, pro-life senators would likely vote for it. But Boxer, Shaheen and Klobuchar refused – and it became quickly apparent their proposed resolution would not get the unanimous vote they were seeking. According to the Minnesota Independent, on June 18 “an anonymous Republican senator moved to use the rarely seen ‘secret hold,’ preventing it from coming to a vote.” Such ‘secret holds’ are permitted under Standing Senate Rules and allow a senator or group of senators to anonymously stop a motion from reaching a floor vote.

The measure’s failure prompted Shaheen’s press office to issue a news release entitled, “Shaheen, Boxer, Klobuchar denounce obstruction of resolution condemning violence against women’s health care providers.” The June 18 release summarized what had happened this way: “Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed a resolution condemning violence in places of worship. Shaheen, Boxer and Klobuchar were asked to adopt the House language in the Senate, but decided to move forward with their resolution, as they feel condemning violence against women's health care providers and agreeing not to use violence as a means of resolving differences are not objectionable viewpoints.”

Instead, said the release, “The resolution faced objection by some colleagues on the other side of the aisle, and the Senators were urged to eliminate references to women's reproductive health care in order to unanimously pass the resolution.”

"I realize that the issue of reproductive choice is divisive and that there are many heartfelt feelings on both sides of the aisle," said Shaheen in the release. "However, I was hopeful that, regardless of our differences of opinion on this sensitive issue, the Senate could come together and pass a resolution that rejects the use of violence against women's health care providers. It is a sad day when the elected leaders of the greatest Democracy on earth can't agree to protect those exercising their constitutional rights."

Boxer was quoted in the release as saying, "Everyone has the right to work for changes in the law, but there is no place for violence in any of our debates. To assault a health care worker, a patient or anyone else because of a disagreement about an issue, regardless of how contentious, brings all of humanity down into a dark pit of violence."

California’s other senator, Dianne Feinstein, was also listed as a co-sponsor of the resolution, but apparently played no major role in the language confrontation that led to its apparent demise.

Tiller was shot and killed on May 31 while serving as an usher at Reformation Lutheran Church in Wichita, Kansas. Every major pro-life organization in the U.S. condemned the slaying immediately and denounced any use of violence in efforts to save the unborn.

'reproductive health care....." you mean, the legalisation of mass murder? ..... and giving it a euphimistic name which fools some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time but NEVER all of the people all of the time. The world is coming to a slow realisation that, like slavery, legalised evil horror, is still evil horror. Practictioners can be prayed for but never congratulated or lauded.

With all of the urgent matters that need the attention of the legislative branch of government, why are they involving themselves in matters such as these? Things like this are why I am considering voting against all incumbents when I have the chance.

For the Senate to be promoting some disreputable character such as Tiller is itself disreputable.

What if the "fetus" is a girl... isn't that violence against women? Is the term "baby" only used when the woman wants him/her? Otherwise, the unemotional term "fetus" is used. What's with that? Abortion IS an act of violence to the mind, body, and heart of every woman.

Tiller is now officially the Modern Day Saint of the lefties.

Newsflash to Barbara Boxer: her continued support for the barbarous practice of abortion (taking of innocent human life) has already brought all of humanity into 'a dark pit of violence'. Wake up, folks! Let's regulate the hell out of these killing chambers and stop the extinction of our progeny. satan uses and twists language to thwart "THE WORD" and I am against language manipulation by Boxer and her gang. Let's call murder murder whether it is the loss of life of a doctor who murders babies or the loss of the babies' lives and futures. It is murder not reproductive health. May the Lord be merciful to Tiller for his transgressions and to all of us who enabled Tiller to perform these unspeakable horrors.

Abortion by any other name is still an abomination - as is the world of Barbara Boxer.

Good work guys! I would like to add my two cents. How about condemning violence as a means of resolving the problem of babies being unwanted?

Posted Wednesday, June 24, 2009 11:12 AM By Pax Christi
I have only one thing to say to Boxer: "Ma'am -- oops, I mean Senator (excuse me for forgetting that you recently objected to being called "Ma'am" by a military officer during a Capitol Hill hearing) -- would you consider tweaking your proposed amendment to point out that society reaps what it sows and that violence begets violence?

Posted Wednesday, June 24, 2009 11:12 AM By tom
It is time for California voters to recognise the liability that "Maam" Boxer is and concentrate our efforts to replace her with an intelligent, fair minded Senator, The candidate should be judged on ability NOT on party affiliation.

Did Congress object to the murder of a USArmy member doing his recruiting duties???

While it is unfortunate that Dr. Tiller was murdered and the pro-life community condemns this crime, it does not change the fact that the man committed evil. Why should a resolution be passed lamenting his demise? Was a resolution passed lamenting the murder of Father Geoghan? I think that Dr. Tiller may have to face the souls of those that he murdered and pay the price for the what he did. It is horrific that Dr. Tiller was murdered in a church but the man was no saint. He is respected by some for getting rid of the unwanted but the whole situation is just sad.

Its getting really close, folks, this end of the times when all the lies and deception are going to be exposed to the Light. They can't praise someone for an act such as abortion, and reducing it to a 'contentious disagreement' so belittles the human person, so we all lose with that. These women in the senate need to sit down, and really think about what they are supposed to be doing there. Protecting women and children ought to be their highest goal, instead of praising a person who divorced themselves of all compassion and empathy, and covered their guilt with dishonesty. Shame on them, and shame on this country for being asleep at the switch when that train came down the track. It is now a wreck, and this country is paying for it and will pay for it in the future when we all disappear and no one is left to care for anyone.

PA, what kind of a church would have a man like that? Also, Ann Coulter made an interesting comparison: Tiller was murdered in his 203 trimester.

Posted Wednesday, June 24, 2009 10:15 PM By JLS
Yes, I was somewhat shocked that Tiller was murdered. How do I feel about it, his passing that is? I recall Scripture so often saying "Vengeance is mine, saith the Lord". Yes, Jesus extends mercy to all souls ... Is there any indication anywhere that Tiller accepted the mercy of God? I've never read of it. What about that deathbed expression of faith in Jesus? There was no deathbed in his case. I'm guessing that the choir, where his wife was singing praises to God, stopped at the sound of the first shot. Likely only silence accompanied Tiller's soul to the other side. Well, maybe silence on our side, but what about his reception party of 60,000 babies that he killed in torturous ways? Would they all be there screaming at him or singing lullabies for his comfort? Sixtythousand, can you imagine that number? That is an almost record crowd for a World Series game. Just think of the parking lot of such a stadium filled with spectators ... 60K souls on the witness stand next to the Pearly Gates. And that's only the dismembered and burned babies, and the ones with reduced cranial capacity ... what about the mothers of those babies who have been experiencing agony for decades, some of whom may actually have also passed into etermity and be standing there with their babies in the welcoming party? No doubt there might also be some fathers on that side, right there in the crowd as well. Maybe such souls got passes from Hell just to be there when Tiller shows up, maybe they all repented and have come down from Purgatory to pray for that one condemned soul. What a reunion, huh? A "father of death" surrounded with all the people he murdered and all those who were linked with the murders ... no less than 3x 60 thousand souls. Tiller directly impacted 180 Thousand souls with the brutal terminations of both body and love. And then all those in the cheering section, both dead and alive waiting for their turn? The number sure escalates rapidly, doesn't it?

Something is not right here. I think I must be dreaming. Mark from PA actually said something that I agree with! And to top that off, I found his post of June 24, 2009 2:36 PM to be pretty good. Somebody pinch me.

Have you ever talked to someone a few months after she cooperated in the murder of her own child? I have. She was sucidal, quit her job, dropped out of school, and could not function. So, when satan and his minions tell you that abortion is a Divine Right, don't listen to them. Abortion is ripping this society apart. When we practice violence in order to solve our problems, we promote violence. Dr. George Tiller promoted, and coooperated in the violent deaths of many unborn babies. Some of their mothers were killed in the process. Some of their mothers were maimed and injured and sterilized for life. His legacy is that he killed babies. I say to all of us: "Put down the sword. For those who live by the sword will die by the sword." If Jesus did not want his apostles to defend his life by lopping off the ear of the soldier, then we know that as Christians, we must do the same. And so, as we have done in the past, and will do in the future: we pray for our enemies. We pray for doctors like George Tiller who kill innocent babies. We pray for all who pass laws in support of such practices. We pray that our society will turn from evil and do good. We pray, we fast, we sacrifice and, most important: WE WITNESS. The word martyr means witness. We are ready to die for our beliefs.

OneoftheSheep, so have I. Weeks after aborting her ten week old son, a young college grad told me about it. She was filled with vengeance, anger, and rage. A few years before that, her roommate did the same thing and was filled with depression. I don't know what happened to either of them.

Mark from pa. Father Geoghan committed crimes over and over again. Crimes that were knowing covered up by the church so that he ended up abusing probably 100s more children then would of been possible.Tiller broke no state or federal laws. Poor analogy. A few weeks ago in here people were whining about guards carrying guns at abortion clinics. Totally ignoring the violence that has happened at clinics over the years . Lots of times the facts don't seem to matter in this forum.

Posted Friday, June 26, 2009 12:20 AM By JonJ
The only lament I have about Tiller's death is the damage his killer has done to the pro-life movement.

Posted Friday, June 26, 2009 3:02 PM By Mark from PA
Brian, Father Geoghan committed violence against children, sadly, with the knowledge of Church authorities, who let the abuse go on for years. Perhaps, Tiller broke no laws but he also committed violence against children. He took the lives of innocent children. You speak of "the violence that has happened at clinics over the years." Is the violence against the children whose lives were ended in these clinics included here?

Posted Monday, June 29, 2009 8:28 AM By JLS
brian, Tiller the Killer was not killed at a clinic, but in a church where his wife was in the choir. Are you suggesting that churches whose congregations include those complicit in abortion such as the parishes where Kennedy, Pelosi, Biden, Kerry, and other spiritual low lifers attend, start posting armed guards at the doors? brian, all you are doing is calumniating the pro-life movement by associating them with the wacko who murdered Tiller. Prolife has nothing to do with his death. And prolife has nothing to do with the spiritual deaths of the corrupt politicians who champion abortion ... they bring on their own eternal hell.

Mark , I'm pro-choice. Bringing up Geoghan seems starnge since he symbolized a great shame on the church , broke the law and the church was part of the cover-up. In your quest against a resolution , you mention a very dark subject that shames the church. It just was a very strange subject for you to bring up , but it is one that I continue to speak out about. if Cardinal Law was a mandatory reporter of crimes like Geoghan's like a school teacher is , he would be in jail now for failing to report the abuse. Instead , he was given a job of great honor. It sickens me.

jld , On May 11 there was a post in here about armed guards at an abortion clinic. It had comments like this "A 9 mm gun? Why does Planned Parenthood need guns? Is the murdering clinic letting its staff now shoot the unborn innocents?" and another comment ""Armed with a pistol"? Is this not an unnecessary escalation of tension that can only lead to unforseen incidents? " then Tiller is murdered. No not a clinic , but it is pretty clear why guards have guns at abortion clinics. You know that as do the folks who made those posts back on May 11. Your rambling about politicans has no connection to my post. How you can proclaim anything about what I am doing makes no sense at all. JonJ comments can be added to a list of oxymorans by proclaiming prolife and prodeath all in one sentence !

Posted Wednesday, July 01, 2009 5:01 PM By Mark from PA
Brian, I agree with you about Cardinal Law. I think some of the powers that be are clueless as to how sickened many of the laity are by what happened.

Posted Wednesday, July 01, 2009 10:35 PM By JLS
Brian, if you don't understand something, why do you write it off as "oxymoronic"? Better to ask when you don't know. Now as for your cryptic scenario of how obvious it is that there is good reason for abortion mills to post armed guards: It is also quite likely that they suffer the paranoia that comes with the guilt of sin. There are relatively no prolife attacks on abortion mills. Most of them do not post armed guards. If there were prolifers who wanted to violently attack, then they'd simply pick those. Simple as that. But the violent attacks on abortion mill personnel has never to my knowledge been done by any sane prolifer. I recall maybe three or four such events. Each event was done by a lunatic, who had no real stake in prolife protesting. Yet, Tiller murdered 60 thousand babies ... Brian, note that the babies were not armed with pistols.

Posted Sunday, July 05, 2009 3:30 PM By Mark from PA
I have to agree with much of what you say JLS. It must surely be noted that the rare attacks on abortion mills have not been approved by any pro-life groups but have instead been the work of lone men with mental health problems.

Posted Sunday, July 05, 2009 9:42 PM By JLS
One note of comparison here, PA: Prolifers always want all unborn babies to be born and live and be nurtured and develop as well as humanly possible in this fallen world. This includes those who statistics and common observation reveal will become terrorists, psycho killers, and even abortionists and homosexuals. It is man's work on earth to save himself and all other men from their sins. We can do this through union with Jesus Christ.

tom Boxer is pretty much liberal and very well liked. She is here to stay, unfortunately that is how California votes. The people of California has spoken and you can see the results. Pure disaster!

brian my stomach just wanted to throw up at your post stating that you are pro-choice. What is your reason to believe that people have a choice to destroy a life, especially an innocent one and helpless one too?? To me, it sends out the message that you do not believe in the dignity of human life. I pray you consider the facts about your so called "choice" and look at it from the stand point of the unborn...you may be enlightened and truth may actually set you free and even may save a life too.

Posted Sunday, July 05, 2009 10:55 PM By Abeca Christian
brian also here is what I posted before in the past and since you feel the need to express that you are "pro-choice", your post inspired me to re post this once again; I am a women and understand truly that women are being exploited in the abortion industry so how can you stand for that. Just think of how many young girls are being murdered at the hands of abortionists, many! Even our little boys too, that potentially can grow up to be gentlemen. The pro-choice movement is all a lie! How can someone stand up and say that it is my body and my choice when that little human life growing inside the uterus is not part of one's body! It is another human life!

Posted Wednesday, July 08, 2009 6:48 PM By Mark from PA
"Terrorists, psycho killers and even abortionists and homosexuals." Wow! This pretty much tells us how much you like gay people, JLS. The first three groups are people that commit violence. Do you realize how insulting it is to throw homosexuals in with the other groups as they have nothing in common?
