“Death tourists”
Euthanasia group sending people who want to kill themselves to Tijuana, where life-ending drugs are said to be easy to come by
Reforma, one of the most influential newspapers in Mexico, recently published on its front page a series of articles describing an option Exit International, a pro-euthanasia organization in Australia, is offering to aged and terminally ill patients: go to Tijuana to get life-ending drugs.
According to Exit, since 2001 more than 200 persons have traveled from Australia to Tijuana to secure pentobarbital, which is regularly used to anesthetize or euthanize animals. The drug is sold without control at veterinary pharmacies in cities along the Mexico-US border.
Known in Australia as Nembutal (one of its many commercial names), sodium pentobarbital is used in the Netherlands and in the state of Oregon for the practice of assisted suicide. Its distribution in Australia is illegal, and its sale in Mexico is permitted only by prescription, and is limited exclusively for veterinary medicine.
But Tijuana is a unique world, where getting any prohibited item is only a matter of asking the right person: “It’s as easy to get the suicide drug as to get vitamins,” concluded Reforma.
“Death tourists” travel 14 hours by airplane from Australia to Los Angeles, and then another two hours by bus to the Mexican border, the Mexico City daily reported. Just across the border, in the heart of Tijuana’s tourist district -- among cantinas, Mexican curio shops and restaurants -- they find several options to buy their suicide drug, at very moderate prices and without any inconvenient questions.
The Peaceful Pill Handbook, co-written by Exit International director Philip Nitschke, gives the addresses of various veterinary pharmacies in Tijuana that sell the product in its different presentations. Once the “death tourists” find a pharmacy and buy the drug, they go back home with their bottle of pentobarbital hidden in their baggage, Reforma reported.
Don Flounders, a 78-year-old Australian suffering from a malignant mesolthelioma, made the death trip to Tijuana this past Feb. 14. He declares himself an atheist, said Reforma, and asserts that “God cannot dictate how I’ll die; the most productive thing I can do with my body is to have it cremated and transformed into fertilizer.”
A 50-year-old American woman, under a fictitious name, agreed to collaborate with a Reforma reporter to show how easy it is for a foreigner to get barbituates at border-city veterinary pharmacies. In one such pharmacy, “Kate” bought “Sodium pentobarbital, 100 milliliters,” which had a dog’s image on its label. In another one, she bought “Anestesal,” also included in the Exit International handbook, with the instruction: “To practice euthanasia, a double or triple dose of the anesthetic is needed,” explaining, of course, that the product is for veterinary use. At another pharmacy she found “Fenidantoin,” another presentation of pentobarbital, 100 tablets, for only $12.
The activities of Exit International, including the trips to Mexico, have not gone unnoticed by Australian authorities. On May 5, a Sydney court began a trial for murder against an employee and an activist of the pro-euthanasia organization. Shirley Justin, 59, an Exit member, was accused of murdering Graeme Wylie on May 2006 with a lethal dose of Nembutal. Caren Jenning, 74, was charged as accomplice in the homicide for supplying the drug to Justin and for illegally bringing it to Australia from Mexico.

How sad. Pray for these poor souls who are fooled by worldly "wisdom" into suicide.

Pray also for Mexico's bishops and other Catholics, who have a moral obligation to raise alarms over this. Our Lady of Guadalupe has a few more serpent-gods to step on, it seems.

I have a copy of "The Peaceful Pill Handbood" that you have included in your report. The book can be purchased from Amazon. Thanks to this book, I knew exactly what to do when I travelled to Tijuana to obtain two vials of liquid Nembutal at a veterinary supply store. Why did I do this? Because two years ago I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and right now the chances of my recovery are virtually zero. And I take comfort in knowing that when it is time to go, I will go in the comfort of my own home, in the company of good friends, rather than in a sterile hospital room hooked up to machines, and I know that God will welcome me into His arms when that moment has arrived. No one has ANY right to interfere in my choice in this matter.

When society has such little regard for the sacredness of human life we can expect this kind of attitude to become a doctrine. First is contraception and failing that abortion, the institute of marriage is mocked and divorce commonplace. Next comes an abhorence towards getting old or sick and to remedy that just kill yourself. The comment by David Morasco expecting that God will welcome him into His arms after he checks out is absolutely insane as it is up to God alone, the Creator of life that decides the time of our end. Why do so many people listen to the ideologies of the world? The day the world rejects its God is the day man turns against himself. How sad.

David Morasco, have you tried praying the Rosary and doing Eucharistic Adoration? If you are able, please read Preparation for Death by St. Alphonsus Ligouri. And one is not required to go into a hospital. Ask Our Lady to help you via the Memorare prayer: Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen. Don't forget that you can always petition for a miracle.

The onocologist I had had a brother or father (they had the same last name) who was an onocologist too. The relative onocologist wrote in a Catholic newspaper that if an onocologist is properly trained and good, the patient should never be in unbearable pain. He said that none of his patients had ever asked him to kill them when they were dying. The sad fact is that some in the medical field just do not want to bother with making patients comfortable or they were never properly trained. So people go to such men as Dr. Kevorkian who was not even an onocologist, but a pathologist and had no idea how to help people who were in the dying process. Ever since Roe vs. Wade, physicians, at least in most cases, are no longer required to take the Hippocratic Oath, or a similar oath.

David: Darlin', for you and people who can think (I don't care whether they choose the same as you, only that they think) I offer you my warmest wishes and a little bit of love to help you in your time of distressed health. ~ "Don Flounders [...] declares himself an atheist, said Reforma, and asserts that “God cannot dictate how I’ll die ..." " Um. Atheists don't believe in God. Right? Even so, I'm willing to bet that a God who wants to control life like an over-protective mother-hen doesn't exist. Instead is the loving God to whom Mr David Morasco goes to. ...That's the God I choose to believe in. I hope others do too. ~ Fr MP "Don't forget that you can always petition for a miracle." In all due respect, Father, that sounds like trying to buy some Jesus. Didn't the Church (infinitely wise piece of theological pie, that one) stop selling those awhile ago? If not, I'd love to stock up ^.^

Fr. M.P, I got my miracle. Through the good advice of a priest who was loyal to the teachings of the Church and the majesterium; though the help of good Catholic doctors, male and female; through the help of other pro-life Christian doctors and hospital workers, and my wearing the Miraculous Medal, I was declared totally cured of cancer about four years ago. It was about eighteen years ago that I got the cancer. And because I did not take the birthcontrol pill all I had were two minor surgeries, radiation treatment and no chemotheraphy. Hang in there Fr. M.P. no matter what they say; you are right. Keep the Faith, Father. Keep the Faith. And pray for me too, that when God lefts the shield and my life ends, I will be one of the sheep and not the goats.

martha, you're confusing the selling of indulgences for the forgiveness of sin ... that is not at all what this priest is saying. He is saying pray for a miracle. I'm surprised you are so skeptical of miracles ... you'd do well to look for some, as they are "out there". Miracles happen. You just have to learn to discern the real ones from the marketed ones. Easiest way to do this is for you yourself to do the praying in private, do not tell anyone, and just wait ... God is faithful to answer prayer. In some way, if you keep your faith and ears open, you will see what you deep down want to see. Recall the verse, "Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord", said by a rabbi who had been muted by God, as he cast his eyes on the infant Jesus. martha, Christianity is real ... it is the font of reality for this world. You can turn the lights out if you choose, or you can believe and see, live, love and enter eternal joy.

What is it is some of us that makes us want to control even how we die down to the very last detail? Isn't it pride? Don't we fall from grace when we defy God's providence in such a manner? Of course, if we don't believer in God and his mercy in the first place, when the bad prognosis is heard it is only natural to flare up and take charge for the very last time. I lived the way I wanted too and now I will die in the manner I want too is a workable but proud look at life. How very proud! We all need to humble ourselves before God and death. It is funny how we trust in our old doc to save us. We have confidence in him or we would change to another. But....when the death sentence is before us we want to get shed of him, write up a document (living will) that in no way recognizes a God or our own doctors compassion for us. Worse yet we trade our trusted doctor for a friend (power of attorney) who has had no medical experience. Yet we all know that friend turns on friend from time to time...what are we coming too when we try to predict the unpridectable and control the uncontrolable? Just that should cause us to lay our burdens on the Lord and expect the best from those that surround us at the time of our death. Modern medicine has put suffering at a low ebb. We no longer have a right to fear it. And yet our savior suffered unto death. Are we, or just our pride, greater than Him? How beautiful for my husband and I to go to Denmark, Swisserland, or where death on demand is permitted, and come back in a urn. The children would be so proud of us for taking that burden from them. However, there is a life cycle that we are all involved in. It actually was created by God. Part of that life cycle is to let our children see us become as helpless and they were as new born babes. Love is real and needed and part of the natural law of God. Life is sacred at all times for all people. How dare we interfere with that mystery that no human can understand.

The saddest part is that there are so many people out there that found and operate organizations like Exit International, just so that they can devote their skill, energy, and cunning to coax confused, ill people to kill themselves. I suppose it's no different from Planned Parenthood and street corner drug dealers.

Obviously you religious people that believe that God is the only one that dictates when you die are full of it. You have not sat by a loved one for weeks and watched them suffer and wished that there was something you could DO to stop their suffering. I am in agreement that it is our life and if we are told that we have a terminal illness and our suffering is only to get worse I say let me end it. Why spend time and resources on me knowing it is not going to help when they could be put to a better use on a person that needs these resources to LIVE. .

Nina - These 'religious' people are (unwittingly, I think, or they'd reword it) buying in to the same mythology of the Greek Fates; there is a time for everything, and God will decide when you're done living. Whether or not your friends and family and loved ones are ready for you to be done. ...But that's another thing~

David Morasco: My heart hurts for you. Please do not take your own life. Let God's will be done, not yours. God knows what is best for you. He has a time planned that you are to die. God allows these sufferings to happen to good people because when we die we all have to suffer the pains of Purgatory before we can enter into His Kingdom, if we are blessed to make it there. There is a Purgatory, so why not suffer while your still here. Offer up all your pain and suffering(and the pain and sufferings of your loved ones) for your sins. It is so very hard to suffer and to have your loved ones see you suffer, but God knows what is best. I will be very brave and tell you what priests should be telling you that they don't. I know I will be labeled as judgemental and people will probably think, who do you think you are.....BUT if you take this drug, you have committed suicide, murder of yourself. You will go to Hell. Christ said, "Thou shall not kill". That includes yourself. No, I can't judge your soul, but I know that willful mortal sin causes you to condemn yourself to Hell. I know I can't personally stop you from killing yourself, but maybe the fear of God can. Yes, God is a loving God, but He is also a just God. Please ask for a good, Traditional, Catholic Priest to help you go to God instead of a lethal drug. I will keep you in my prayers. I have a very tender heart, and even though I do not know you, I have been crying tears through this post that I have written here. God bless you David!

Can you just imagine such selfish people - ending their lives when they could instead be working and supporting their local priests and sisters so THEY don't have to work.
