‘A reality check from the discipleship front’

Denver Archbishop: ‘Anti-Catholic bitterness drives some of the loudest voices in the current health-care debate’

(Editor: The following was excerpted from a column published Nov. 18 in the Denver Catholic Register, the official archdiocesan newspaper.)

By Most Rev. Charles J. Chaput
Archbishop of Denver

What the hell don’t you understand about the term separatin [sic] of Church and State. Keep your evil hands off of our Health Care Bill. Mind your own business. We don’t care about your beliefs, and if you want to meddle in our affairs, we will be coming for you. If that’s how you want to play, we will come for your pedophile priests, your ill-gotten money you stole for decades. The Catholic church is just another organized crime syndicate that should be put out of business. Get the f--k away from Congress, or you will regret it…

That’s a real e-mail from a real person. The man who sent it last week was either very candid or very foolish about his anger: he added his real name and e-mail address. I’ve withheld them here because I like to hope that most people, or at least many of them, are better than the poisonous things they sometimes write. But this e-mail does teach a useful lesson, because it’s not just a case of a random bigot getting in touch with his inner bully. Instead, it’s a snapshot of the anti-Catholic bitterness that drives some of the loudest voices in the current health-care debate.

Let’s remember that the Founders encouraged an active role for religion in the nation’s public life. Let’s recall that freedom of speech for Catholics, their leaders and their Church is constitutionally protected, just as it is for all citizens. Let’s also finally remember that Catholic-baiting is one of America’s oldest and most favored forms of hatred. The irony is that some of today’s ugliest bigots posture themselves as socially “progressive” and work in politics or the mass media, or both.

Catholics entered this year’s national health-care discussion with good will and a long track record of public service. Catholic medical care is a national network. Most Catholics, as part of their Christian faith, see decent health care for all persons as a social obligation. They’re eager for some form of good health-industry reform. But “reform” isn’t a magic word. It isn’t an end in itself. The content of the reform matters vitally.

For months Catholic leaders have worked vigorously with congressional and White House staff to craft sound health-care reform legislation. Service to the poor, the sick and the suffering is part of the Church’s Gospel vocation. The bill passed by the House on Nov. 7 was a step toward a goal that is shared, in principle, by most Catholics. Like most bills, it was a mixed success. Critics argue that it lacks adequate conscience protections; that its penalties are extreme and largely unknown to the public; that it’s too complex; that it violates the Catholic principle of subsidiarity; and that it’s financially damaging and unsustainable.

" These two ideas are at war with each other. The bishop's thinking, in this paragraph, is incoherent beyond measure. Are the critics right or wrong -- that is the issue that must be addressed with a thoroughness beyond the scope of USCCB beaurocrateeze.

Archbishop Chaput says that the House bill was "a step toward a goal that is shared, in principle, by most Catholics." Archbishop Chaput, aren't you one of the "critics" who recognize that it violates subsidiarity? What about fiscal responsibility? Support of any health-care bill is support of government takeover.

This is war I have long waited and prayed for, the die is cast, time choose what side you are on, its either the Cross of Christ of the gods of this world. To all the so called "progressive" Catholics time to pick a side.

" ... that it’s too complex ... ": Exactly !!! Solution is simple, which is to produce many more doctors. But, alas, I've never read any comment on such a proposal. Guess the old supply and demand curve have become obsolete.

Separation of church and state? Listen here mister, I may be a devout Catholic but you have no right to impose a health care system that defies my faith and beliefs of human dignity! You have no right to take my tax money and use it to destroy human life and other immortal activities! Your words don't discourage me and they don't take my rights away to continue to fight the good fight. In case you didn't know but we Christians have a moral duty to stand up and speak up for what is morally right by God, that is why you will continue to see our church and the faithful continue to speak out. God bless!

As a senior (76) I am not in favor of the health care bill. Not only for it's questionable stand on abortion but on the basis of health care for all, including illegal immigrants. No matter what the Bishops say, breaking laws does not win favors. At least it shouldn't. Jesus said "render to Caesar what is his and To God what is His". The Catholic Church looks on these illegal immigants as potential supporters of the Church. Not true. They are more interested in their cars than they are in the collection box. Many of them go to other religions. The Mexican area here in this town has at least three churches that are not Catholic servicing the area. I do not want to lost my Medicare benefits so that some illegal immigrant can have health care. As is, most of their babies are paid for by Medicaid (Medical in California). This is not a new phenomena. I worked in a hospital in the 70's and 80's and most of the Mexicans who came to the hospital to have their babies were on welfare. And it continues today in a much larger way.

Archbishop Chaput needs the support of good Catholics just like Bishop Cordeleone. These Prelates need our prayers and moral support.

credit the good archbishop of denver for proclaiming Catholic positiion on the coming health bill. Let us hope and pray that the Senate will, in the end , have a strong provision for the life of the unborn. There are Catholic haters in these United States. WE must pray that they will recant their statements. God bless the Archbishop of Denver.

In California, I believe the e-mail cited would constitute a terrorist threat and a fall under the hate crimes statute. I hope the Archdiocise has sent it over to Denver PD.

Posted Tuesday, November 24, 2009 2:01 PM By JLS
Grisha, you yourself should go and hunt the terrorist down and reckon with him.

Canisius: If you want to fight in a religious war, go to India where the church is truly under attack. This is a "fight" about a major piece of legislation, not a war.

It is so sad that so many people are incapable of reading the constitution, independent thought, or recognizing the lies of PP, NARAL, and the DNC! There is NO "separation of church and state" in the constitution!!! This was an invention of liberal atheists!!! They are referring to the requirement that Congress can NOT create a "national religion" as they have in England. That is NOT at all the same as what they claim! (Lies seem to be their credo!) The founding fathers specifically included God in ALL public meetings/proceedings! How is that excluding God from government? Anyone that has even a basic understanding of history knows that the founding fathers had every intention of including God in every aspect of government!!! (Sadly, this is another clear indication that our educational system is failing!) ALL true, pious Catholics are required to include their faith in every aspect of their life...especially in their political decisions!!! We are called to vote according to our faith and beliefs, not the false/satanic "Political Correctness" of the liberal atheists! We need to reject their lies and brainwashing and return our culture to one that reflects God's requirements for morality! Our faith does NOT only apply to Sunday! Satan is directly attacking our children! It is a "war" of morality because it determines the morality of our culture! (God or Satan? Good or Evil?) Is God important to our lives or not? Is He our "Lord" of all or NOT? Are we hypocrites or true followers of Christ? We have all seen the terrible outcome of the lack of morality in the present culture as compared with 50 years ago! Women no longer get any respect. Our children are exposed to terrible behaviors and crimes that are "tolerated" as "normal. Our society has disgusting problems that were non-existent 50 years ago, simply because society has rejected God! If a politician does NOT reflect Catholic values, we are required to expose them and vote them OUT!

The devil is working overtime and has convinced many so called Catholics since Vatican 2 that one should define Catholic teachings themselves. I guess if it feels good do it. God have mercy on our souls. Does anyone fear God anymore ?

Canisius seems to have it being a war and not a mere fight. Maybe he sees it in the way St Paul sees the Church being at war in the spiritual domain.

What is happening to the Church in India, Grisha? I thought that the Church was growing there and had a good supply of priests and nuns. We have several priests from India serving in our diocese. They are fine men.

JLS: I'm Wayyyyy too old for that kind of thing. Let Canisius do it.

This isn't about health care reform. It is all about more power in the government. The things that need fixing in our current health care system could be fixed easily, with far less than 2.3 trillion dollars.

Grisha I consider you and every other "open minded progressive" enemies of the Church. It is your side with its "tolerance and diversity" that have cost countless souls, your entire self absorbed, pot headed, over sexed 60's generation has caused so much damage to not only Church but to the society as a whole. This is war, it has been going on for a very long time. Except you and the rest of the progressives are too blind to notice. I spent a year fighting in Kosovo where I witnessed the destruction of countless Christian Church's and monasteries by the hand of Muslims, another group the progressive left adores. I pray constantly for the complete and utter destruction of the Left not only in this country but worldwide, it is the Left that made the state, god.

Grisha, "old" is a state of mind. The devil is referred to as "old" and Jesus is referred to as "new". You need to escape the city that is seducing you, or else get some power from God, more than you imagine is available to fight the good fight.

Posted Wednesday, November 25, 2009 9:32 AM By The Truth Hurts
Grisha, Are you even wayyyy too old to learn what the Catholic Church really teaches? Since you seem to gravitate towards progressive thinkers remember that "Tolerance and Apathy are the last virtues of a dying society"....Aristotle

Mark - Fundmentlist Hindus have been attacking Catolic institutons, priests, nuns and non-Catholic clients. Arson, mudder and rape. It was relly bad about a year ago. They need our prayers

Canisius if only more people had the same convictions that you have, we would be in better shape. I pick Christ.

Posted Wednesday, November 25, 2009 5:01 PM By Mark from PA
That is sad for me to hear, Grisha. I always thought that Hindus were a very peaceful people and not into violence. From what I have read, it seems that many of the "untouchable" Hindus are converting to the Catholic faith. But it is hard to think of them actually killing people, I thought they didn't even kill cows, much less people.

Mark Fm PA: I got most of my info from an Indian priest who was at my parish last year. Very bright guy who is a Ph.D. candidate in Rome. The way he explains it, those crimes are committed by extremist, politicized, fundamentalist Hindu factions. What they see is that the lower castes find Christianity attractive because of our beliefs in equality and, especially in the case of the Catholic Church, the ability and willingness to provide quality education. Apparently, with educated "untouchables" the caste system falls apart. Some of the lower classes also gravitate towards Islam, but attacking Muslims is much more likely to bring retaliation. CNS and even New Oxford Review had some stories on it, including the horrible rape of a nun who had the courage to speak publicly about it. We should all giver thanks today for our religious freedom in America
