“Now there are 11 cities and one Planned Parenthood”

Planned Parenthood closes one of two abortion centers in San Mateo County

When members of the group San Mateo Pro Life arrived at a Planned Parenthood abortion center in Redwood City to pray the rosary on Saturday, July 3, they encountered a pleasant surprise: the clinic had closed.

With little fanfare, Planned Parenthood has shuttered the doors of the Roberts Women's Health Center, 1230 Hopkins Avenue in Redwood City. The facility was one of two operated by Planned Parenthood-Golden Gate in San Mateo County.

“To better serve our clients, we have decided to consolidate the Redwood City and San Mateo health centers,” a sign posted in the window at the Robert’s Women’s Health Center read.

A search of Planned Parenthood-Golden Gate’s website turned up no information on the closing of the Redwood City facility. There was also no mention of the closing on Planned Parenthood-Golden Gate’s page on Facebook. A search for the facility on Planned Parenthood’s nationwide clinic locater resulted in the following message: “Health center information is unavailable at this time,” with a toll free number to call for more information.

“In San Mateo County there were 11 cities and 2 Planned Parenthoods,” said an email message sent out by San Mateo Pro Life. “Now there are 11 cities and ONE Planned Parenthood… All of us in San Mateo County are now concentrating on closing this last PP. God willing, it will be soon.”

Before its closing, the Redwood City facility offered abortions, various forms of contraception, STD counseling and other typical Planned Parenthood “services.”

In the meantime, Planned Parenthood-Golden Gate continues to operate facilities in San Francisco, Oakland, Hayward, Rohnert Park, San Mateo, San Rafael, and a special ‘satellite clinic’ in San Francisco named the “Good Samaritan Family Resource Center” whose mission, says Planned Parenthood’s website, “is to help immigrant families access social services.”

In an effort to attract new clients, Planned Parenthood-Golden Gate has launched an “iPad Scavenger Hunt” for new patients and current patients who “refer a friend” who has not been seen at a Planned Parenthood facility for four years or more. Participants are asked to answer eight multiple-choice questions based on information published on its website or Facebook page, and submit the entry during a visit to one of Planned Parenthood-Golden Gate’s clinics by Oct. 1. A drawing to determine who wins the iPad will be held on Oct. 8, according to the website.

Planned Parenthood-Golden Gate is not the only Planned Parenthood affiliate in California that has consolidated its operations in recent months over “budget constraints.” On June 21, California Catholic Daily reported that Planned Parenthood Mar Monte based in San Jose was discontinuing programs at Sierra High School in Truckee and at the California Conservation Corps in Meyers. Truckee is in Nevada County; Meyers in El Dorado County.

Every little bit of progress in the war against the murderers of babies is good, but in this case, it's not very far to drive from one city to another anywhere in San Mateo County. A healthy person could walk from Redwood City to San Mateo and never earn bragging rights. Budget constraints can be temporary, and some misguided Ted Turner type may decide to leave a fortune to Planned Parenthood and reinfuse the institution with the will to kill. Until this scourge is eradicated completely, I will applaude each victory but save my rejoicing until V-USA Day.

Authentic "Hope and Change."

Wow. I am so happy about this. I'm trying not to get my hopes up, I hope this continues. We should celebrate by bringing flowers to a local Catholic church and placing them on the alter. Praise Be Jesus Christ!

I understand your concerns, Maryanne, but for those who spend hours and days praying in front of these killing centers, it is, indeed, a huge blessing to reduce the number of locations. There are so few people willing/able to actually come to the Sidewalk to minister to women that each abortion clinic closure is a tremendous help, such that it then concentrates the incoming abortion-vulnerable clientele traffic-flow to one site, rather than two, making it easier for us to reach more moms and save more babies, so it a reason for great Thanksgiving! For any community that would like to organize a local 40 Days for Life, the registration begins July 21st-30th, with the international starting date of September 22nd. Google "40 Days for Life" for all the details about bringing a peaceful, prayerful, loving, life-saving ministry to your nearest abortion business.

I can hear the angels singing "Alleluia!" because any victory thru prayer is a great victory. There ought to be celebration and prayers of thanksgiving. Every little victory helps. As someone once said "you're not finished when you're defeated, you're only finished when you quit" so, NEVER QUIT and victory will be yours. Keep up the good work, Wynette. Every closing of any killing center is a sock in the eye to the enemy.

Laurette can work gays into any conversation if needed. I mean, how can actually giving birth mean less to anyone than gays?

Thank you, Wynette Sills, for your post. I am one of those who has prayed, often alone, in front of Planned Parenthood in three locations in Ventura County alone. I've stood in the rain and have heard more cars beeping in support than rude young men (never any other segment of society) honking and shouting in derision and sometimes anger. They only do this when accompanied by other young men. Sometimes we are accompanied by others during the 40 Days for Life, and several of them, including some of the leaders, are Protestants and fully committed to the cause. I have yet to see a priest or nun praying or holding signs in front of any Planned Parenthood when I have been there, but I could have missed it. Thanks for getting the word out though. I really appreciate it.

Maryanne, there are priests who pray in front of abortion clinics and for the 40 Days.

Yes, certainly, there are priests and nuns both who pray in front of abortion clinics and during the 40 Day for Life, of course. I just have never seen them in Ventura County, except one time, over 25 years ago, in Oxnard. I would never make the grave error of saying no priests or nuns anywhere ever pray in front of Planned Parenthood clinics, but I am sorry to say that no priest or nun has ever joined us in front of any of the clinics in Ventura County ever, even though I know of a few priests who have wished us wll, but I can never understand why they never show up. I hope someday I will see it with my own eyes.

Maryanne, the point you are making about why more religious do not show up at the abortion clinics is one I've wondered about for thirty years. It remains guesswork as to why they are so scarce. Even at the annual March for Life in Washington DC, what with hundreds of local priests and the countless tens of thousands of people coming by bus and plane from around the nation, there ought to be thousands of priests and nuns show up there ... so why don't they is the mysterious question?

The priests are ministering to the people, I like to give them the benefit of the doubt, I think that if they have large parishes, sick people to tend too, funerals etc etc, I'm sure that it is not always possible for all of them to attend a pro-life prayer time at a clinic. I have noticed that priests from small parishes, they are the ones who sometimes make it.
