“The foundation of everything else”

Oakland bishop explains rationale behind Manhattan Declaration, calls it “critical turning point in our nation’s history”

Writing in his diocesan newspaper, The Catholic Voice, Oakland Bishop Salvatore Cordileone says the Manhattan Declaration brought together “over 100 leaders from the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Evangelical Protestant and Anglican traditions” in what he called “new ecumenical moment.”

“After centuries of differences and at times even hostilities, we experienced a new sense of unity, common purpose and just plain joy to be in each other’s company,” wrote Bishop Cordileone in a commentary published Feb. 22 in the Voice. “We realized that we can still respect differences while also doing what Pope John XXIII urged us to: focus on what unites us.”

Bishop Cordileone was among the original signers of the Manhattan Declaration, released on Nov. 20, 2009 by a group of prominent Christian clergy, ministry leaders and scholars. The 4700-word declaration addresses the sanctity of life, traditional marriage and religious liberty in the United States. The signers said they would not -- under any circumstances -- abandon their Christian consciences.

In addition to Bishop Cordileone, other prominent Catholic prelates who signed the declaration in November included Denver Archbishop Charles Chaput, Louisville Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, Cardinal Adam Maida, Archbishop emeritus of Detroit, Bishop Richard Malone of Portland, Maine, Archbishop John Myers, of Newark, NJ, Kansas City Archbishop Joseph Naumann, Archbishop John Nienstedt of St. Paul-Minneapolis, Phoenix Bishop Thomas Olmsted, Cardinal Justin Rigali, Archbishop of Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., Archbishop Donald Wuerl.

Since then, scores of other Catholic bishops and archbishops from across the U.S. have signed the document, including San Diego Bishop Robert Brom. (For a full list of ‘Religious & Organizational Leaders Signatories,’ Click Here.) Altogether, according to the Manhattan Declaration website, more than 425,000 persons have signed the document.

Among other things, the declaration states, "We are Christians who have joined together across historic lines of ecclesial differences to affirm our right -- and, more importantly, to embrace our obligation -- to speak and act in defense of these truths. We pledge to each other, and to our fellow believers, that no power on earth, be it cultural or political, will intimidate us into silence or acquiescence… We recognize the duty to comply with laws whether we happen to like them or not, unless the laws are gravely unjust or require those subject to them to do something unjust or otherwise immoral… We will not comply with any edict that purports to compel our institutions to participate in abortions, embryo-destructive research, assisted suicide and euthanasia or any other anti-life act; nor will we bend to any rule purporting to force us to bless immoral sexual partnerships, treat them as marriage or the equivalent or refrain from proclaiming the truth, as we know it, about morality and immorality and marriage and the family."

In his commentary on the declaration, Bishop Cordileone explains the thinking behind the document: “One may ask why the Declaration focuses on these issues. Certainly there are many other issues of social justice that, as people of faith, we should, and indeed are, working on. Life, marriage, and religious liberty, however, are the foundation of everything else, and we cannot have a healthy society if it is built on a faulty foundation. No matter how much good we do elsewhere, it will ultimately fail to achieve its end if the foundation is not solid.”

Are You Paying Attention, All You Experts Ready to Run Down Bishops? CRITICISM OF PRIESTS. Excerpt from the Pieta Prayer Book (Our Lord's revelations to Mutter Vogel): "One should NEVER attack a priest, even when he's in error, rather one should ray and do penance that I'll grant him My grace again. He alone fully represents Me, even when he doesn't live after My example! When a Priest falls we should extend him a helping hand through prayer and not through attacks! I myself will be his judge, no one but I! Whoever voices judgment over a priest has voiced it over me; child, never let a Priest be attacked, take up his defense. Child, never judge your confessor, rather pray much for him and offer every Thursday, through the hands of My Blessed Mother, Holy Communion (for Him). Never again accept an out-of-the-way word about a priest, and speak no unkind word (about them). Even it were TRUE! Every Priest is My vicar and My Heart will be sickened and insulted because of it~ If you hear a judgment (against a Priest) pray a Hail Mary. If you see a Priest who celebrates the Holy Mass unworthily then say nothing about him, rather tell it to Me alone! I stand beside Him on the altar! Oh pray much for my priests, that they'll love purity above all, that they'll celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass with pure hands and heart. Certainly the Holy Sacrifice is one and the same even when it's celebrated by an unworthy priest, but the graces called down upon the people is not the same!"

For those ready to jump down Bishop Cordileone's throat for "selling out to heretics", you might wish to check out the following resources: "Is the Reformation Over?: An Evangelical Assessment of Contemporary Roman Catholicism", Mark Noll, Carolyn Nystrom, 2008. Bishop Brom has given to all us priests a copy and told us he signed it. Thank you, Bishop Brom, for your courage and leadership in faith in this matter.

In signing the Manhattan Declaration is Bishop Cordileone signing for only himself or all the priests of his diocese? If for all then he also needs to investigate the organizations supported by this diocese such as CCISCO- Contra Costa Interfaith Sponsoring organization, and PICO Pacific Institute of Community Organizing, and La Raza who receive church support either through CCHD funds or by parishes providing meeting places and paying organization memberships into these organizations. They are the ones supporting and lobbying for abortion in state and federal legislation and using the names of the religious organizations as their membership.

We are called by Jesus Christ to discern the spirits; see Apocalypse. This means more than praying and fasting. Jesus shows us how to live in more ways than prayer and fasting. It is good to read St Paul, educated by Jesus in Heaven, to find out the nature of the Church. Jesus made it very clear that His people should not be silenced.

Charles O'Connell, Mutter Vogel is not even a recognized Saint of the Church, and her reported revelations are not Dogma. St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Augustine, St. Francis De Sales are however Saints of the Church and Doctors of the Church and they write something quite different about how to treat errant priests. The definition "Mad Dogs" comes immediately to mind from one of them in his description of such priests. If we followed your way of thinking, we would do nothing about the heresy filled Religious Education Congress and Cardinal Mahony! None of this; however applies to the good Bishop Cordileone. God bless, yours in Their Hearts, Kenneth M. Fisher God bless, yours in Their Hearts,

PELOSI will soon be the adjective synonym for anything evil. No person could ever do as she does without preternatural help. Our ONLY recourse is PRAYER-doesn't make me feel uncomfortable! She has triumphed in setting us against one another in her infestation of the Eucharist. How do we connect her to the controversy over priests-how can you even ask??!! You and I just be good Catholics! Our priests will triumph with the Priest of Priests!

Nazi Pelosi's voters are the ones extolled by some of the posters on this site. Her voters are the gay capital of the world, which is her congressional district. Just think that this nation's second in line to the presidency is the delegate of the most perverse district of the most perverse city in the world. Think about it. How did such a fiend get snuck into the role of House Speaker? This is an abomination of politics, and obviously a precurser to the abomination of desolation.

President Obama is in power today due to the indifference, or complicity, of American bishops. And with Obama comes abortion and many other social ills, as is being seen on a serial basis. The Manhattan Declaration is a fine step, but it effects nothing without subsequent action; not words (with which the institutional churches are quite proficient) but concrete things that people can see and related to, such as publicly rebuking political leaders, every time, who profess their Catholic faith, but then support and enable abortion (and there are many other examples). And, as part of this, the Catholic Church must lead to the ultimate good for mankind, which is salvation (not ecumenical discourse). A number of commentators suggested, with good cause, that if the Catholic faith were lived regularly by all Catholcs, then there would likely be no abortion (or at least not in its present, wild, generally unregulated form). Catholics should be more like John the Baptist than like Saul Alinsky.

St. Christopher I remember when elections where approaching, I remember of hearing of some priests expressing their approval for Obama, that truly broke my heart and it showed me how divided we are in our church. Even today we are divided, we are not like-minded, there are many who call themselves Catholic and who shame us and bring fourth great scandal and division due to sin and disobedience. It is far worst when our church leaders are also bringing down our faith with their shocking indifference's that do not match those of Christ.

I read the Manhattan Declaration, I love it. I kept a copy of it, to show it to those who are ignorant of what our church stands for, especially when they have ill assumptions about our Christian faith. I appreciate this declaration. Praise God!
