Hey, Hey, Baby Gay! What Do You Do? What Do You Say?

Research "strongly suggests that sexual preference is biologically determined in animals, and possibly in humans.”

Do biological factors --- for instance, hormonal imbalances in utero --- tend to skew an unborn baby’s future sexual inclination? And if so, would it be ethical to correct those imbalances prenatally in order to encourage a normal heterosexual outcome?

Scientists at the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station in Oregon are researching the cause, and (some have claimed) the cure of abnormal sexual orientation in rams; and the Rev. R. Albert Mohler Jr., president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kentucky, theorizes that if similar factors apply to humans, prenatal treatment to normalize intrauterine hormone levels would be justified to ensure a child’s healthy development.

The scientists, however, though they have examined whether a sheep's sexuality can be altered through various treatments (for instance, by altering hormones to make "straight" sheep "gay"), have said that their research has nothing to do with seeking a cure for homosexuality. And, what's more, they have not even been successful in altering a sheep's sexuality.

The Rev. Joseph Fessio, founder of Ignatius Press in San Francisco and currently chancellor of Ave Maria University in Florida, agrees. "Same-sex activity is considered disordered," Fessio said. "If there are ways of detecting diseases or disorders of children in the womb, and a way of treating them that respected the dignity of the child and mother, it would be a wonderful advancement of science."

Such musings have kicked up controversy on both sides of the ethical divide. Some fundamentalists are convinced that even a homosexual "tendency" is a deliberate sinful choice uninfluenced by biological factors. Some homosexual activists insist that it would be “cultural genocide” to try to correct a baby’s sexual predisposition. And People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, without taking a stand on humans, argues straight out that rams have a right to be gay.

It’s all theoretical, because so far no “gay gene” has been found; and no one is even close to a consensus about the ways in which hormonal and environmental facts may influence human gender identity and sexual orientation.

Nevertheless, Charles Roselli, the Oregon sheep project's lead scientist, found that a crucial part of homosexual rams’ brains --- the "sexually dimorphic nucleus" --- looks more like a ewe's than like a straight ram's. Roselli says that his research "strongly suggests that sexual preference is biologically determined in animals, and possibly in humans.”

At one time, homosexual activists eagerly sought evidence that sexual orientation is inborn. If same-sex attraction is innate, they claimed, acting on this attraction is not morally objectionable. But now some activists fear that if a homosexual tendency is diagnosable before birth, parents could eliminate homosexual offspring either by aborting babies who carry a “gay” biological marker or by genetically manipulating the embryo.

The Catholic Church teaches that abortion, embryo "selection," or genetic manipulation would be gravely morally wrong under any circumstances. But if there were a genuinely therapeutic treatment --- say, a hormone patch on the pregnant mother's abdomen --- which would promote the baby's normal sexual development, Catholic ethicists would agree with Baptist Mohler that this is acceptable as, for instance, prenatal blood transfusions, which have become common in the past 20 years.

"All babies --- all of them --- need acceptance, love and care," insists Mohler. "If 'care' involves a cure of an unhealthy prenatal condition, how can you see that as anything but a blessing?"

Hey, while they're at it maybe they could find a way to manipulate fetal hormones to prevent other sins, like say: Murder, that should be first on the list wouldn't you think? Adultery Any one of the Paraphilias i.e. Pedophilia, Necrophilia, Lying, I swear this is genetically linked Stealing Blaspheming Come on! This is abominable! God created each and every single one of us in His likeness and image. He knit us together in our mother's womb and we are wonderfully and powerfully made. He gives each of us "free will" to chose. Now mankind is trying to use technology to "eradicate" sin? in the name of "health"? This should never be considered "ethical" by the Church.

When I read this opinion, I knew that the holy trinity had traded places with the prince of darkness. Rue the day, for you 'Christians' are really the Satanists. And, your opinion on this subject shows you to be unholy, ungodly, and unworthy of Jesus' agape love. Shame on your very dark souls. The church of Jesus Christ knows you not.

Finally the "[homosexual] gene" shuck is being seen for the red herring it is. We treat diabetes, heart disease, cancer, tuberous sclerosis, and innumerable diseases that have a genetic component. If the choice to engage in sodomy has a genetic component --and so far there is no convincing scientific evidence it does-- the disease needs to be treated.

I have often wondered about the impact of synthetic estrogens from the birth control pills so widely used throughout the world. What is their impact on our water systems? our enviornment? our unborn children? In an article in the May/June 2006 issue of Family Foundations, Mark LeChevalier, PhD, writes about the potent effect that even low levels of estrogine have on endocrine systems. It is a fascinating look at how we may be causing sex changes in aquatic animals due to the inability of our wastewater plants to screen out these estrogens. Is it a far leap to wonder if all this estrogen in the ecosphere has had a deleterious effect upon the human population. There may be no homosexual gene but there may be homosexuals caused by the pharmaceutical leftover estrogens in our water systems. Think about it. It's something to ponder, and no, I'm not drinking Kool Aid, folks but I have to drink the water.

Jim Newman from the university conducting the sheep research. This article is wrong. The researchers are not trying to "cure" homosexuality. The New York Times, TIME Magazine, ABC News and many others have gotten this fact right. Why has your publication chosen to make false claims about the research? It appears that your reporter is more interested in politicizing research than in reporting facts

Editor's Response to Mr. Newman:
I apologize for the incomplete, and thus inaccurate, account we originally provided on this story. I have altered the article to better reflect what Mr. Newman indicated about the intention of the research.

However, the TIME Magazine story cited by Mr. Newman, while indicating that researchers are not seeking a cure per se for homosexuality does indicate that they have tried to alter sexuality in sheep --- an activity which, if successful, could lead to a "cure" for homosexuality. The passage from TIME is below.

Charles Roselli of Oregon Health & Science University "says he and his colleagues never had any intention of creating a drug that will turn people straight. And while they have examined whether sheep sexuality can be altered with various treatments, that's not the sole point of their work. Instead, like many other scientists over the past two decades, they are conducting basic research into the nature of sexuality by manipulating hormones in animals. (Such experiments were done on zebra finches--to see if females would pair with other females--as long ago as 1988.) A colleague of Roselli's, Fredrick Stormshak of Oregon State, says a means of identifying gay sheep would be useful to breeders who need to ensure that males will reproduce, but the team hasn't had much success. In its most recent experiments, the group used drugs to block the action of a hormone thought to play a role in making most sheep straight (in other words, this test was designed to produce more homosexual sex, not less). But the results were inconclusive."

"Some homosexual activists insist that it would be “cultural genocide” to try to correct a baby’s sexual predisposition" And yet in this country we abort 85% of Down's Syndrome babies...who speaks about that genocide?? Oh yes, I forgot, some animals are more equal than others...(this is a reference to 'Animal Farm')

The College of Cardinal's elected a Hitler Youth alumnus as pope. As a Cardinal Benedict developed the theology necessary to justify eradicating homosexual orientation. How can we be surprised when his Third Reich become mainstream?

Has it ever occurred to anyone that if humans exhibit a biologically driven variation in sexual orientation, gay people might be part of God's plan for humanity? This appears to be one more case where we paint ourselves into a corner with the "every sperm is sacred" approach to sexuality, with some very destructive results.

"If there are ways of detecting diseases or disorders of children in the womb, and a way of treating them that respected the dignity of the child and mother, it would be a wonderful advancement of science." This appears to be an abrupt U-turn in Catholic thinking about homosexuality, but you might want to take a good hard look at where it leads. Start with the premise that homosexuals are immoral. Accept the scientific evidence that sexual orientation is part of an individual's biological makeup, which sort of muddles the role of morality in the equation. Look for ways to diagnose and treat the disorder pre-natally, because, well, you know, it's immoral. Do they teach logic at AMU? And if it can be diagnosed but not treated, we can always... Don't think of it as abortion, think of it as smoothing the path of the soul of the evil fetus straight to Hell without bothering the rest of us with that intervening wretched time on earth. The charge of genocide should come as no surprise. When we play with the characteristics that make us human, without a clear-headed investigation into why those characteristics exist, we're taking God's role, and muffing it badly.

Maybe we should start research to see what causes the predisposition that causes one to align themselves with radical fearfull nonexcepting of natural difference religious fundamentalizm and then try to correct that in the womb before it grows up to persecute those around them that don't feel or believe the way that they do. lol

If homosexuality was part of Gods plan then Sodom and Gommorrah was also Gods plan. If homosexuality is to be justified then all who practice it and all who justify it shall pay the consequances. It is un-natural and i feel most people are socialized into it not born into it.

All that is said or done cannot change the modern major-science verdict on homosexuality, it is a normal and natural psycho-biological variant of sexuality, both humanly and animalially. Calling this "hormonal imbalance," as the article does, doesn't help anyone, because scientifically it isn't true. Also, taking Biblical passages out of context doesn't help either.

Hmm, interesting. If sexual preference is biologically determined in in humans, then perhaps pedophilia and bestiality is also a part of Gods plan. Why stop there? We can blame God for rape and incest as well.

Wait a minute, this article is from March of 07. Why are we even discussing this?

Posted Thursday, October 09, 2008 1:56 PM By Grisha
Dai Yoshida ~ I in fact hadn't seen this one. After reading it now, I've got to say that there is a real danger that the Law of Unintended Consequences will apply. That is, that science will someday be able to determine the sexuality of a child in the womb, offer a "cure" for it. This would result in who-knows-how-many more abortions. Just because we can discover something doesn't necessary men we should.
