“Most radical abortion legislation in U.S. history”

‘Catholic’ co-sponsors of ‘Freedom of Choice Act’ win easy reelection

Nine self-described Catholics were easily reelected to the U.S. House of Representatives from California last Tuesday – and they all have something in common, other than being Democrats: each is a co-sponsor of the federal “Freedom of Choice Act.”

President-elect Barack Obama has promised to sign the measure into law should it pass Congress, telling a group of Planned Parenthood supporters in July 2007, “The first thing I’d do as president is sign the Freedom of Choice Act.”

The bill, known by the acronym FOCA, has been vigorously opposed by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, which has repeatedly lobbied members of Congress against its passage. FOCA would eliminate virtually all restrictions on abortion adopted by various state legislatures.

On Sept. 30, the USCCB’s Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities issued a statement urging Catholics to oppose FOCA, calling it “the most radical abortion legislation in U.S. history.” The bishops’ statement said the bill would “invalidate laws to protect a woman from unsafe abortion clinics and to ensure that she is informed about abortion,” would require taxpayer funding for abortions, would obligate states to permit partial-birth and other late-term abortions, would require states to allow abortions to be performed by non-physicians, would eliminate ‘conscientious objection’ rights of doctors and other healthcare workers who oppose abortion, and would nullify state-enacted parental consent and notification laws when minors seek an abortion.

In a statement prepared for Respect Life Sunday (Oct. 5, 2008), Cardinal Justin Rigali, chairman of the USCCB’s Committee on Pro-Life Activities, said, “Today, however, we face the threat of a federal bill that, if enacted, would obliterate virtually all the gains of the past 35 years and cause the abortion rate to skyrocket. The ‘Freedom of Choice Act’ (FOCA) has many Congressional sponsors, some of whom have pledged to act swiftly to help enact this proposed legislation when Congress reconvenes in January.

“FOCA establishes abortion as a ‘fundamental right’ throughout the nine months of pregnancy, and forbids any law or policy that could ‘interfere’ with that right or ‘discriminate’ against it in public funding and programs,” said the cardinal. “If FOCA became law, hundreds of reasonable, widely supported, and constitutionally sound abortion regulations now in place would be invalidated… We cannot allow this to happen.”

On Sept. 19, Cardinal Rigali sent a letter to all members of Congress, warning against enactment of FOCA. “Despite its deceptive title,” he wrote, “FOCA would deprive the American people in all 50 states of the freedom they now have to enact modest restraints and regulations on the abortion industry. FOCA would coerce all Americans into subsidizing and promoting abortion with their tax dollars. And FOCA would counteract any and all sincere efforts by government to reduce abortions in our country.” Added the cardinal, “No one who sponsors or supports legislation like FOCA can credibly claim to be part of a good-faith discussion on how to reduce abortions.”

Apparently, the Church’s position on FOCA is of little significance to the nine “Catholic” members of Congress from California who cruised to reelection on Nov. 4. The “Catholic” co-sponsors from California include: Rep. Loretta Sánchez, D-Garden Grove; Rep. Linda Sánchez, D- Lakewood; Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Palo Alto; Rep. Hilda Solis, D-El Monte; Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena; Rep. Rep. Ellen Tauscher, D-Walnut Creek; Rep. Dianne Watson, D-Los Angeles; Rep. George Miller, D-Martinez; and Rep. Grace Napolitano, D-Norwalk. Each won reelection by margins ranging from 65.5% to 87.7%.

Since the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) would establish prenatal infanticide as a "fundamental right" from conception to term of delivery, it should be opposed on fundamental grounds. What are those grounds? "There is no doubt that at common law the destruction of an infant unborn is a high misdemeanor, and at an earlier period it seems to have been deemed murder" (1 Francis Wharton, _The Criminal Law of the United States_ (5th rev. ed. 1861). In many matters, Congress is free to alter and even abrogate the common law, but not when the right of preborn infants to life is at stake; and not when the word "person" in the Constitution--rightly interpreted--includes preborn infants within the compass of humanity.

Trading your imortal soul to the devil to get elected seems to be the thing to do in good old California. Obamafornia has not only hit the slippery slope but is rapidly approaching the bottomless pit from which there is no return. P.S. dress for warm weather I've heard it do get hot down there.

Pray and fight against the party of death and its Nazi-like policies, which say kill all those who we define as not being human and are a "punishment" from a sinful lifestyle. Just wait, your local "unproductive" and money-draining sick elderly person will be next with something named similarly, like "FOMD" - freedom of a merciful death. Then we'll get "FFHC" - freedom from hate crimes, which will jail (or worse) all of us who speak natural law or God's Truth. FOCA is simply more lies of claiming evil to be a "right" - newspeak in action. I would recommend everyone (re)read "1984" to see it in action now. If people ever wondered how Hitler did what he did, just look around to see it happening again. Money grubbing godless societies all have the same fate. Pray the Rosary, do more Adoration, and fight for Truth.

For over thirty five years pro-life Catholics have been beggin their bishops to speak loudly and to discipline their pro-abortion flock, especially the politicians. This year too few, too late did so. It ispast time for excommunication.

Time for the Bishops to Stand UP, and state clearly You Cannot support Abortion and be Catholic. Pray for our bishops, that they would enforce Canon 915!

We as Catholics need to admit that is time we get of our butts and act like a Catholic. The church must deny Eucharist to these abortion supporters, we must get rid of pro-choice staff at churches, and we must start taking a pro-life position at church. We have been lukewarm in our churches and not vocal enough. Not only parishioners will then become lukewarm but when the society sees that we give communion to pro abortion supporters and hardly discuss the issue at church then society will think we don't take abortion seriously.

Posted Monday, November 10, 2008 8:25 AM By BJ
Why can't they be told by their Bishops that they have excommunicated themselves from the teachings of Christ and His church. No drama.... just not members of the Catholic church by their own 'choice' to reject basic Biblical teachings and not therefore in a position to sow more confusion and lead even more souls to the gates destruction.

Now you Catholic Bishops seem to be taking a courageous stand against abortion. You missed your chance to do all you could to keep Obama from the White House. Didn't you know realize this would happen? I am beginning to wonder if you really committed to the Gospel or if you have another agenda. If so, I pray God have mercy on you.

All should be excommunicated immediately for sponsoring such a hideous bill that goes against all Catholic teaching.

Posted Monday, November 10, 2008 9:53 AM By John70
What is the penalty these Godless politicians pay for their crime? I believe with all my heart that these people are every bit as guilty of murder as the the abortionist who rips a child from a mothers womb! As for the so-called "Catholic" who votes for these enablers, they are no better. Meanwhile our Bishops, with feet of clay and spines of jello, are having their meeting and trying to decide how to address this crime without "offending" these creatures! What great leaders, with a few exceptions, we have leading us.

We had about 100 Bishops speak out quite strongly, but not until Pelosi and Biden tried to rewrite the Gospels, about 20 of those Bishops have consistently been in God's corner on the issues that have destroyed America, yes I said destroyed, if you have problem believing that think of 50 million slaughtered babies, voters in Washington and Oregon voting to murder the aged or others who they do not fit into their idea of who should live in their States. The sodomites with their perverted agenda's, much of it in our schools, and more coming thanks to Pelosi, Biden, Reid and Hussien along with their many so called Catholic friends. Wonder how may Bishops and Priests rejoiced at Hussiens election, we do know that around 200 Bishops were very quiet, we do know that the pathetic piece of paper the USCCB put out on forming our concience opened the door for many to vote for Hussien. These 9 creeps will most likely NEVER ON EARTH be dealth with, neither will Bishops who liberally go along with them, but all of them will face another Judge who might not be to happy with their EVIL. Flood your United States Senators and House Representatives with calls against FOCA, The Freedom of Choice Act. These unborn babies are being torn apart limb by limb with out anesthetic, or their skin burned off with saline injections. It is about time we said so.

Posted Monday, November 10, 2008 1:45 PM By Ray'C55
If the USCCB is really serious about protesting this bill they should first enforce the laws of the church and suspend bishops and priests who give the Eucharist to pro-abortion politicians and any other celebrity who call themselves catholic. Until we clean our house first we cannot expect others to follow our lead.

All of these California folks have as their metropolitan Archbishop Roger Cardinal Mahoney. Will the Cardinal speak? Of course not. The article left out another probably yes vot, that of Congressman Jim Costa (D-Fresno), an alleged Catholic from the diocese of Fresno. Bishop John Steinbock will jump in the phot op but will remain silent on the yes vote to kill children.

Rome knows how bad it is in the United States. They are waiting for the laity. Many wealthy people have stopped donating money to the Mission at San Juan Capistrano. Father Art Holquin has also driven out many faithful Catholics. They need to return and defend the true teachings of the Church. The wolves bank on the fact that people will leave. They know they will then have the full support of the misguided or complacent sheep in their flock. The complaints are being heard but the loss of money speaks the loudest to false shepherds. The most disobedient Diocese of Orange California just helped the most radical pro-death Representatives in plotting to destroy more unborn children.

I think WE ALL should start letter writing to our Senators and our Representatives. We can't just sit here in front of computers and complain. We need to let them hear our voices. And spread the news around. With God's help, we can fight down FOCA!

All I Can say to these California representatives in Congress is..why don't you just join another religion. Our Holy Mother Church does not want you proposing legislation such as the Freedom of Choice Act. We don't need your unnecessary baggage when true Catholics believe in life.

Let us face it the fact that many of these people who are voting for these pro-abort politicians are doing so to cover up their own sins. It is the "now we got caught so let's kill the kid routine." I have seen it over and over again. It is done by Catholics as well as nonCatholics.

I am sorry to see that there are CCD bloggers who proceed as if the election were not over; who give themselves license to use denunciatory language against President-elect Barack Obama rather than appeal to him to redeem his presidency by rejecting the abortocratism of a major faction within his Party. The Jamaican-American/Catholic poet Claude McKay (1889-1948) was right to urge all Americans to reject the "pagan isms" the first hallmark of which is contempt for human life if that life should prove inconvenient.

Excommunication means nothing to "catholic" legislators. In their minds they are gods. The only thing they understand is winning the next election. Every day an additional 3,000 murdered children demand we vote these bums out of office and overturn the damage they've done to our country and the world.

The article provides a list of each of the "Catholic" pro-abortion legislators and where they come from. Check to see who your local "Cath-pro-abort" legislator is and then find out to which diocese he/she belongs. The bishop of that diocese has pastoral responsibility in this matter. An informed and courteous letter that local bishop might be of help.

I am surprised to see the Latino names here. I thought most Latinos were pro-life even though Planned Parenthood agressively courts Latinos. Are Loretta and Linda Sanchez Catholics? Do they care about the children? Do they care about those that would destroy Latino children? If they are Catholic perhaps they should go on a pilgrimage to Rome to see the Pope. Catholic Democrats need to stick together.

There is one thing about Republicans, Libertarians and Independent candidates and politicians. Even though some of them might vote for abortion, they have the decency not to tax me and others for the murder of the unborn. The huge majority of the Democrats have no such decency.

Abortion is human sacrifice that is desired and inspired by Satan. All those who promote it are his followers - the abortionists are his high priests. This is a battle against spiritual evil which has become very powerful. The only way to battle it is through spiritual warfare - the Traditional Mass and the Rosary are our most powerful weapons, which is why Satan has attacked these two forms of prayer so vigorously in the last 4 decades. Look at how he tried to "renovate" churches by destroying High altars and altar rails, by convincing people they no longer have to kneel to receive their Lord... The Pope knows the power of the Traditional Mass against the evil in our midst, which is why he freed it from its chains. Please, please pray the Rosary daily and promote the Traditional Mass at your parishes. If there is one offered near you, support it with time and money and talent, but most of all with your prayerful attendance at the Holy Sacrifice. It is only the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass that can end the most unholy sacrifice of abortion and the other evils so rampant throughout the world...

Because, Maguire, your vision stops at the fringe of the market place, you imagine that others can see no further. But as for politics, you've hit the nail on the head, which is that too many people dwell on the two branches of the government political party, instead of doing what is right in the sight of God.

Loretta and Linda are both registered as Catholics. Neither one really legally can use the name "Sanchez" but when you are a liberal, very liberal, Demoncrat, what is a little deception like using your mother's maiden name instead of your married names as your last names. When Loretta Sanchez Brixey first ran for public office in the City of Anaheim, she ran and lost using her real name and she ran as a Republican. Then she came to "know" Demoncrat Mayor Tom Dailey, and I am told he advised her to switch Parties and to switch from pro-life to pro-death! By the way, some prominent priests of the Diocese of Orange, including the former vocations director, have given heavily to Loretta's campaigns! God bless, yours in Their Hearts, Kenneth M. Fisher, Founder & Chairman Concerned Roman Catholics of America, Inc.

Crusader, I'm glad your and others are using point blank language to describe the situation. One insight on the high altars: They were taken away from churches but not from secular institutions: The result has been that man whose intrinsic nature is to bow before great power, then has nowhere to bow to God and ends up bowing before government officials.

" It is the "now we got caught so let's kill the kid routine." Intriguing phrase, Anne T. I think more and more people are beginning to "see" with spiritual eyes the actual nature of abortion ... and are beginning to put it in straight forward terms, instead of couching it in such politically correct and watered down ways. It is a religious human sacrifice to the devil. This fact may not be intended by each individual participating in an abortion, but it is in fact exactly what they are doing, a religious sacrifice to the devil.

John F. Macguire, I am concerned that someone as bright as you are stated, " I am sorry that bloggers are still proceeding to talk about the election after it is over." Since the purpose of CCD is to help everyone join the "permanent elect" in heaven through love and obedience to Christ's Church, it is important to correct error and help one another. Since none of us are in heaven yet, the real election not over until your life is over. Hopefully there will be enough evidence to show that we always campaigned for God and not His opponent with misleading slogans that support mortal sin. A truthful, loving and obedient campaign is how you get voted into the elect.

Mark from PA: Maybe you could go on this pilgrimage also. The Holy Father would tell you that there is no such thing as a Catholic Democrat. Obama, as we all know, has voted for allowing babies of botched abortions to die agonizing deaths in a cold metal pan and all alone. WWJD-What would Jesus do? I know he would not allow anyone into Heaven who would allow this barbaric act to be allowed on His little children. You do not allow anything to happen to His little ones, and look what this barbarian wants to do. Woe to him or anyone who supports him, who hurts in any way His little children!

I hate to say it but most Latino's that come into the states pretty much give up their roots of family values, they become the most liberal people I come accross. I being hispanic, I get sad to see that more and more latino's are becoming very modern and liberal here in the USA. Most of them are Democrats and pretty much embrace all the liberal views of the Democratic party. Just a few day before the election, I showed a few latino's the views of Obama on abortion and how extreme they were, they refused to listen and still wanted to vote for him. I should of showed them the pictures of aborted babies of all stages, maybe that would of helped. A lot of them are in denial of the evils of the Democratic party. Pretty sad.

In reply to Thomas R.: If "Catholic democrat = oxymoron," why would Archbishop Chaput have encouraged Catholics "within both parties" to fight the good fight?

Posted Tuesday, November 11, 2008 3:50 PM By Mark from PA
Thomas, I was a pro-life Republican, now I am a pro-life Democrat. My Democratic Congressman and Democratic US Senator are both pro-life Catholics. I don't agree 100% with either party in truth. Neither party is a Catholic party. Perhaps Catholics should be independents but in my state independents cannot vote in primaries so it is better for Catholics here to belong to either the Democratic or Republican party.

Posted Tuesday, November 11, 2008 4:09 PM By Maria C
Kenneth M. Fisher I share those feelings too. It is a pity because this saddens me. I will never forget my beautiful Catholic grandmother who was very conservative and her beautiful catholic ways, they were so humble and so charitable. Unfortunitely those beautiful hispanic's are disapearing so much. I know that we still have many good latino's fighting the good fight but unfortunitely the bad outweight the good ones, there are to many in high places that have traded in their heritage for what they think is American. They want so bad to fit in this country that they have become so modern and lack backbone. If only they knew that to be truly a USA citizen, it is truly to be conservative and honor God in all that we do in our freedom. I love our country, I am proud to be a USA citizen and for our founding fathers who made this country a Christian country (Catholic or non Catholic), I hope that people will start to see the Democratic Party for what it truly is, a bunch of traitors to their country, a bunch of liberals who so much want to imitate values that are so opposite from good morals that this country was founded on. I love our country but the liberals want to make this country so much like a socialist country not very much far from the roots of communist. They are not far from Hitlers views in my oppinion.

JSL, King David had Uriah the Hittite killed when he got caught in his adultery. I use the expression "now we got caught so let's kill the kid routine" from what I saw starting in the sixties. After the birthcontrol pill came into use, I saw woman after woman and man after man, cheating on their spouses with their so-called friend's and other people's spouses. They thought they were safe with the pill. When they found out they were not, they took to abortion. Thence "the kill the kid routine". It is a good way to get rid of the evidence of one's infidelity, with one exception--the God Lord knows everything we do or do not do. Thus also the hatred for women such as Palin. Instead of repenting and becoming pro-life, they want to bring her down to their level. I pray they don't.

Posted Tuesday, November 11, 2008 6:13 PM By JLS
PA, that's nonsense. If you want to vote independent, then register in one or another version of the government party in the primaries and vote against the strongest candidate. Then write in or vote independent. Your idea is ridiculous, and reflects the deep problem with the public ... stop numbing your mind on TV and start reading Magisterial documents or writings of the Saints ... do something other than give up.

Posted Tuesday, November 11, 2008 8:49 PM By JLS
Anne T., to clarify, Uriah was not the adulterer, but King David. Uriah was the husband who was cheated on. He was also David's general, and fighting a war for David at the time. Solomon was born out of that triste and although God forgave David for his adultry, nevertheless allowed the consequences of that sin to go forward. To note is the level of gravity so different between those two sins. God looked at the adultry far more gravely than at the murder. The consequences stemmed from the adultry, as I remember it. Murder is bad, but how often the prophets dissed adultry and idolatry compared to murder is significant. Idolatry and adultry attack God, whereas murder is modeled by Cain. God did not execute Cain, but He did have the idolaters and adulterers executed. I take this preponderant pattern to suggest that God is more furious at imposters than with killers. I'm not sure why this is, but I think it's because He is "a jealous God", as Scripture repeats often.

I think the Church needs to be firm with pro-choice Catholics. Also, it should re-iterate it's position against artificial birth control. The church should educate it's members that even the pill does act as an abortificant, even though it may not always work in that way. I think many "pro-life" Cathollics take the pill. The Church should mention the increasingly popular vasectomies and tubal ligations done by many Catholics. Many Catholics would leave, but I trust that eventually, perhaps much later, more people will come to the Church when it speaks the truth loud and clear. Let us be purified.

Thanks, JLS. Under the title of Bathsheba about a year or two ago, I found a website by a man who said he was Jewish. He did a real "hatchet job" on poor Uriah the Hittite. He so twisted the story that he had Uriah the Hittite the culprit, and David almost completely innocent, even though the Bible gave Samuel's condemnation of what David had done. I sent it to a friend of mine and she, as I did, immediately knew that this guy was defending polygamy and probably was a polygamist.

Kenneth Fisher, Senator Bob Casey is our pro-life Senator. His father Gov. Robert Casey was a pro-life governor who was denied the right to speak at the Democratic Convention in 1992. He is the only Democrat that I ever voted for governor of our state. He ran against pro-abortion Republicans. One of the major reasons that I voted for Casey was his pro-life stands. I also voted for our previous Senator Rick Santorum in his elections because he was strongly pro-life. I am a ticket splitter.

I witnessed an interview on Fox News, Cavuto interviewing a bishop from the conference in D. C. The wiggling and ducking regarding how to vote and holding the politicians accountable was maddening and telling. We can forget the Democrats and Obama...they are paid off by the very lucrative money generated by abortion. . NO, its time we bombarded the Bishops to stand and fight. Start now, start daily....e-mail, write, phone, demonstrate, get in their faces at every level. They are pharises. And send your money to a good charity, not your church.

Mary I agree, we need to put pressure on our bishops to make a stand on what is true and Moral. I agree. I have been putting the pressure on some of the priests from churches that I hardly go to because the church that I attend regularly is truly doing their job but there are other lukewarm priests and they are the ones we need to remind them kindly to lead Christ's flock.

Anne T., the Bible story is plain and straight forward as you say. It was written many centuries before Christ. David lived about 1000 B.C. The lesson of the story was meant for Jews to understand for a thousand years before Christianity, and for Christians to understand about sin and forgiveness, remorse and penance, and the consequences of sin. Its greatest lesson perhaps is humility, demonstrated by King David, who had no earthly peers. It was a contest between worldly power and Godly power, and David submitted to God. Uriah was killed much like Abel was killed by Cain, who disobeyed God and then wouldn't accept his place in life. These stories are profound and those who spin them otherwise are shallow people. The account is not about polygamy, which was lawful in those times, but about sin and redemption, humility and vanity. David's son, Solomon, was not acting unlawfully in having hundreds of wives and concubines, but in his indulgence in the strange religions of some of them. Jesus speaks about polygamy in the Gospel, about how it was allowed in Moses' time because of the hardness of heart of man, but with His advent, that indulgence was closed. Man now has no excuse for hardness of heart, which is softened by faith. Uriah had no guilt deserving of a death warrant given by King David, but was slaughtered in his loyalty to God and to his king, by his king. Jews today are constrained from living out the Torah. Even in their own nation they cannot live by this Law given by Moses, so they have to liberalize it.

Fathering demands explaining to the son, directing the son, teaching the son ... not throwing him into the water to see if he'll sink or swim, which tends to the norm in our society today.

Pray for our souls: Indulgenced Prayer before a Crucifix Behold, O kind and most sweet Jesus, I cast myself upon my knees in Thy sight, and with the most fervent desire of my soul I pray and beseech Thee that Thou wouldst impress upon my heart lively sentiments of faith, hope and charity, with a true contrition for my sins and a firm purpose of amendment; whilst with deep affection and grief of soul I ponder within myself and mentally contemplate Thy five most precious wounds, having before my eyes the words which long ago David the prophet put in Thy mouth concerning Thee: They have pierced My hands and My feet, they have numbered all My bones (Ps. 21.17,18)
