“Deeply honored and grateful”
Santa Clara University chancellor to get award that will be presented to him by one of California’s most avid fans of Planned Parenthood
Former Santa Clara University president and current chancellor Fr. Paul Locatelli is scheduled to accept an award on Feb. 20 that will be presented to him by one of California’s most ardent supporters of Planned Parenthood.
Fr. Locatelli, said a Jan. 21 news release from the Jesuit-run university, “will receive special recognition for his work and commitment to the Silicon Valley community on Tuesday, Feb. 20, when he receives the 2009 David Packard Award from the Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Network. The David Packard Award is presented annually by Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Network to honor a person who 'brings an entrepreneurial, cross-boundary, problem-solving approach' to the region's challenges."
The award, said the news release, “will be presented to Locatelli by Morgan Family Foundation President Becky Morgan” during a luncheon at the “State of the Valley Conference.” Morgan, of Los Altos Hills, is a longtime backer of Planned Parenthood. She has contributed at least $865,000 to the defeat of parental notification initiatives in California, beginning with Proposition 73 in 2005. Last year alone, Morgan gave $140,000 to help defeat Proposition 4, a family notification before a minor’s abortion initiative backed by California’s Catholic bishops.
In 2006, the Planned Parenthood Federation of America gave Morgan its “President and Chair’s Courage and Integrity Award.” A PPFA announcement at the time said the award was given to “Becky Morgan from Planned Parenthood Advocates Mar Monte for her unparalleled contributions to defeating Proposition 73, which resulted in protecting the health and safety of teens throughout California.”
In addition to Morgan’s personal contributions to political campaigns backed by Planned Parenthood, the Morgan Family Foundation has awarded thousands of dollars to Planned Parenthood affiliates in California in the form of program grants.
"I'm deeply honored and grateful to have been selected by the JVSV board for the 2009 David Packard award," said Fr. Locatelli in the news release. "This award recognizes the contribution of the Santa Clara University community to this valley and beyond, something that David Packard would have liked to have seen. I'm also honored to be among the extraordinary Silicon Valley leaders who have been recognized in the past."
Fr. Locatelli stepped down as president of Santa Clara University in December 2008 after 20 years at the post. “He took on an expanded role in Rome as Secretary of Higher Education for the Society of Jesus,” said the university statement, and was appointed chancellor by his replacement, Fr. Michael Engh, “to continue advancing Santa Clara's global initiatives.”

It is not about Becky Morgan, it is about Fr. Paul Locatelli, S.J. and his many years of fine service! You should be so favored by the Lord!!

The late Pope John Paul II rejected a gift of five million dollars from a woman who opposed Church teachings ... apparently that lesson has been lost to Fr. Locatelli.

It sounds like Fr. Locatelli is honored and elated to choose earthly honors and rewards from the "donators of death" over heavenly rewards that bring eternal life. There is also nothing honorable about the University of Santa Clara advancing the global message that "crosses all of the boundaries" of basic human decency. "What does it profit a man, if he gains the whole world but suffers the loss of his own soul."

Apparently Father Locatellli is not familar with guilt by association. The Fatima predictions march on.

I think they're showing insensitivity to Catholics by selecting this odious person to present the award. Father should have had the courage to request a private presentation by FedEx courier.
These pubic demonstrations only confuse Catholics who are already too dedicated to fitting in, after all "If Father can do it ...."

Lincoln said it is never right to do what is wrong. Fr. Locatelli needs to do the right thing and decline to accept an award from a woman who donated thousands of dollars to defeat Prop. 4. Only Satan would applaud this kind of evil conduct. There is no "courage" and no "integrity" in a person who spends money that will lead to the killing of thousands of innocent children.
Fr. Locatelli needs to remember Who he works for. A little righteous anger, like JESUS turning over tables in the Temple, is what is needed from Fr. Locatelli. Deeds of darkness like the holocaust of abortion need to be exposed. This is a time to not tolerate the intolerable and to defend the defenseless.

What does anyone expect any more? Santa Clara University is on the list for year 2009 to show "The Vagina Monologues" or whatever the porno lesbian "enlightened" trash is. But under the guise of "Academic Freedom" (License?) is really stretching the rationale to allow it! Catholic Universities are no longer Catholic and should not be advertised as such, Jesuits or no Jesuits.

Scandals must come, but woe to him who causes scandal, as Jesus said.

And Walter Hoye II refused to pay a small fine in lieu of exhonerating himself and his work because he said and I quote: "I do not wish to take the devil's candy."

Every day, the Church accepts gifts from countless people who oppose Church teachings. Without gifts from people who oppose Church teachings, there would be little money for the Church.

"You should be so favored by the Lord!! " Thomas Miles, your statement raises in interesting question -- do human accolades signify our Lord's commendation? Is there a one-to-one correspondence between the praise of men and that of God? When I read Hebrews 11, or the rest of scripture for that matter, or look at our long list of saints, I am at least reticient to answer these questions in the affirmative.

What little I know of the Packard Foundation leads me to believe it, too, is a pro-abort entity. So there is double cause to be concerned about this particular award.

Recall in memory, saintly Fr. Joe Devlin SJ, who exampled pro-life in Vietnam, and objecting to U.S. solution when boat people girls were pregnant from Thai piracy. Recent Biblical 40th year of Humanae Vitae brought zero attention. Now we have Obama-nation while rejecting Fatima and our Popes.

"That's a chain of office you're wearing? .....Sir Richard is appointed Attorney General for Wales. For Wales? Why Richard, it profits a man nothing to give his soul for the whole world....but for Wales! "
Any similarity to actual persons and honors is purely intended.

Our Lady of Guadalupe School in Bakersfield, Ca. was going to invite pro-abortion, pro-sodomite marriage, and Margret Sanger award winner Dolores Huerta to speak to Catholic school children. Because of the quick action of parents and CCD, Huerta was uninvited. Sadly in the Bakersfield case the diocese of Fresno was silent and went into hiding. The Jesuit in this case will take the award because his superiors will applaud his award. The local bishop, like msot other California bishops will be silent and probably hiding on a local golf course. The inaction of the bishops and religious superiors cause scandal to the faithful.

Its always astounding to me to read of priests who live in this culture and somehow never recognize the furious boil its in, compunded increasingly, to me, by the deadly brew of St. Augustine's, "the world, the flesh & the devil" writ huge.
And in what kind of bubble does Fr. Locatelli reside? Does he not know the terrible things that Planned Parenthood does, the kind of evil dupliticousness they engage in to make their blood money off the corpses of God's innocents? There are times when I feel as if the concept of "The world, flesh & devil" has now fused into one deadful entity; Satan himself. (perhaps it always really has been). And didn't Fr. Locatelli recieve fifteen years of theological training to be a Jesuit, and wasn't a big part of his priestly formation about being aware when evil raises its ugly head to tempt, decieve & eventually ruin us?
To me, its very simple -- Father should be severely censured for accepting this award from such a person, and his Bishop should make sure he doesn't follow through with it: if he does, how about public excommunication? There just HAS to be a stop to all this horrible example by (some) priests who seem to be terminally clueless as to the age we ALL live in --- GOD BLESS ON YOUR PAPER'S MARVELOUS WORK!! ----MARKRITE

Gee...what was the award for? Did Fr Locatelli participate in any unethical activity to win the award? Gee....maybe I can't give out an award because 20 years ago I said ****. Whoever wrote this article used the premises of guilt by association and ad hominem attack. Must we see how many logical fallacies we can cram into our catholic reasoning? Who then are we to get to give out awards? I think Jesus is probably a tad busy these days. Who else is worthy?

Father Locatelli for the good of souls and to avoid creating confusion do not accept. Since every jesuit takes a special fourth vow of obedience to the Pope it is imperative not to give even the appearance of scandal. How many aborted babies never got a chance to live and maybe even go on to profess vows. How many vocations that never were! Son of St Ignatius fight the culture of death which has so easily taken root in California.

The group which is presenting this award to Chancellor Locatelli is called Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Network. Their Web site indicates that they continue the founders' 1992 initiative to bring together "leaders from business, labor, government, the universities and the non-profit sector to think outside the box and build creative solutions" Locatelli could well be a suitable candidate to be honored by such a group. What is bizarre is that they decide to have the award presented to this Catholic priest by a prominent supporter of the killing of the unborn. In checking the Website of JV:SV, I discover that there are 8 executives on "The Joint Venture Team" and 48 prominent Silicon Valley people on the board of directors. None of these people are named Becky Morgan! What an iincredibly inappropriate choice to make the award! What did the people at JV:SV really have in mind? Of course, I would also have to join you and your letter-writers in faulting Fr. Locatelli for having failed to check out the woman who was presenting this award.

"Every day, the Church accepts gifts from countless people who oppose Church teachings."
- yes, and most of them are standing in the communion line at Catholic Churches on Sunday. And the rest of them are also contributing to support the annual PSA (Pastors Supporting Anarchy) Drive

If you truly practice your faith then you would be out fighting for justice and spreading love not seating in front of your computer bad-mouthing the Catholic church and Father Locatelli. You people remind me of the scribes and the Pharisees in the gospel of John 8. “So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.” How dare you throw stones.
|

Fr Locatelli had bad mouthed himself by his actions. Also, Julie, you might think about your private interpretation of the verse you quoted. But even if you got that right, just think about your own stone throwing. The defenders of evil typically do not have any reason to furnish to support their position: There are two things they do instead; one is to throw stones such as Julie has done; and the other is to claim that the reason is beyond human understanding, and that if you don't understand it then it is impossible to explain it to you. There is a word for that sort of thing ... uh, oh yes, "phariseeism".

what is becoming of catholics that they have sold their souls for rewards on earth .the priest are leading but not in the way jesus wants . I beleve if all cafhlics stood together we would have a chance at ending abortion.

Anna Mathews, the sad truth is that many of those same Catholics who are voting for pro-abortion candidates are getting abortions or have their girlfriends or wives get abortions. We need to face the facts. Some people of other religions are more pro-life than some Catholics.

I think that fewer Catholic have abortions percentage wise than people of other religions. Our Church as a whole is more pro-life.

This is not the first time Father Locatelli has disappointed pro lifers. He let me know personally in a letter of his approval of the Santa Clara Law School's choice of Judge Phyllis Hamilton as commencement speaker last year. This is the same Judge Hamilton who voted in favor of overturning the ban on partial birth abortion. I don't know what it's going to take to get the Society of Jesus to actually make a strong stand for life on it's Santa Clara Campus .
