Estrogen overload

Widespread use of birth control pills harming the environment

Millions of women in the United States ingest excess estrogen every day in the form of birth control pills. Within 24 hours, the effluent from those 12 million doses ends up in our sewage systems. And then?

The April 17 Scientific American reported results of a study warning that “many streams, rivers and lakes already bear warning signs that the fish caught within them may also be carrying enough chemicals that mimic the female hormone estrogen to cause breast cancer cells to grow.”

“Fish are really a sentinel, just like canaries in the coal mine 100 years ago,” says Conrad Volz, co-director of exposure assessment at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute's Center for Environmental Ecology. “We need to pay attention to chemicals that are estrogenic in nature, because they find their way back into the water we all use.”

According to the Freshwater Institute’s Fisheries and Oceans section, “The potent synthetic estrogens excreted by women taking hormone replacement therapy or birth control pills are not completely broken down in the sewage treatment process and are discharged into waterways.”

While cautioning that the exact process of hormonal confusion is not yet clear, the Scientific American article continued, “But the [estrogenic] effects on the fish themselves were clear: the gender of nine of the fish [tested] could not be determined.”

“Increased estrogenic active substances in the water are changing males so that they are indistinguishable from females,” Volz found. “There are eggs in male gonads as well as males are secreting a yolk sac protein. Males aren't supposed to be making egg stuff.”

Around January 25th of this year, my pastor, Fr. Paul Weinberger of the Diocese of Dallas, Greenville, Texas wrote the article below, which should be of great interest in relation to the subject at hand.******Fr. Weinberger writes: Fr. Paul Weinberger writes: Today's Dallas Morning News had a wire story about companies in this country which have tainted the rivers with mercury. If industry pollutes, now with the EPA, they must clean it up. It was a short story from the wire services, nothing long or involved. Recall the demands made on EXXON after the Valdez spilled oil - they had to pay for the cleanup. That eventually was passed on to the people at the pump in higher prices. When you buy new tires in the USA, there is a charge for recycling the old tires. The same goes for freon in the car's A/C. The charge is passed on to the person buying the tires or the freon. There is a story in today's news about doctors who believe that the oral contraceptive, also known as "The Pill" needs to be strengthened. Evidently some women are still getting pregnant and they believe that the dosage of "The Pill" must be increased. What if the companies which manufacture the contraceptive pill had to pass on a surcharge to women who bought oral contraceptive pill for environmental cleanup, awareness would be raised and also tighter restrictions on what goes into our lakes and rivers. Countless studies have been found that relate how fish and frogs have mutated due to the pill which reaches rivers and lakes through waste water treatment facilities. The female hormones have made the frogs disfigured, some growing extra legs (the French will love this!) and the fish having the equivalent of a sex-change, from male to female. Our tender planet must be protected. If this is attempted it could put more drag on the pharmaceutical companies. Why are they any different from clear cut coal miners who level whole mountains, clogging streams and rivers with valuable topsoil. Ecologists need to begin fighting the pharmaceutical companies to clean up their act. This cost which is damaging the water supply must be addressed. We have kn

The mainstream press, which is liberal, won't touch this issue with a 10-foot pole!

There are plenty of warning signs out there, but I'm afraid that as a society we're slow to pick up on it because, you know, we "can't live" without hormonal contraceptives (and that's not only 'The Pill," but also vaginal, transdermal, injected or implanted hormones), plus there's a politically powerful movement out there rather stupidly affirming a rise in transgenderism, rather than recognizing that the sources of life are being sabotaged, not just for human societies, but for many other species as well. /rant

Combine this with the demographic suicide being committed in Europe, Canada, and (to a lesser extent,) North America, and you see what happens when Man messes with the province of God. The Church comes out smelling like a rose in this story.

Its the end times, dearie, and don't you think it ain't. God help us all. Pray always....and keep you're gaze fixed upward....your salvation comes from above.

If you think ths is bad....do some research into the estrogen levels in the effluance from your average dairy farm. Those cows are pumped so full of the stuff its coming out of them and going right into our lakes, streams drinking water etc.

I know you're speaking metaphorically about the Church pretty much predicting all that has befallen us b/c of the widespread use of contraception (esp. the kind described in the article), but whether or not The Church comes out smelling like a rose is immaterial. No one in the world with any political influence or influence in the media would let that happen in a million years! We human beings are destroying ourselves in many ways: physically, morally, spiritually... all because "we wanna" do whatever we want w/o consequence. At the rate we're going, God won't even have to bring forth "the end of the world," we'll take care of that for Him. He'll just show up to make the final judgement! Oh, I just thought of something else: I wonder what the environmentalists who hang out with Al Gore have to say about THIS "inconvenient truth?" I'm sure whatever it is, it's pretty lofty!

The painful truth is that even if these facts were broadly published, we have become so selfish and self-absorbed that I think a lot of men and women would not care enough to change their behavior.

There is always consequences to sin. Birth control pills are not good for women (does cause chemical abortions) or fish. We are polluting our waters with hormones. God have mercy on us.

We'll be talking about the consequences of the morning after pill in 15 years when the 30 somethings look back to their adolescence with regret and wonder why they were not protected by adults!

Posted Tuesday, May 01, 2007 3:40 PM By Jeanne Murphy
The comments about charging an extra surcharge for clean-up was an excellent idea. Sadly, taking the pill is "policically correct", so this will never be done. The pill is "protected" from any public scrutiny just as is abortion and the link between abortion and breast cancer. The pro-death people just keep insisting there is no connection.

God is trying to tell us something. Are we listening?

One good shines from all of this. If the true Catholics continue to have babies and the "birth control lovers" continue to use the pill, sooner or later good will prevail because of "self-destruction". Praise be to God!

End times, you say, Kathy? Well, I guess we should just run away and stop hoping to bring people to Christ or build a civilization of love.

This is not new info. by any means. This has been known for a number of years. And yes, the mainstream press has carried this story before. As another reader pointed out, agriculture is not innocent in polluting the environment with hormones. We are doing a great deal of damage to our environment in a great multitude of ways. This is not really any different than the other host of toxic chemicals that are routinely being dumped into our water through the careless dumping done by industry and individuals. Rather than demonizing the birth control pill, do what you personally can to prevent pollution in all its forms. That includes flushing your old medications down the toilet and driving vehicles that consume fossil fuels.

Hi from Belgium. I don't know much about California, but over here, quite a large number of houses are using septing tanks, especially out in the countryside. I guess that solves part of the problem by reducing the amount of hormones going into our streams.

Posted Thursday, May 03, 2007 11:46 AM By Deb Fox
Interesting article and comments. In light of this study, perhaps another should be done on the impact of hormones on the confusion surrounding 'gender identity'. I find it very curious that there is such an explosion of homosexual tendencies, not to mention transgenderism. Could it be that the Church -- which forbids both contraception and unnatural sexual relations -- is right after all? Of course it is! No wonder there's such a backlash against it from those who want to do their own thing!

I wonder if anyone else is worried about the fact that these "it" fish might not be able to reproduce and soon we won't have to worry about the affect of hormones on them (because there won't be any).

If you are looking for correlation of this article, read "Our Stolen Future" by Theo Colborn, Dianne Dumanoski, and John Peterson Myers, ("two leading environmental scientists and an award-winning environmental journalist" as the book jacket says) published by Penguin, 1996. Incidentally, the Forward to this book is written by Al Gore.

i miscarried my seventh child in may - and it looks like it is because of estrogen dominance - most likely caused by estrogens in the water where we live. I don't use any birth control, we rarely have any drugs (over the counter or prescription) in the house, we eat organic and very healthy, grind and sprout our own grain. And yet these 12 million women who choose voluntary chemical castration have caused the death of my baby.

If it's "their" business, then why are these sex-obsessed women putting fake hormones into MY body? Having strange substances not under my control in my body has always been one of my phobias. I don't even like headache pills.

And now let's see a study about the effect of hormone-like substances added to the water supply through use of chemicals in manufacturing, which are significantly more prevalent than the low, low levels of estrogen left over from birth control (in regards to birth control getting stronger, it is actually significantly weaker than it was thirty years ago. New advances have allowed scientists to be more accurate, requiring lower doses of hormones). Birth control genuinely helps people, improving and saving lives on a daily basis; it is a miracle. Can you say the same for the harsh chemicals released into the air and water by industry in this country?

This speaks to the need for change. Females of all ages must take serious knowing themselves and how their body works. FEMCal is a female charting calendar that teaches how to know naturally without pills, when conception is possible. Businesses need to sponsor the free distribution of FEMCal, so that the change can be expediant. For information http://lunaqueen.angelfire.com
