Distinguished record?

University president who brought feminist theologians and pro-abortion commencement speakers to Catholic university in LA gets accolade from Cardinal Mahony

Cardinal Roger Mahony has honored Jesuit Fr. Robert Lawton, president of Loyola Marymount University of Los Angeles, as one of the recipients of the 2008 Cardinal’s Award, according to a story in the Sept. 21 edition of the Tidings, the weekly newspaper of the Los Angeles archdiocese.

Since 1999, Lawton has had “the vision to integrate the university into all aspects of community life of Los Angeles,” said the Tidings’ article.

Under Lawton, the archdiocese and the university have enjoyed amicable relations. With the archdiocese’s Hindu-Catholic Dialogue, the university offered an April 2005 symposium featuring “ecofeminist” Rosemary Radford Ruether, who proposes calling God “Gaia,” the Roman Mother Earth goddess. In 2004 the university offered a symposium at which speaker Fr. Michael Crosby called celibacy “a system of power, of patriarchy.”

In 2002, the archdiocese’s office of religious education teamed with the university to sponsor a talk by Michael Morwood, whose book, Tomorrow’s Catholic, Melbourne, Australia Archbishop George Pell has condemned as containing serious errors. At his Los Angeles talk, Morwood argued that the Church’s understanding of God "suffers from the limitations of an outmoded cosmology."

Loyola Marymount has also become one of the training centers for the archdiocese’s lay parish leaders, who serve in the capacity of pastors.

In June 2006, Florida state circuit court Judge George Greer, who ordered feeding tubes removed from Terry Schiavo, spoke at a conference on media law at the Loyola Law School. “Based on the intense scrutiny and media coverage generated by the Schiavo case,” said a Loyola press release, “Judge Greer will bring a unique perspective to the journalists in attendance.”

Greer’s address was not the first connection Loyola Marymount has had with the Schiavo case. In 2004, Loyola Marymount bioethics professor James Walter signed on to the amicus curiae brief arguing that Michael Schiavo should be allowed to deprive his wife -- in a persistent vegetative state for 15 years -- of food and hydration.

The Lawton-led university has also repeatedly hosted pro-abortion speakers at commencement ceremonies. The 2006 commencement featured Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa; in 2005, it was California Attorney General Bill Lockyer. In 2000, pro-abortion Connecticut Sen. Christopher Dodd addressed graduates of Loyola Law School.

As far as entertainment goes, in 2004 the university participated in the V-Day College Campaign, complete with a performance of the Vagina Monologues.

Among the policy changes under the Lawton administration, the university began in 2004 to grant insurance coverage for its employees’ “registered domestic partners.” The previous year, Lawton mused that such an offering “may not be appropriate” at a Catholic university, but that it would, nevertheless, “follow state law in the matter,” according to minutes of a university meeting. Three years earlier, the university announced it would offer “enhanced contraceptive coverage” to its employees -- again, it was claimed, in response to a new state law, but at the very time Catholic Charities was fighting that law in court.

More recently, the university invited as visiting professor Wole Soyinka, a critic of the Christian faith. “Through his words and actions, Mr. Soyinka has transformed the world and embodies our university’s mission,” Lawton said in a university press release.

Cardinal Mahony named Lawton and four others as recipients of the 2008 Cardinal’s Award on Sept. 12. According to the Tidings, the awards are given to “members of the Los Angeles Catholic community who have extensive and distinguished records of service.” The Cardinal’s Award Dinner is scheduled at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza on Feb. 9, 2008.

Time for Mahony to resign

Posted Thursday, September 27, 2007 7:28 AM By Margie
In reading Sister Emmanuel's little book, "Freed and Healed Through Fasting," I am reminded of some of the messages of Our Lady of Medjugorje concerning bishops. Jelena(Dec 15, 1983) "Fast on Thursday and Friday for the Bishop." One visionary has a mission of praying specifically for unbelievers. Let us make sacrifices, let us renounce the things of this world that distract us from praying. It is time, my dear brothers and sisters in Christ to seriously renounce all distractions. Souls depend upon it. Cardinal Mahony needs the prayers of his flock. Do not deny him your sacrifices, your prayers, your fasting. With these in the hand of the Blessed Mother, a shower of graces for full conversion will come from heaven. The times are urgent. If you love your priests, your bishops, your cardinals, then pray and fast as if their souls depend upon it. They do.

The players are correct, the award was not. Cardinal Mahony should have presented the "Judas Iscariot Award", that coveted statue of Judas made of lead, to the year's most uncatholic university that calls itself Catholic. Last year's recipient was University of San Diego, which was a strong runner up again for this year's award. It was a tough decision the members of the Academy of Uncatholic Universities (AUU), with so many worthy contenders. Speculation is already rampant about who will win next year's award.

The Cardinal and his award recipents are typical of most of our clergy today - they are out in the forrest while their house is burning to the ground.

Cardinal Mahony and Fr. Lawton have demonstrated a strong attraction to those who support the secular world view that life can be taken from those who are either to weak or to you to defend themselves. God have mercy on Cardinal Mahony and Fr. Lawton. JMJ

I WILL KEEP PRAYING FOR THE CARDINAL. AND ASK ALL OF THE READERS TO DO THE SAME! I HAD SUCH GREAT HOPE RECENTLY WHEN HE SPOKE UP AGAINST A PHYSICIAN ASSISTED SUICIDE BILL THAT WAS IN OUR LEGISLATURE, AND THE SPEAKER WAS SITTING IN THE PEW (HE ENDORCED THE MEASURE FOR IT) AND I THINK THE CARDINAL REALLY HELPED IT IN BEING DEFEATED!!!

Fred H. you sir are behind the times. get with it. Cardinal Mahoney IS the recipent of the "Judas Iscariot Award" It is his until he passes on, only then can it be awarded to another deserving leader of our Church, you will note a FEW have lined up to be the next owner. Keep in mind though, they do have to expliain their award on judgement day, would you want to be in their shoes. We cannot judge, but we can guess at the wrath of OUR LORD when another judas stands before him. GOD BLESS

I suggest we who think there is a problem, copy and sent on to the Pope. His email (last I knew) benedictxvi@vatican.va. Plus your prayers.

As a grad of the "old Loyola U.," I have met Fr. Lawton briefly on occasion. He appears to be friendly but somewhat shy in his public persona, and very guarded as to what escapes his lips - at least with the "old boys." When offering blessing before meals at the President's Day luncheons before religiously mixed groups, he has a not so charming habit of petitionong a generic God but never mentioning the name of Jesus, or of Christ or "Our Lord." Society of Who? Truly, he seems so mild-mannered you have to wonder dear editor: what happened to my comments, they disappeared from the box before i finished writing.

pedophile priests, cardinal's like Mahoney and priests like Lawton is what the catholic church needs to rid itself of.

It is very sad for our children and our children's children to be exposed to such heresy and arrogance." May God forgive them they know not what they do"

This Cardinal Mahony is the one who keeps being quoted for all the politically correct issues. "Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's; render unto GOD what is GOD's. The laws of the church are being ignored. The laws of the church and the laws of the land are being selected to accommodate personal preference. The late Pope John Paul II said it best "cafeteria catholics".

Isn't it strange - over in Burma, the Budhist monks are taking to the streets so the people can be free. And the people are joining them - and getting shot. Over here, our Priests, Bishops and Cardinals should be doing nothing less than taking to the streets over the slaughter of the innocents! The laity have been in the streets for decades - once again, WHERE ARE THE SHEPHERDS!

Posted Friday, September 28, 2007 6:42 PM By bruce
Well, you know the old saying: birds of a feather flock together. As Our Lady of La Salette said (in part): "Several will give up the faith, and numbers of priests and of monks who will separate from the true religion will be large; among these people, there will be even bishops." Pretty obvious today, isn't it?

Mahoney has once again broke free from his leash. This man is a wild dog. Why does Riger not give up his collor, get a boyfreind, and just do the "Wild Thing". From turning Pedophile Preist's loose on and unsuspecting parish, to dialouge with Sodomites, Roger never fails to shock his readers.

Has the Catholic Church spun out of control of the Bishops and Pope?

Posted Friday, September 28, 2007 11:42 PM By DIANE
APPARENTLY, MAHONY CONSIDERS HIMSELF POPE OF THE WEST. HE WEATHERED THE 5 YEARS RESISTING THE LAWSUITS FOR HIS PEDOPHILE PRIESTS AND HE IS NOW MOVING FORWARD WITH HIS PLANS TO SECULARIZE HIS ARCHDIOCESE OF LOS ANGELES. IT'S OBVIOUS WHY MAHONY AND LAWTON ENJOY "AMICABLE RELATIONS". LAWTON IS DOING EXACTLY WHAT MAHONY HAS BEEN TRYING TO DO FOR YEARS, BEGINNING WITH RAMPANT PEDOPHILIA IN THE SEMINARY. MAHONY CONTINUES WITH HIS ORIGINAL PLANS TO DESTROY CATHOLICISM AND REPLACE IT WITH THOSE OF HIS CHOOSING TO CREATE A PSEUDO-INTELLECTUAL RELIGIOUS SOCIETY. IT WOULD APPEAR THAT THE GOAL OF THESE TWO IS TO INCREMENTALLY RE-CREATE CATHOLICISM INTO THEIR IDEA OF "SYSTEM OF POWER", ERASING CELIBACY, USING FEMININE THEOLOGIANS (LESBIAN PERHAPS?) AS PASTORS, CONFINING THE TRIDENTINE MASS TO A HOSPITAL, A CONVENT, A CHAPEL, AND A COLLEGE IN L.A., NO PARISHES, PROFESSORS WHO ARE ANATHEMA TO CATHOLIC TEACHINGS, SUCH AS THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES (ARE THEY SERIOUS?), INSURING "DOMESTIC PARTNERS" (MEANING THERE ARE HOMOSEXUALS ON THE STAFF), INSURING EMPLOYEES WITH CONTRACEPTIVE COVERAGE, ANTI-CATHOLIC VISITING PROFESSOR, PRO-ABORTION SPEAKERS, EUTHANASIA OF THE SICK, DEPRIVING PATIENTS OF FOOD AND HYDRATION (MONSTROUS).....DOES ANYONE SEE SODOM AND GOMORRAH? I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT POPE BENEDICT IS AWARE OF ALL OF THIS. WE CAN, OF COURSE, PRAY BUT WE CATHOLICS MUST GO OVER MAHONY'S HEAD TO BRING HIM DOWN. AND WHEN DOES A CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY BECOME A SECULAR INSTITUTION AND STILL DRAW CATHOLIC STUDENTS, WHO HAVE NO IDEA THEY ARE WALKING INTO A CONTROLLED SYSTEMATIC INDOCTRINATION. IT'S NOW TIME FOR US TO STORM POPE BENEDICT AT THE VATICAN WITH WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE, USING THE FOLLOWING E-MAIL ADDRESS: benedictxvi@vatican.va

It hurts the Lord when you strike the shepherd. Why not pray for him? We all need grace. Our priests, bishops and cardinals need our prayers. As a soldier in the battle for souls, I do not aim my fire at my commander but seek to lighten his burden. Is it easy to shepherd the flock? We may be dismayed but all things work for good for those who love the Lord. Dear Father, bless our priests, bishops, cardinals and give them the grace to follow the narrow road. We lift them all up to you that you may tenderly lead their souls into your divine light. Amen.

It seems to me to be honest, a bishop ought to be in union with the pope or out of office.

Posted Saturday, September 29, 2007 12:50 PM By Will
Quit knocking these men! They probably never saw the Vagina Monologues and never heard of the Schiavo case. They probably only heard that Senator Dodd was personally opposed to abortion, but didn't know that he voted against outlawing partial-birth abortion. Oh... and they probably believe Batman and Robin are saints and Pope John XXIII is still pope.

I hope this information has been forwarded on to Our Holy Father so that he can see what sort of priests and bishops the NOvus Ordo has spawned.

Cardinal Mahoney deserves to be in jail with the pedophiles he has protected. At least Father Lawton supports open discussions of serious issues, which was a valuable, and now largely forgetten, characteristic of the Catholic church.

How can you trust the people who run this church - including the Pope - when they refuse to stop the scandalization of the faithful and the promotion of lies and sin and falsehood? We deserve better - a LOT better - for the sake of our own souls and especially for our children.

Posted Sunday, September 30, 2007 11:53 AM By SC
Cardinal Mahoney and his ilk have sold their souls to the Devil. Sadly, they are taking many "Catholics" with them.

Posted Sunday, September 30, 2007 7:03 PM By Maria C
James, We do not put our trust in men! But we place our trust in Jesus who picks his men, even Judas betrayed him and he picked him. Jesus is in charge, our church is made up of many sinners unfortunitely even those who are in charge could be in bad will. But you are forgetting that there are many holy priests who live, breath and follow the holy Will of Jesus! Lets not forget them. But ultimately the ones who are in bad will, will answer to God for their scandelous evil in which they brought upon His holy Catholic Church. Our church is the only church that has apostolic truths, which means you can trace this Catholic church all the way to the apostles. Our Pope is also a good Pope, he would never condone this sort of bad will behaviour. We need to somehow make him aware of this. With the faithful flock of Christ's church we can keep praying and remain faithful and Jesus will take care of the rest for our perserverence and truths in His Holy Catholic Church! Long live Jesus Christ, praise be His Most Holy Name, Jesus Christ, oh how we love thee!

Put a note in your collection basket why you won't give any more money to the catholic church until they remove him from his duties and tell your priest to forward it on. If you get enough of those notes and no donations, trust me they will make changes. Secular people thrive on the Almighty Dollar, that is what they live for. Hit them where it hurts the most and you will get some response. Your preist should be just as responsible for their actions and he will be if the funds dry up. Sad but true fact, money talks and the Roman Catholic church is more interested in money talking then God speaking.

"A good solution", you have the church all wrong! Jesus Christ is the founder of this church, so in truth, you are mistaken when you quoted that the Roman Catholic church is interested in money, oh how wrong you are! It is men who are more interested in money, Jesus's body is not! The Church is the body of Christ! So please do not speak ignorance babble. You can say that men might be interested in solely that so I agree with you on not giving any donations for now but give to where Jesus sends you to give. There are many wonderful orders of the church with wonderful holy Priests, who truly are doing the will of our Lord, that is where the money(tithe) should be given.

I can understand being frustrated with the Cardinal for the clergy scandal, but equating Fr. Lawton with the devil or Judas Iscariot seems just tragically closeminded. As a president of an institution of higher learning, he he has a duty to sponsor dialogue with different viewpoints from all over the world. Even if the perspective is one that we disagree with, it would be ignorant and even worse, foolish, to turn it away in the pride filled notion of "righteousness". Only in embracing others, will we truly adopt the message of Jesus Christ.
